Ben Nelson: I Support Judge Mukasey

NELSON: 'I SUPPORT JUDGE MUKASEY'

November 5, 2007 – Nebraska's Senator Ben Nelson today met with Attorney General nominee, Judge Michael Mukasey. Following the meeting, Nelson announced that he would support the nomination and issued this statement:

"Judge Mukasey and I agree that a primary objective for the next Attorney General of the United States is to restore trust and credibility in the U.S. Department of Justice. I plan to support his nomination.

"The Department of Justice has suffered a debilitating loss of credibility in recent months. Judge Mukasey has a daunting task ahead of him, to rebuild the American people’s trust in the Department of Justice and to refocus the department on upholding the rule of law. Without achieving those goals, the Department of Justice will continue to be ineffective.

"The Department of Justice is enduring a crisis of leadership. Judge Mukasey can provide the steady hand needed to move the Department forward."
