Another day... Another VETO!!!!!!!!!

Another Day, Another Veto

After letting it gather dust for the first five years of his presidency, George Bush has been getting a lot of use out of his veto pen. And once again he has used it to veto a popular bill with strong bipartisan support:

President Bush, escalating his budget battle with Congress, on Tuesday vetoed a spending measure for health and education programs prized by congressional Democrats.

So, let's see. He's vetoed stem cell research, a withdrawal timetable for Iraq, health care for children, education...but he did sign an:

...increase in the defense bill is devoted to procuring new and expensive weapons systems, including $6.3 billion for the next-generation F-35 Joint Strike Fighter, $2.8 billion for the Navy's DD(X) destroyer and $3.1 billion for the new Virginia-class attack submarine.

And of course, the increase for the defense budget doesn't include the $192 billion Bush wants to pay for his grand adventure in Iraq.

1. Sure, now he knows how to veto, he does it more!
It only took him six-1/2 years to learn!

His vetoes:
1. July 19, 2006: Vetoed H.R. 810, Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act of 2005, a bill to ease restrictions on federal funding for embryonic stem cell research. Override attempt failed in House, 235-193 (286 needed).

2. May 1, 2007: Vetoed H.R. 1591, U.S. Troop Readiness, Veterans' Care, Katrina Recovery, and Iraq Accountability Appropriations Act, 2007. Override attempt failed in House, 222-203 (284 needed). A later version of the bill that excluded certain aspects of the initial legislation that the President disapproved of, H.R. 2206, was enacted as Pub.L. 110-28 with the President's approval.

3. June 20, 2007: Vetoed S. 5, Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act of 2007.

4. October 3, 2007: Vetoed H.R. 976, Children's Health Insurance Program Reauthorization Act of 2007 ("SCHIP"). Override attempt failed in House, 273-156 (286 votes needed).

5. November 2, 2007: Vetoed H.R. 1495, Water Resources Development Act of 2007. Overridden by House, 361-54 (277 votes needed). Overridden by Senate, 79-14 (62 needed), and enacted as Pub.L. 110-114 over President's veto.

And he will continue to veto - even though he states he wants to compromise if the Dems talk to him!

3. Children won't grow up to die in oil wars if they're properly educated and taken care of.

4. But what about the will of the people?
Boy, didn't we hear a LOT about that then the Republican majority was being threatened every so often by the Democratic minority. "Democrats are blocking the will of the people! Upperdown vote! No filibuster, it's unamerican!"

And now? Not a peep out of those stalwart defenders of democracy. Fortunately, the Democratic leadership isn't one to bring up past transgressions and throw their own words right back at them, so the hypocrisy train can roll along unimpeded.

5. This freakin' tickles the shit out of me: Dems cave to enable junior's war and other priorities and
junior vetoes every one of Dems' priorities. Tickles the shit out of me how slow on uptake Dems are: it's like Dems are being taken to the slaughterhouse with big, shit-eating grins on their faces.
