Multi-tasking in your job
How many things do you have to multi-task/keep track of (on average) and what happens if you screw up?

1. I work at a magazine kiosk.
My job is to ring people up when they are ready and chase off loitering readers. That's it.

I have a TON of free time. Thankfully there's free wi-fi here and an endless supply of reading material.

4. My max is about 7.
The worst that's ever happened is accidentally hanging up on Blue Cross. That one really brought me to tears (haha).

I did mess up a time card once and the plant manager in another state had to hand write a check to the employee to make sure they got their full pay on time. No one yelled, no one died. It was fixable.

I don't really multitask at all-- I just manage one crisis after another until they all blend together.

11. I figure three, four at the most.
That's my current ratio.

I found I could juggle up to eleven when I was in management, but juggling doesn't get much, it always seemed to be the top three that got taken care of.

If I screwed up:

In management, I could be subjected to harsh scoldings and BS gossip from people who got paid way more than me yet actually accomplished much less. But, working as a middle manager, there was not much fate worse than trying to do a good job in that role.

Now back to hourly, I'm at the whim of my current manager who at least has some appreciation that I'll do a good job whatever the circumstance. But, if I screw up, I'll get disciplined formally and then "stepped up" to termination.

single Mom with a kid that was all over the map..literally!

And, at the time, two sickly parents. Ugh.

I handled 10 technical support call cues and the dreaded "800" # ( :banghead: )

and also simultaneously handled "mgmt" customer service calls no one else

wanted (complaints) and was training 10 guys at the same time... newbies.

They (upper mgmt.) told me they were 'trained' but some didn't know how

to check e-mail or talk with a headset on the phone!

It kept me extremely busy but didn't pay squat! :grr:

Assuming your job is to check on stupid: What are the consequences of you being stupider than "stupid"?

21. Well,
if I were stupider than stupid, I would probably not be employed. Maybe you are better qualified to answer the question you ask: "What are the consequences of you being stupider than "stupid"?" In fact, I am sure you are the ideal one to address that issue. I look forward to your usual insights.
