The Gay "Lifestyle"
What is the Gay "Lifestyle"? Getting up, showering, eating a bagel, checking e-mail, going to work. Screwing around on the internet at work. Hanging out with friends at a bar, going to the movies. Shopping for dinner at the grocery store. Playing video games, shooting pool. Volunteering at the food bank or pet rescue. Road tripping to Vegas for the weekend. Bemoaning your hangover on Monday when you get to wake up and do it all over again for another week.

In other words, the same damn thing as the Hetero "Lifestyle". Please, please stop using this offensive term.

We don't have a "lifestyle", we have lives.

It's not about homosexuality. It's about a fetish.

73. Exactly. Heteros do it in "not the ideal" places too.
Doesn't mean they do it more frequently, or less frequently. It's illegal to do it in a public place, period.

12. Apprently that went over your head.
The people that use the term "Gay Lifestyle" are Republicans.

Republicans go to public bathrooms and try to solicit gay sex.

Therefore, Republicans think the "gay lifestyle" is going to public bathrooms to solicit gay sex.

Even still, we only lost by 624 votes out of ~3000.

A lot closer than in past years (over 1000-vote difference)

Gasp. What does this mean? We're not "marching in lockstep!"

My "gay lifestyle" involves getting up, showering (so far so good), feeding the cats, running out of time to eat breakfast, dropping off my kids at school, going to work, working, meeting my partner at the gym (to actually work out - not troll for casual sex in the locker room - imagine that!), scaring up dinner, feeding the cats, doing laundry, reading the internets before bed, going to sleep.

22. Part of it may come from the term "Lifestyle" in general
The Lifestyles Convention in Las Vegas is not about getting up, taking a shower, going to work, etc. "Lifestyles" is a euphemism for other-than-"normal" hetero sex, bet it swinging, gay, bsdm, whatever. Of course, Republicans are deeply involved in their closeted little "lifestyles" so they know a lot about this stuff, and use the term in an all-encompassing way.

29. That's exactly why gay people find it offensive. It equates being gay with being kinky.
I don't care if other people are kinky or not, as long as they are being kinky with consenting adults. However, I am not kinky. The fact that I am a woman who loves a woman does not make me kinky, and I resent the implication.

Some gay people are into kinky sex, just like some straight people. Nobody considers all straight people to be kinky just because some straight people like S&M.

78. I don't argue with you
But the alt weekly newspapers also tend to put the "lifestyles" banner over the very-personals in the back, so the straights (especially the closeted Republicans, which appear to be most of them) can't separate being non-hetero with anything but "kinky."

107. If Republicans get their information about gay people's lives from the personals
no wonder they are confused.

The personals in the back of alt-weeklies cater to a small subset of the population, and certainly don't reflect the points of view or behavior of most people, gay or straight.

This is not to put down the personals or anyone who uses them - I know that some people have found wonderful friends and mates this way - but the personal ads in the back of alt-weeklies aren't going to reflect most people's lives, lifestyles, or whatever.

37. you know, of course, it's a stereotype
single lifestyle

bachelor lifestyle

lifestyles of the rich and famous

children learn through stereotyping (dogs bite)

unfortunately, for many people, they continue to think in terms of stereotypes even as adults

here's a piece of fun trivia i just found:
The term "the lifestyle" can also mean what is more commonly called swinging. This term was first used in the early 1970s by ClubWideWorld, a swing club in Anaheim, California, for advertisements in the Los Angeles Free Press. "The Lifestyle" was a more inclusive and acceptable term for swinging. People in "the lifestyle" most commonly are a couple; often a married couple. They meet other like-minded couples or occasionally singles through various websites, private/ public clubs, and on tours to lifestyles friendly resorts, to engage in sexual acts/ activities. Not all lifestyle activities are sexual, as they may also meet to educate, support, or help others who are in "the lifestyle".

