4. You live close to the New Madrid fault. A 7.7 there could
cause considerable damage in Nashboro.

My wife used to be cashier at Pancake Pantry. I used to worry about her if a quake hit nearby.

8. friends in Memphis are much more aware of New Madrid than Nashvegans...
i was roused from a deep sleep one night in nashville from a little 4.3 trembler. it FREAKED me out. another thing people don't think about is that the Appalachians are full fault lines -- LOTS of nuclear and chemical industries are tucked away in the east tennessee mountains.

i'm in Florida now, so i'm more (personally) worried about storms and fires.

the Pancake Pantry!!! i miss the old building, but it's still a landmark.

9. I saw a show on earthquakes once that said if the New Madrid had a severe enough quake
we might even feel it in Minnesota as it could effect the whole Mississippi valley.

6. Cracks & damage in Antofagasta so far, not Santiago...
they were showing government buildings or some sort of office being evacuated in La Paz, but no damage there so far either. The thing covered an area 1300 miles broad, but they've stopped saying that now, too. It lasted almost an entire minute, loud and long.

Chile mineral mine region is where it was centered.

11. I wonder if removing millions of tons of material over a fault could
make a quake more likely?

12. I've wondered the same sort of things, myself...
but there doesn't seem to be much science to back up those worries. The Pacific Ring has sure been active lately, all the way around, so I was kind of anticipating a large one down in South America and keeping the possibility of The Big One hitting up here in Cascadia close to the back of my mind, too. Earthquakes and volcanoes scare the kerap out of me!

14. It seems that there is a bit of activity in areas that have drained their
aquifers. That's what made me think about the mines.

7. Well, I thought I heard them say that when they first broke the news...
but now they're not saying it anymore. Also, no more tsunami warning.

10. I just saw an aftershock.
I am using GEE, the Global Earthquake Explorer to watch for earthquakes.

13. The worst major earthquake I ever experienced in my life was
in the same area in 1948. Fortunately, the area is sparsely populated. There are lots of volcanoes in No. Chile. I wonder if one of them is getting ready to explode? Are they sure this is only techtonic activity?
