Rep. Schakowski: impeachment of Cheney would be overwhelmingly defeated
This morning on Democracy Now, Rep. Jan Schakowski essentially said that the only people who would vote for impeaching Cheney are the co-sponsors of Kucinich's resolution.

Her second comment shows that those in Congress know full well the risk of leaving Cheney in place. So I guess a substantial number of Democrats (not Schakowski) think bombing Iran and potentially starting a world war is not necessarily a bad idea.

REP. JAN SCHAKOWSKY: Well, I signed on, after giving it about ten seconds thought, to Dennis's resolution to impeach Dick Cheney. But here is the question for progressives who believe that Dick Cheney should be impeached: Do we want to have that vote? And, actually, I wanted to have that vote. You know, I voted in favor of having that vote. Do we want to have a vote, though, that loses overwhelmingly? That’s the fear. And that was what the Republicans were essentially saying: “Fine. Go ahead. Have your vote and see how many actually would have voted for the impeachment resolution.” I think it actually would have been pretty much of a handful of us who have signed on as co-sponsors, and I’m just not sure that it would have advanced our cause. They knew that.

AMY GOODMAN: And what about the impeachment of President Bush?

REP. JAN SCHAKOWSKY: Well, we certainly don’t want to impeach President Bush without impeaching Cheney. I think that many of the most drastic and radical of the actions taken by this administration -- I think Dick Cheney would have no hesitation, for example, to go in and bomb Iran. So, having Cheney as the President in the interim -- now, if we did both and Nancy Pelosi were the President of the United States and that were actually feasible in the next year, I would be all for that.

2. Hearings that bring the crimes to the forefront.

And would change the current calculation.

It makes no sense. She knows that dickie wants to bomb Iran! And because of that knowledge she won't promote Impeachment.

If she knows that dickie wants to bomb Iran, she should be actively pushing for HIS Impeachment. That is one of the reasons in DK's Resolution.

8. oh, I know -- but I'm saying the whole "vote thing" (paraphrasing Pappy?)

3. yeah, I would happy if Dems were at least investigating stuff that cut close to the heart of Bushies
like Cheney energy task force, intel manipulation, and a couple of issues related to 9/11, like why we didn't go after Saudi for funding the attack.

5. We need hearings by the full light of day, and then we need an
"up or down vote" on impeachment. For the record. So we know who to remove from office in 2008.

Bring it on. Let the cowards and traitors be identified.

6. Don't they have to have hearings anyway and then vote for impeachment
so if it goes done and doesn't happen, we can get all the stuff he has done on record. The MSM has got to be pressed to report this also.

9. Let's be clear about this
"impeachment" is the equivalent in criminal court to 'indictment'. it simply means there is enough evidence of wrongdoing to have a trial....which in this case would be in the Senate where evidence would be presented.

It appears obvious that there is enough evidence to 'impeach'....let's then have a trial in the senate and see if he can be removed.

Ok?

polls on this issue are about 55% approval on impeachment. By contrast, at the height of the proceedings against Clinton, 65% wanted it stopped.

I do realize that our congresscritters have stopped representing their constituents, but at least they could pretend to do so for our amusement for a while

12. I believe that went on the record Tuesday
...when they voted to shove DK's resolution into the dark basement of committee. The most shameful day yet for the Dems.

Even those in the House who support impeachment know there aren't enough votes. The climate up there just isn't good enough, unfortunately.
