Girl gets detentions for hugs
Source: Daily Herald

MASCOUTAH, Ill. -- Two hugs equals two days of detention for 13-year-old Megan Coulter.

The eighth-grader was punished for violating a school policy banning public displays of affection when she hugged two friends Friday.

"I feel it is crazy," said Megan, who was to serve her second detention Tuesday after classes at Mascoutah Middle School.

"I was just giving them a hug goodbye for the weekend," she said.

6. Her parents are going to the next School Board meeting.
I hope they're accompanied by dozens of other parents.

All holding hands.

2. I'll never forget my detention in parochial school circa 1970 for laughing in the lunch line.
Schools' needs to have total power and dominion over their students is nothing new. Gave us all something to resent & rebel against. :)

need to be fired.

They are wierd. Freeper-like wierd. They shouldn't be around children or the rest of society either if hugs are offensive to them.

What century are they trying to get us to change to anyway, the 1700's?

10. Agreed
People like this CLEARLY should not be around children or adolescents. These are twisted individuals, who very likely suffer from some emotional (and probably intellectual) dysfunction. Last thing kids need is to have people like that around in positions of authority.

26. It was a relatively fun time in the 1700s!
After all, that's when our Revolution took place, and it was the Age of Reason and Enlightenment.

Now, in the puritanical 1600s, it was a different story...

Oh noes! The teacher saw me! I'm gonna get detention!
I'm screwn!

Man, I am so glad to not be a kid in today's school system.

Oh the other hand, I've got two younguns who will one day be in school.
How depressing.

9. WTF???!!!
Friends of my grandkids refer to each other as "moron", "retard", "idiot", "loser" and any other derogatory word they can think of and they don't get a reprimand, let alone detention.

This girl gives her friend a hug and gets detention.

This is just plain nuts!

11. They called my parents in because someone farted on the school bus.

Kids started hollering that I, "did it". What "it" was, the school bus driver had no idea. But that was not going to stop the driver from punishing me anyway. I refused the punishment when the bus driver could not tell me for what I was being punished. He took me to the high school principal from whom I again refused the punishment without being told for what I was being punished.

They then called in my parents -- note: my parents were two of many whose rule was, "if you get in trouble at school, it must be your fault … unless it involves the HS principal"; he was that much of a shit -- who agreed that punishment does not make much sense if the recipient does not even know for what purpose s/he is being punished.

I let the principal and driver stew in their own juices for a bit before finally explaining what happened. At which point the principal apologized and asked us to leave so he and the driver could talk in private.

Ha!

I should point out that I NEVER got into trouble with anyone before this driver took over the route. But was always getting into trouble with this one driver, hence my glee in his discomfort. After this incident my parents visited a bunch of the other kids who individually acknowledged that, for reasons unknown, this man "had it in" for me.

13. Fridays are often zoo-like days in secondary ed.
Still, I think the teacher or staff person went way, way, way too far. Hugging friends is PDA? Hugging is PDA? That rule is for the velcro couples (the ones where, if they separate to go to class, you can practically hear their hook and loop closures ripping apart), not for friends.

Man, and I think of all the real PDA I saw when I taught high school that I didn't report, let alone give a one-day suspension for . . . :eyes:

29. Agree
The zero tolerance policy is a simple way of removing the responsibility of have to make a judgment decision. This isolates the responsible official from charges of racism, misogyny, homophobia, sexism, classism, discrimination, stupidity or incompetence. JMO.

17. here's the rule:
"Displays of affection should not occur on the school campus at any time. It is in poor taste, reflects poor judgment, and brings discredit to the school and to the persons involved."

Poor taste and poor judgment? Really? Really?

And the fucking District Superintendent agrees with the judgment. Unbelievable.

32. My 12 yr old and her friend are sitting on the couch now...
with their legs crossed over each other. Earlier I took photos of three of them, 2 sitting and 1 laying over them. All very fun, very cute. If I didn't live in Kathmandu I'd expect Family Services to come haul me away any minute.

At their school the teachers are still allowed to touch the kids and it's remarkable how much difference it can make during troubled times. The world has gone seriously crazy.

31. "Has the world gone crazy?" . . .
why, yes it has, mogster . . . yes it has! . . .

consider, if you will, the prohibition in the student handbook . . .

"Displays of affection should not occur on the school campus at any time. It is in poor taste, reflects poor judgment, and brings discredit to the school and to the persons involved."

when we've sunk to the level of teaching our children that affection for others, and the innocent display thereof, is "wrong" -- that "it is in poor taste, reflects poor judgment, and brings discredit to the school and to the persons involved" -- then the world has indeed gone thoroughly, totally, completely and absolutely bat-shit crazy . . .

hell, just look at Washington DC . . .
