Play this word game, donate rice to the hungry
Interesting article about this site in today's paper - every time you give the correct definition of a word you donate 10 grains of rice to the United Nations World Food Program.

It's also kind of fun.

3. now that IS neat!
I can kill two birds with one stone: feed hungry people while I keep sharpening my mind. I find crossword puzzles and word games are really good for fending off creeping brain fog that advances with each passing year after about 50.

I got up to vocab level 49 and donated 710 grains. I'm going to bookmark it. Nice to do something good while entertaining myself, too.

9. you did really well...
Here's a snippet from the article I read today in the KC Star:

Game warning: There are 50 vocabulary levels, and advancing to the upper reaches is no snap. Try irksome, exasperating, maddening. In fact, hardly anyone gets beyond level 48.

Congratulations!

15. Hoo boy. I didn't know that!
I did take a lot of educated guesses on some and got them right. That four years of Latin in high school does come in useful once in a while.

12. Only 10 grains of rice per word?!?
:wtf:

I can just buy a couple of pounds and donate it to a local food pantry!

10 grains per word? I'd be there all day trying to donate one serving!!

Probably a fun game though! :P

14. Damn, they got some ten $ GRE-esque words on that piece.
Edited on Thu Nov-08-07 09:08 PM by MLFerrell
My three minute speed run resulted in:

"You have now donated
400 grains of rice."

Not bad. I can spare fifteen minutes a day to earn ~2000 grains of rice for those who need it, and get an expanded English vocabulary out of the deal as well. I got up to Vocab level 43, but I finished at 41.

K&R, because this is one of the most uniquely productive (and amusing) time-wasters that I've ever seen.

:)

26. 4 cups of rice!
Thank you for looking that up.

I'm up to 4,030 grains of rice, I'm wondering what "canorous" means, and I'm tired of playing.

On the bright side, I've accumulated 4 cups of rice. I'll play it again from time to time.

Thanks again. :hi: I would have guessed 500 grains in a cup. Boy, was I off.

29. I continued. 6,100 grains = 6 cups.
You're right. Just the few of us posting here have provided quite a bit of rice.

I've bookmarked it, and I'll do it from time to time. I left the page open tonight, and went back to it occasionally.

You're not a slacker. If nothing else, you found out how much rice we were donating. :)

Like me. Heh. That is fun! Bookmarked, but it did take a LONG time to get to 2,000. I am glad that they let you keep going when you get the answer wrong.

Also nice to see how this is tracking: http://freerice.com/totals.html

They are off to a great start. :)

30. Woo Hoo!
I hit vocab level 50, and I've almost donated enough for two bowls of rice! (I don't have that many accomplishments, so I have to brag where I can.) :D

CORRECT!avulse means:
renounce
scout
clot
pluck
VOCAB LEVEL 50
You have now donated
1930 grains of rice.

This game is addictive, and I can justify my time at it by donating rice to the needy. Awesome.
