U.S. Democrats in Mexico Call for Impeachment

Initially, as a loyal Democrat, I was definitely not in favor of
making impeachment a major issue in an election year in which we have
a fantastic field of candidates and a Republican president with record
low popularity ratings. I was the "doubting Thomas". But, now I am a
convert on this issue and I support impeachment of President George W.
Bush and Vice President Richard Cheney. I am pleased to be a part of
the effort on behalf of all American Democrats in Mexico in the
drafting and passage of a resolution (see below) that is one step
toward restoring the global reputation of the United States of
America.
Why is it important what Americans abroad think about politics in
general and impeachment in particular? Well, there are an estimated
six million Americans living outside the United States, according to
estimates of the State Department, and that does not include military
and government employees. There are an estimated one million Americans
in Mexico, the largest number of Americans abroad in any one country.
Democrats Abroad is recognized as a "state" party by the Democratic
National Committee (DNC) and is represented on the DNC by eight voting
members, as well as at the quadrennial Democratic National Convention.
Democrats Abroad has active committees in more than 100 countries in
Europe, Asia, Africa and the Americas.
Now, I would like to tell you the five reasons why I was not an early
advocate of making impeachment a priority and why I have changed my
mind on each of these points.
First, I felt it was simply too late. Then it was pointed out to me
that the entire impeachment process of Richard Nixon, from the first
hearings in the House until his resignation, took only three and a
half months. The trumped-up impeachment of President Clinton, from the
first hearings in the House until the President was found not guilty
of all charges in the Senate took only four months. George W. Bush and
Dick Cheney have almost one year and three months remaining in their
terms. There is time!
Second, I felt there was no groundswell of public support for
impeachment in America. Like many Americans of my age in Mexico, I get
most of my news from the cable and network television stations. And
that's unfortunate because they are not broadcasting what is really
happening in our country, at least not yet. Throughout the United
States between one and two million people are involved in the
impeachment movement. From Homer, Alaska to Atlanta, Georgia and all
in between, groups are collecting petition signatures and paying
visits to their congressional representatives. Vermont has voted for
impeachment and Oregon is about to do the same. Six state
legislatures, including California, have voted to support impeachment
and over one hundred cities and towns across the nation have voted to
support impeachment. There is a groundswell of support for impeachment
and it's growing every day. Many of us now fear that unless we as a
party take action very soon, we may well be seen as the French general
who was sitting with a friend on the Champs Elysees sipping wine when
hundreds of revolutionary troops with pikes and muskets rushed by. The
general jumped up and said, "There go my troops. I must run and lead
them."
