AT&T Whistleblower: Telecom Immunity Is A Cover-Up
By Spencer Ackerman - November 7, 2007, 6:04PM

Earlier today we flagged that Mark Klein, who uncovered a secret surveillance room run by the NSA while employed as a San Francisco-based technician for AT&T, is in Washington to lobby against granting retroactive legal immunity to telecommunications companies. In an interview this afternoon, Klein explained why he traveled all the way from San Francisco to lobby Senators about the issue: if the immunity provision passes, Americans may never know how extensive the surveillance program was -- or how deeply their privacy may have been invaded.

"The president has not presented this truthfully," said Klein, a 62-year old retiree. "He said it was about a few people making calls to the Mideast. But I know this physical equipment. It copies everything. There's no selection of anything, at all -- the splitter copies entire data streams from the internet, phone conversations, e-mail, web-browsing. Everything."

What Klein unearthed -- you can read it here http://www-tc.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/homefront/etc/kleindoc.pdf -- points to a nearly unbounded surveillance program. Its very location in San Francisco suggests that the program was "massively domestic" in its focus, he said. "If they really meant what they say about only wanting international stuff, you wouldn't want it in San Francisco or Atlanta. You'd want to be closer to the border where the lines come in from the ocean so you pick up international calls. You only do it in San Francisco if you want domestic stuff. The location of this stuff contradicts their story."

1. I heard him interviewed on NPR this evening...
sounded like they pretty much grabbed EVERYTHING domestic and overseas communication.
He said they were looking at content too, not just patterns of geographical location of communication.
damn.

3. I sure hope America takes notice of this, though I am pessimistic.
Thank God we still have people who are brave and lovers of the constitution. Hurray for all whistle blowers and a special "I love you" to Dennis Kucinich.

do their utmost to hide anything that exposes bushit in the dungeon where they think it belongs. When we're able to shine light on the cockroaches then the masses will join the revolution.

5. I only have one question for these people:
If the telecom companies did no wrong, then why grant them immunity?

9. Let's hope Congress doesn't grant immunity to the telecommunications companies.
He felt like he was connecting Big Brother. What a weight.

It feel like it's all falling apart for them, to me. Things are looking up!

Hmmm...In my state, vote totals are modemed from each precinct to central tabulators for the final tally....

13. This is huge news.
I saw him interviewed on Olbermann, and even after I thought I was done being shocked by the heinousness of this mal-administration, I WAS shocked tonight. In any other administration, the news that the President authorized spying on it's citizens, that's what it is, would be seen as a transgression beyond imagination. Here, in Bush world, it's just Wednesday.

All telephone calls, all email, all web browsing, HAS BEEN MONITORED. With no legal basis whatsoever. With nothing related to the War on Terror whatsoever. How can even Republicans condone that. It may also go some way to explaining the continual caving of the dems. The administration can have advance warning of what they are going to do, not to mention potential for blackmail. This is Watergate times a thousand. But the Republic merely sighs, then goes back into it's stupor.
