Check in if Dennis is your #1 or at least #2 candidate
The Dennis Kucinich group has a similar topic, but this is a much bigger forum. Dennis is my #1!

61. I think he definitely can lead
He just needs party backing. If the electorate gets enlightened enough to elect him, there would be no problem.

I am so glad he got impeachment discussion started. One hour on those serious charges would be nonsense, but he succeeded in getting it to the panel. Some here wanted it investigated there first anyway.

79. Well, thats the thing, I need him to do more than lead the party,I need him to lead the nation...

and I don't see him offering much to the moderates on the other side.

I know many people have a "f-them" attitude after having dealt with Bush/Cheney/Rove/etc for 7 years, but my goal is to nominate someone who I think can lead the vast majority of Americans. Some people call me a centrist, sometimes I do to.

In truth, I don't know if any of the candidates can do what I want of them, but I'm pretty sure DK can't.

Edited on Wed Nov-07-07 10:28 PM by mvd
I believe he can sway some moderates to our side, because his views just plain make sense. Many people want universal health care, and many people want withdrawal from Iraq to start now. Just because he has some differences with the "masses" doesn't mean that he could not convince them. What we should do is support him, or someone like him might never get a chance. And Kucinich is my guy, period.

189. This whole 'moderate' thing.
Edited on Thu Nov-08-07 02:12 PM by GMFORD
What do you mean by that? Would you be happier if Dennis accepted some PAC and Corporate $$ for his campaign but not too much? What if he espoused kinda fair trade, like maybe WalMart would get an exception or something? What if instead of ending the war in Iraq he suggested we limit it to defending Baghdad and the Green Zone and maybe the humongous embassy we built there? As for Iran, would it suit you better if he said we PROBABLY shouldn't go to war with Iran? As for universal health care, maybe just for some people and everyone else would pay?

My point is, what do you mean by moderate? I haven't seen a middle ground since 2000 -- there are the wingnuts (liars, criminals, warmongerers) and then us sensible liberal/progressive types.

Editted to add: Maybe Dennis should flipflop once in awhile or tell a few lies to make you moderates like him better.

218. Well, I've been taking a straw poll around here
amongst my conservative/Libertarian friends. They are very impressed with the fact that Dennis is supporting the Constitution and that he wants to take our nation back to the rule of law. To them, that's the bottom line. NONE of them are voting Republican in the general election. If Kucinich is on the ballot, they will be seriously considering him.

You call me disingenuous. If this is the kind of persuasion we can expect from DK supporters, you have only affirmed my assertion.

If you look at past elections there are people in the middle. Moderate Democrats and Republicans and they sometimes swing. Sometimes they split down the middle, but sometimes they swing to give one party the lead.

I hope DK can be more inspiring than you.

one would have to assume you have actually looked at kucinich's positions. which of them do not suit the "moderate" or "middle"? and what do these terms mean at all if not opposition to real progressive ideas? i've seen the "moderates" and "the middle" at work in american politics my whole life and the results are clear. these forces block progress. america is circling the drain due to compromise with the right.

That's just simple incompetence. Kucinich can find his own ass with one hand, and won't panic when things don't go his way.

The "can't lead" meme is entirely an invention of teeveecentrics who can't get over Kucinich's short stature and left-wing ideals.

164. I'm sure this won't be convincing, but perhaps you'll understand my position

I view DK as a rock solid liberal Democrat who has positioned himself as a statesmen of the left. But even within our own party he is left of center. Which is fine, in fact, great, as a Senator. We need him. But he sometimes fails to understand the importance of some issues among centrist Democrats and moderate Republicans. An example of this was he declaration that he would submit a bill to ban handguns after the VATech massacre. I can understand his frustration with gun violence and his desire to ban handguns is popular among effete anti-gun folks within our own party. Banning handguns, however, is serious smack in the face of everyone who carries or owns a handgun for personal protection. To top it off, he hasn't even proposed the bill. Either he is backing away without acknowledging the gaffe, didn't really mean what he said, or it hasn't reached the top of his chore list. I don't know.

Either way, I don't think DK understands middle America enough to lead them as well as he leads the left of center.

186. Definitely not the same thing as "can't lead," but I get it.
I do disagree, though. As president, he would only be able to sign or veto legislation coming from a Congress not all that different from the current one. His secret longing to make veganism mandatory wouldn't be a factor. :D

I think that most of America would be middlin'-pleased with an other-than-corporatist agenda in the White House. The wingnuts would raise a stink, of course, but they're gonna do that no matter which Dem takes office.

220. I'm surprised you think DK doesn't understand middle America
He's from Cleveland, grew up in a working class family, was homeless for a part of his youth, and lives now in a modest house in that city. We're talking about a fellow who worked as an aide in a hospital and as a cameraman. We're talking about a fellow who has had ups and downs in his life, and has learned from them. In my opinion, he understands Middle America far better than the millionaires running for office.

196. This Dennis can't lead thing.
I could understand your position if he were running against people who had been president before. But none of them have so it can't be lack of experience causing you to say that.
So maybe you mean lead as in say one thing in the campaign and do another when elected. Well, you are right there -- he's the only candidate that does not kiss ass, does not back down and does what he says he will do. If those are qualities that would make him a bad leader then you are right.

there was a fellow who ran for President. It was said that he couldn't lead the nation. His views were too extreme. His only national experience was in the House of Representatives, and he'd never been a governor. He looked funny. His name was Abraham Lincoln.

