E. coli conservatism: "my job is too easy" edition
Submitted by Rick Perlstein on November 7, 2007 - 6:04pm.

You are not going to frickin' believe this one. From the Wall Street Journal:

HONG KONG—Retailers around the world scrambled to pull a popular toy called Bindeez off the shelves Wednesday after a chemical in some shipments of the Chinese-made product was found to mimic the effects of the so-called date rape drug.

At least three children have been hospitalized in Australia in recent weeks after swallowing beads from the toy.

In the U.S., a similar toy that is sold under the name Aqua Dots had been available at Toys "R" Us stores since May, according to a spokeswoman. When the company learned of problems with the Bindeez brand, it pulled Aqua Dots from its North American shelves. Aqua Dots is also sold at retailers including Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and Target Corp., and as of Wednesday morning it was still available in Wal-Mart, Target and eToys online stores, though it isn't clear whether that version poses any danger.

Wednesday afternoon, Spin Master Ltd., the North American distributor of Aqua Dots, issued a statement saying it is requesting that retailers remove the toy and stop selling it. The company added that "out of an abundance of caution" it has stopped shipping the item and is working with the Consumer Product Safety Commission and Health Canada.

The manufacturer, Moose Enterprises, of Melbourne, Australia, Wednesday said the problem had been traced to a Chinese factory it had contracted that substituted a toxic chemical with a safe type of glue during manufacturing.

Moose declined to name the manufacturer...

They "declined to name the manufacturer." Your toy industry: they've got naught in mind but the welfare of the children.

1. It's not the Chinese' fault! It's Mattel's! Or someone within the US!

It's never anyone else's fault! It's always the US to blame or the one who has to find a reason to apologize!
:sarcasm:

(Okay, diplomacy works at times, but there are others when eatin' "humble pie" isn't a bad thing...)

2. Good time to start up a toy manufacturing business here in the US
No one is going to want to buy Chinese made goods for their children. Time to bring manufacturing back here, where parents will pay a few bucks more for something safe.

Cheap goods don't have market value if they're toxic.

3. We have with us tonight, Mr. Irwin Mainway, President of Mainway Toys
SNL classic, Dan Aykroyd interviewed by Candace Bergen.

Consumer Reporter: So, you don't feel that this product is dangerous?

Irwin Mainway: No! Look, we put a label on every bag that says, "Kid! Be careful - broken glass!" I mean, we sell a lot of products in the "Bag O'" line.. like Bag O' Glass, Bag O' Nails, Bag O' Bugs, Bag O' Vipers, Bag O' Sulfuric Acid. They're decent toys, you know what I mean?

4. Wasn't that Maimway?
The name gives it away! SNL in the mid '70's was too cool!
