3. Well...
in order to "send in naval aviation" you have to know that a submarine is in the local area to begin with...

10. I took a similar photo of the Enterprise.
Being on a boomer and having a good camera my collateral duty was photog. Our shot was of the side.

12. Friend of mine was on von Steuben...
and they were called to play some cat and mouse with some skimmers in the Med. Now, this isn't the sort of thing they normally did, but all the navy wanted from them was a cheery 'aye, aye' and off they went. It was a nice change of pace, especially since after a couple days the skimmers STILL hadn't detected them. Well, they get brazen and my buddy - who's a glowing tea kettle mechanic - gets his turn on the scope - rare treat - and he's looking at a destroyer and the sailors hanging over the side smoking cigarettes when one jumps up and points at the periscope. All that million dollar equipment and a guy sucking on a butt finds them!

ps. Real subs are named for fish, and that includes the glow boats named for fish.

You're not going to leave out the S-boats, and city and state boats are you?

22. Yes, I'm a traditionalist...
I think subs should be named for fish. Wouldn't you rather be on the Sailfish than the City of Corpus Christi? Or the Entemedor rather than the Toledo?

Carriers should be named after Revolutionary War battles. Enough of this naming them after people!!!!

23. We do have a history of naming ships after states though.
And the newest attack subs are named after states.

But I got your point.

17. I don't know, but Iran bought a lot of deisel boats from US...
During the reign of the Shah when we were scrapping diesel boats. When I went through sub school there was an Iranian barracks.

I happened to be there when the Shah fell. It was a tense couple of days as the Marines babysat them.

20. This is still why we need a submarine fleet
For stuff like Desert Storm and the Iraqi Invasion, they are not anywhere near as useful as a carrier battle group.

But our subs should be spendings LOTS of time off the coast of China, finding their D/E boats when they run up their snorkels and run their diesels and keeping tabs on them. This way, if the Chinese feel so inclined to have one of their boats interecept a surface group, we'll have a heads-up.

The usual way to tell a sub that they've been found is to have a helicopter drop it's dipping sonar down on top of it and ping the hell out of 'em.

21. I just want to scream when I hear about submarines "fighting terrorisim." NO, that's not what ...
they're for.

They're for fighting China and Russia. Keeping them away from here, etc. That's reason enough for more subs. The sea is big.
