Holy Generosity! Mystery donor give $100 million dollars to the city of Erie
Edited on Mon Nov-12-07 03:58 PM by cali
or to be more precise to charities within the city of Erie, which is one of the hurtingest places in the country. What a wonderful act of generosity.

Mystery $100M donation lifts Pa. city By JENNIFER C. YATES, Associated Press Writer
1 hour, 22 minutes ago

ERIE, Pa. - Mike Batchelor invited the heads of 46 charities into his downtown office for one-on-one meetings to personally deliver the news. Nearby, on a small table, sat a box of tissues.

And then he proceeded: A donor had given a staggering $100 million to the Erie Community Foundation, and all of the charities would receive a share.

That was when the tears began to flow — and the mystery began — in this struggling old industrial city of 102,000 on Lake Erie, where the donor is known only as "Anonymous Friend."

Batchelor, president of the Erie Community Foundation, has been sworn to secrecy and will allow only that the donor worked with the organization for years to identify deserving recipients before the announcement over the summer.

Is the donor dead or alive? No comment, Batchelor says. What is the donor's connection to Erie? No comment.

The talk about the gift has taken an interesting turn in recent weeks: As much as everyone here would like to know their benefactor's identity, many are also reluctant to pry.

5. My husband's from Erie. Never thought it was especially a Repub-seeming
town (except maybe the west side)--always struck me as more blue-collar/union Democratic, like Pittsburgh. This was a nice deed for the old "mistake on the lake".

6. The most well-intentioned charities are given in silence...
The most well-intentioned charities are given in silence, whilst the marketing ploys are given in front of giant fake checks with thousands of flashbulbs popping all around.

Good for this guy and good for the charities of Erie...

9. Prop checks are not all bad
It's what the Clinton Global Intiative is all about...making people commit to putting their money where their mouth is. If they do it on stage at an event, so what. Money still goes to good causes from what I can see.

But yes, this is a wonderful, wonderful donor to do such a thing.

10. 100 million divided by number of households below $100K a year combined income

would jumpstart the economy more than "charities" deciding who was 'worthy" of assistance..

OR

how 'bout paying for 2 years college (wall-to-wall) for every graduating senior, and using the rest as a scholarship fund for every kid who graduates with a B average?? THAT would spark some serious studying:) and boost the economy at the same time.. (parents strapped from paying college money would have more to spread around the local economy)
