6. Hubby had a patient need a new doctor--first appt was in May!
His patient is moving to an area where he knows one of the internists (was ahead of him in residency), so he recommended his friend. The patient called back--first new patient appt was in May! Hubby called and got her in sooner, but he was shocked. New patients only wait a week or so for him, so he asked his friend what was up. They lost six out of nine FPs in a year (all for different reasons), and all the docs are overbooked.

People do need early detection and should be able to get in quickly.

7. My dad was a doctor and if someone phoned with a serious worry, he'd see
them that day. The person might have had to sit in the waiting room for a while, but my dad would work him in. And he had a very busy practice. This is just wrong.

8. That hasn't been my experience
My wife has had to wait months to see thyroid specialists. Perhaps in big cities things are great, but in smaller ones the overload is significant.

9. Yeah - I'm sure it's much tougher in smaller cities.
How's your wife? I finally had to have my thyroid removed, so I know how thyroid problems can affect EVERYTHING --

14. We have had a hard time
She had half of hers removed, and we could not get the dosage right. It has taken literally years to get her back to normal, and even then if we change anything, including type of thyroid medication, things get screwed up again. Most docs unfortunately look at her blood thyroid levels and see they are in the normal range and don't help with the problems (weight gain, lack of sleep or excessive tiredness at odd hours).

My Father was a doc and I remember how things were a few decades ago. I think that memory permeates America and blinds many of us to the fact that things have changed. When we lived in DC we had great medical care, when we moved to Texas and Georgia, not so good.

17. There's definitely a shortage in rural areas.
It's really bad, too. Many docs don't want to live in smaller cities and towns, so it's hard to get them there. In Manistee, MI, you should see how awesome their recruiting package is, and they still have trouble getting and keeping people there.

18. I live smack dab in the middle of Chicago and still have problems.
Yes, I can see *a* doctor pretty quickly if I am in bad shape, but seeing *my* doctor is hard. I called in early August and she was booked until mid-October. I really like her though, and it takes so long to find a doctor that doesn't dismiss your concerns or immediately start writing a million prescriptions for everything.

16. That's what my hubby does if at all possible.
New patients or patients in trouble usually can be worked in.

Ryan's taking care of Hubby's patient, but I'm still shocked that he's that backed up and seeing a more than full patient load every day as it is.

13. I'm not surprised
I can only get in to see my GP once or twice a year at best. I've been trying to get in since June for a few tests, but they just can't fit me in. There's a serious GP shortage out there.

15. If you need tests, can they order them somewhere else?
We have a central testing lab here that my doctor sends all of my testing orders to. The lab techs are better there for blood draws anyway.