39. According Rev. McClosetCase, there's a "happy" gay lifestyle and an "unhappy" gay lifestyle
Rev. Donnie the ex-gay clown won't bother you if you're one of those "happy" gays...you know, like Jack on "Will and Grace" or that nice Ellen fella. However, if you're an unhappy gay (and you must be because teh Gay is a curse that kills children, wraps you in addiction, and, heaven forbid, leads to dancing), let Rev. Donnie take you to his conversion therapy complex (also known as Room 1881 at the Charleston Hilton - Charleston S.C.) where he can perform his famous "laying of the hands" to cure you of your disease. On the down low, of course.

If gay is a Lifestyle?
Tell me what do hets have? Another lifestyle. They have a het sex orientation so it must be the hetero lifestyle..right?

fundie christian hets,a lifestyle plus a CHOSEN religion.
A chosen toxic religion justified by a lifestyle that wants to dominate others lives and control society through the "christian lifestyle".Christianity of the fundie kind demands adherents follow a god based lifestyle lest they become backsliders and piss off their chosen god....

Christianity and a church that controls whom you see, how you relate to others, who you can have as friends, right down to what you do with your own time,is a lifestyle of religion and it IS always a choice.

Babies are not born singing hymns and praising jesus they are TAUGHT to do that.Usually by christian parents insisting on living a "christian lifestyle" and having thier kids live it too or suffer..All babies will become adults. And as they mature and the hormones enter their bodies, they might find they are not attracted to the opposite sex. They might not be hetero oriented. They find they are gay by their own bodies by sexual attractions.Like heteros do,but they are not and cannot be heteros. They lack the opposite sex attraction heteros have that certain kinds of a hostile controlling religion just happens to demand of all it's followers..

Being gay is a sexual orientation. As in you are either gay,bi or straight. What gender you are attracted to is what your orientation is, end of story. And there is no choice in sexual orientation.Does any one know how many hets turn gay who did not at least have a bi curious side to begin with???

The only choice for queer people than becomes being open about it or closeted until you die ...

For gays it's either cave in to this social pressure induced and self induced psychological torture,a life of stress, loneliness, isolation and denial or being out of the closet and at risk of being hurt or denied things like housing or a job by bigots.Gays, bisexuals, and trans-people are put in real life danger all because of the chosen christian lifestyle that some people choose to have..

Gay/Bi/Transgender or hetero sexual orientation is not a choice or a lifestyle for anyone.. The appearance of choice to stupid people who never have been scapegoated really comes from the social situation created by pushy christian life-stylers who choose to force their christian lifestyle onto the whole world .

They push that "lifestyle" out of their own narcissism. All this suffering so jesus will make an extra nice crown for them when they die.Narcissism and domination is the motivator of many a christian bigot...Despite what they may choose to say to the contrary. They wanna be gods favorites.

Hide the truth or not, for queer people, who exist on either side of the closet door, regardless of what 'lifestyle' or religion they choose to have, they are still gay...

A person has to have to have a conscience and empathy for others for real to care about the issues queer people face, to have that kind of humanity regarding a gay person may require a christian to make a new lifestyle choice,to care instead of dominate, intimidate and convert or destroy the gay person..

93. Some people have "lifestyles," some have "lives."
The two are pretty much mutually incompatible. "Lifestyle" means pretentious and ostentatious. I've been inflicted with a lot of "lifestyles" from people of all sexual orientations, sexes and races.

Curiously enough, the heteros with "lifestyles" are personally blamed for their idiocy - their pickup trucks or their trophy wives, their day spa treatments and their abuse of subordinates at work. But when gays do it, they seem to drag down their entire category.

Anybody want to offer any ideas as to why this happens? I have some, but I'd rather not get flamed right here and right now. Let me hear what someone else thinks first.

95. Well, as far as I can tell, my lesbian friends live much the same
"lifestyle" as I do. Wake up, try to wake kid up to go to school, have some breakfast, go back to waking kid up to go to school, get dressed, drag screaming kid out of bed, throw some food and clothes at her and frog-march her to the bus stop, drive to metro station, get caught in traffic jam, get stuck on metro train going no where fast, get to work, get some liquid caffeine, work, reverse commute process with similar results, deal with cranky kid who is tired from a full day of kindergarten, eat dinner, pay bills or help kid with homework, bath kid who doesn't want a bath, throw kid into bed hoping she will get a few more minutes of sleep tonight and not be so cranky tomorrow, talk to spouse who is busy playing computer games or looking at model railroad equipment on line, take shower, go to bed. Oh, hold on a minute, that reads like it's a "life" not a "lifestyle". Well, darn - there goes that theory up in smoke. Most people have lives and, as far as I can see, in this economy, not many of us make enough to have a "lifestyle". But, if I did, it would be Neo-Depression, with a soupcon of Traditional Recession mixed in.

