Here's an excellent reason to have cranberries with your Thanksgiving dinner...
Why cranberries alter E. coli bacteria

WORCESTER, Mass., Nov. 13 (UPI) -- Not only is the cranberry one of the stars of Thanksgiving Day, but U.S. researchers say compounds in cranberries may be anti-bacterial agents.

Researchers at Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Massachusetts have found that compounds in cranberries are able to alter E. coli bacteria. Associate professor Terri Camesano and graduate students Yatao Liu and Paola Pinzon-Arango have used the atomic force microscope and other sophisticated tools to study how a group of tannins found primarily in cranberries interact with bacteria at the molecular level.

The cranberry compounds prevent E. coli from adhering to cells in the body -- a necessary first step in infections such as urinary tract infections -- because:

-- The chemical changes caused by cranberry juice create an energy barrier that keeps the bacteria from getting close to the urinary tract lining

2. There's a lot of good things about cranberries
The juice is good for kidneys too. Too bad I'm the only one in my family who doesn't much care for cranberries.

4. And I think the acid in
cranberries help digest the animal protein of turkey.

Can we hardly wait for bushis to "pardon a turkey" again this year?

Which turkey will it be?

7.  My mom would give me cranberry juice when I had bladder infections
as a child. I think it worked at least my mom thinks so.
Thanks to that I like cranberry juice. Oddly though, I don't like regular cranberries. Go figure...:)

15. Anyway, like I was sayin'
cranberries is the king of the fruits. You can barbecue it, boil it, broil it, bake it, saute it. Dey's uh, cranberry-kabobs, cranberry creole, cranberry gumbo. Pan fried, deep fried, stir-fried. There's pineapple cranberry, lemon cranberry, coconut cranberry, pepper cranberry, cranberry soup, cranberry stew, cranberry salad, cranberry and potatoes, cranberry burger, cranberry sandwich. That- that's about it.

9. They come in pill form now
Pop a couple of cranberry liqui-gels every day and keep the urinary tract infection away. Ya don't even have to taste 'em. :)

8. When making the mirepoix for your stuffing this year...
Try substituting fennel bulb for the onions.

It smells and tastes delicious, was used by the original pilgrims, and it also cures cancer, gout, dropsy, feminine troubles, gonorrhea, pinheadism, croup, cholera, the screaming shits, uppityness, premarital woes, gangrene, and papism.

10. Holy fuck, we agree on something
well, not completely. I've long used fennel in my stuffing, along with leeks and celery. It's one of my favorite veggies.

Just because I committ massive volumes of win and pwnage on this board it doesn't mean I let it go to my head.

Can you imagine how bad I'd be if I had my ego involved? Jesus.

13. I remember learning in school that the native Americans pounded venison and cranberries together
into a paste that could be stored without spoiling. And voila, now the descendants of white European invaders have "discovered" the antibacterial properties of cranberries. Whoopie for us, by gollies.

19. Does that include the can-shaped ones?
You know--the tube-shaped ones complete with the grooves of the metal can that slides out with that thwoccckkkk noise? And then you cut it into slices and the slices stand up on the plate?

We've since shamed my mom into making real cranberries for Thanksgiving, but we'll always have a place in our hearts for the can-shaped cranberries of our youth!
