Cambodian ex-official hauled off to U.N. court

By AP Wire Services
11/12/2007

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (AP) -- Police detained the former foreign minister of the Khmer Rouge regime and took him by convoy to Cambodia's U.N.-assisted genocide tribunal Monday for prosecution.

Police entered Ieng Sary's home at dawn and later put him into a car that was part of a 10-vehicle convoy headed to tribunal offices.

An Associated Press reporter saw Ieng Sary arriving at the tribunal's offices later in the morning.

A tribunal spokesman, Reach Sambath, said Ieng Sary and his wife, Ieng Thirith, had been brought to court according to a warrant that had been issued by the tribunal, but he gave no details of the charges they faced.

2. I really do believe in the end we as a country are much bigger than the sum of our parts
people are waking up to the bush/cheney crimes and are starting to accept the fact that yep looks like America can have War Criminals too. Remember a year or so back when poppy had his big cry, well that was when he realized that the way of son1 would ultimately blow the lid off the whole BFEE, theres many crimes in that family and lots of time to delve into them. Crimes, unlike people don't die and go away.

3. Even with Cambodia, getting that tribunal was not easy
It took brave actions of some current Cambodians plus assistance from the international community. In this case, the form of tribunal was brokered by Senator Kerry in the late 1990s.

The US is far more powerful and barring any change in that may never be called to account by the international community. Only in defeat was Germany, a previously powerful country, subject to the Nuremberg trials. Although we need these people out of power, it would be extremely humiliating if the US had to be held to account by the international community.

4. Humiliation then, is a price we'll have to pay if we want to remain undefeated
and its true we'll be plowing new ground but plow we must. These crimes committed are egregious crimes against humanity and they must not stand

5. That's why I hope we will defeat them here
Typically the international courts only address things that the country itself failed too.

I agree with you that these things needed to be addressed. I am part of the America that says that America does not torture period. That is our America - and it was stolen when Bush stole the election in 2000. All his actions have become far more apparent since 2004 - in a way he may wish that he hadn't cheated to win 2004. For the rest of us, it will be even harder to fix things starting in 2009.