236. A lot of people would have died
even if Lincoln hadn't been President. Do you honestly think that a President Douglas, Bell, or Breackenridge would have stopped the Civil War? There was already a civil war in Kansas which Buchanan did nothing to stop. I would also contend that Lincoln didn't start the war-the Southerners in South Carolina did that. Lincoln did everything in his power to avoid conflict.

Check out what Lincoln did with his cabinet appointments, and what his goals were.

K' is the only REAL progressive Dem on the ballot, people.
As people we have been so rightward tilted for so long,I don't think a lot of people even remember what a progressive is anymore.
In past years before raygun and his right wing shit heads those same names recycled again, that led to this bush coup..Left leaning people back than would have seen Hillary leaning on the right the same with Obama. Even Sen.Gore, his wife was Tipper gore who got all bent out of shape over evil song lyrics in the 80's,remember the PMRC? Parents music resource council? Tipper Gore's bullshit that Dee Snyder and Frank Zappa tore apart ? That crap was some fundie "moral majority" right wing bullshit if I ever saw it.And all I can do is shake my head and wonder why do people have such short memory spans? Did Dem's forget what it means to be on the left all of a sudden?
http://www.dashes.com/anil/2006/08/frank-zappa-on.html
http://www.guidestar.org/DisplayArticle.do?articleId=937#Gore
And what is the faith and values coalition? None other than the new name of Falwell's"moral majority".

Everyone loves Al Gore's environmental stance,He looks like a progressive, but I have my doubts..in 2000 he supported some things that just make me sick..like the Faith and Values bullshit,Bush wanted and has now.. and his wife is an obnoxious fundie but she just doesn't parade it around...Nice closet fundies who are freaked by global warming,do not make a person progressive really they just appear that way to the people with short memories and even shorter attention spans(I cut some slack for people too young in the 80's to remember the PMRC.Might I suggest look it up?)...Why do CD's DVD's and even video games now, have a parental advisory label? Thank Tipper. as in GORE..Al Gore's religiously toxic wife.

And Edwards is an acceptable 2nd and who I'll probably cast my ballot with in the primes as I did in 2004 unless Dennis looks like he could pull it off. With enough of our votes he could. I'm a little worried that the Kucinich/Edwards voters will split support handing an easy win to Clinton though.

Edwards has to my first pick, solely for the reason that he appears to be the more "electable" candidate. However, I am inclined to consider Dennis for the #1 slot should I come across some convincing polls...

139. In a perfect world, it would be Gore #1, DK #2. Absent Gore, DK #1.
But we don't have a perfect world. Given the ugly reality of the MSM and Repuke machine coronating Hillary long before the first primary, I'm going to have to see where she, Obama, Edwards, Dodd, et. al. stand just prior to the California primary. Of course, if DK is way up there with any chance in Hell of taking the lead, I'll vote for DK. If, however, he's in the single digits, I'll be voting for anyone else who appears to have a chance of beating Hillary.

A Gore candidacy would, of course, make it easy. Gore would undoubtedly be ahead of the pack by the time California's turn comes around.

Gore, Kucinich, then (oddly enough) Richardson.

Okay with Gravel.

Mild positive feelings towards Dodd.

Negative towards Biden, Obama, and Edwards but
would (still) support them in the general Election.

Won't vote for Clinton, ever.

We are constantly being told he is unelectable because he's TOO HONEST. He's also brave and stands for the very changes we all want. standing bravely and calmly before his congressfellows, standing TALL for US, Kucinich is now tied for my vote with Edwards. I will vote for either man. Secondly, I will vote wholeheartedly for the Democratic candidate who is running against Billary. At this point in time I would have a difficult struggle if I was living in Iowa and having to choose between John and Dennis.

Dennis is certainly my favorite ever since I read Dr. Greer's "Hidden Truth - Forbidden Knowledge" book and year and a half ago! This book confirms the knowledge recently surfacing about Dennis' UFO siting. The sad thing is that people do not realize how important his sighting was to the bigger picture. Dennis understands the ties into the energy technology we have access to (in black-budget military projects), and to ambassadorship to our galactic friendlies! This book changed my life. I am SO glad Dennis was a part of it! :)

Namaste~

212. Number 1!
Here is a definition of a leader that I got way back in grad school. It resonates with me as much today as it did then. Unfortunately, I don't remember the source, but it goes like this:

A leader is someone who, grounded in hope, and together with followers, acts with courage to make an inauthentic situation authentic.

According to this definition, someone who rules by coercion is a despot, not a true leader. Nor does the title of leader bestow true leadership.

By this definition, Dennis Kucinich is the embodiment of a leader. In contrast, the lack of courage and apparent hopelessness the Democratic Party "leadership" is, in fact, serving to alienate would-be followers.

213. #1 for me from the beginning
Actions speak louder than words. Kucinich has the guts to endure ridicule and dismisal in order to stand by his principles and his solemn oath to defend the Constitution. Kucinich understands that if you're willing to compromise your principles to curry favor, then you had no principles worth speaking of to begin with. Integrity is doing the right thing even when it's not popular. Leadership is about saying what people need to hear, not what they want to hear. And that's why he gets my vote even if it's a write-in.

I think he is the only candidate out there with ideas that will bring us back to sanity as a nation. I also think he's the only candidate who has shown the courage to take action on those things he espouses, like getting out of Iraq and in having universal health care. The man walks his talk.

248. IMO, the fastest way to repeat our losses of 1994...
...would be to nominate a candidate for President who is on record as wanting to ban private possession of handguns. The war on drugs has been quite enough of a fiasco; we don't need to add a war on guns.

He definitely shot to the top of my list for actually bringing the Cheney impeachment to the table. I still think a Gore / Kucinich ticket would be the absolute A#1 be all, end all 911iani killer.