Oh hell! I thought the "gay lifestyle" was all about going to brunch and stuff.

I was all set to sign up and now you have completely burst my bubble. My biggest dilemma up to now was WHO to share the toaster oven with! Now that I know what y'all REALLY do, I think I'll just keep my boring old "straight" lifestyle and live without that toaster oven...

Seems like my day begins by getting my kid out of bed, fed, and ready for school. THEN I get to go to my office and let taxpayers yell at me while I figure out how to deal with the current real estate market as an assessment official. THEN I go to the gym and the grocery store, make dinner, and do laundry and homework with my kid, while I'm doing laundry.

And then I go to bed.

I dunno, that Mimosa thing still sounds pretty good to me. IS there any lifestyle (excluding that of Paris Hilton) I can adopt that will allow for lazy brunches every day?

124. I don't know, but if you find out the Mimosa lifestyle secret, please share the secret!
Your lifestyle sounds just like ours - are you sure you aren't gay? ;)

127. Will I get a Mimosa if I say I am gay?
I have always maintained that I am a political lesbian with an unfortunate appreciation for male anatomy. Right now I'd probably switch teams for a plain old Bloody Mary if you want the truth--even without the toaster oven. (It has been a fun old day in my world, let me tell ya!) It wouldn't even have to be a good BM, either. Just some V8 and vodka with a lone ice cube floating in it would probably be enough. I'd even be ok without the celery stalk...

:hi:

128. Sure, we pass out Mimosas and high-quality Bloody Marys at recruitment events.
All you have to do is show up, sign on the dotted line, and we'll hand you a super-duper drink of your choice! Then you can join the line for toaster ovens and even plasma screen TVs over there.

If only. Oh well. I'm sorry that you had a bad day - hope today is better! :grouphug:

142. Well, if you'll give me two olives I could fall into line!
For a twist you can take me home to meet your mother!

We used to take Stoli and put it in the freezer with a twist of lemon peel dropped into the bottle. I would consider the idea of vermouth while I poured and they were PERFECT. That was back in the days when Stoli was still good vodka. Today, I'd have to say that Ketel One and maybe Grey Goose are my personal choices.

Man, y'all play dirty when you recruit!

;)

119. Yes it is offensive
I've had a few "churchy" Friends I worked with that feel it necessary to let me know that they disapprove of my "lifestyle". Gee thanks. But they were otherwise courteous and professional with me, so I just ignored it.

But the thing that irks me to no end is that they, among other freeper types, viewed my relationship with a woman as purely about having sex all the time. And criminy, that was far from the truth.

We actually SLEPT most of the time (imagine that!). We both had jobs, bills to pay, other friends and activities, did grocery shopping and planned dinners, watched a lot of movies, visited parents and other family. We got sick sometimes, fortunately not at the same time, cared for each other. And yeah, we also kissed good morning and good night every day. After all, we loved and cared about each other.

Lifestyle my butt. I never felt normal my entire life until i did come out and admit my true sexuality.

Thanks for the opportunity to vent.

131. I'm so sorry they did that. They had no right to.
They're being like the Pharisee in the Seven Woes, ignoring their own sins and shortcomings while finding nothing things that God doesn't even think about in other people. Do they go around telling teens to stop dancing, too? Do they write letters to the editor about how evil earrings and pants are for women? Seriously, they need a wake-up call.

130. Why would any person who considers him/herself enlightened use that term?
That's Republican-speak. But even they never say "straight lifestyle" b/c they know it's all a bunch of stupid talk.

133. Oh, if that's the case then I think I might be gay... :P
I've never used the term gay lifestyle, but I never thought into the term too much...
