...earlier today, I posted about the Merck settlement. My brother-in-law will doubtless take it because he found the whole process draining and difficult.
Here's my original post:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=389x2246636I wrote that I felt the settlement indeed held Merck accountable for killing my sister. However, the New York Times story left out an important detail that the AP didn't miss - and I'm just white-hot with anger and rage:
Merck said it will take a pretax charge for the full $4.85 billion in the current quarter. It would not say whether insurance will cover any of that, but said much of the charge will be tax deductible.
Analyst Steve Brozak of WBB Securities called Merck's handling of the litigation "a Harvard casebook study of how to deal with a problematic product."
Investors seemed to agree, as Merck shares ended up $1.13, or 2.1 percent, to $55.90 — trading near their 52-week high of $58.36.http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/n/a/2007/11/09/financial/f035747S80.DTLNo....justice...ever for us proles, is there? What's to stop any drug company from killing you, me, a loved one? They'll just write it off on their taxes and make even more money for their stockholders.
I repeat my earlier message to Merck, except now I'm screaming it ---- GO FUCK YOURSELVES.
