John McCain's racist remark very troubling

Thursday, March 2, 2000

By KATIE HONG
SPECIAL TO THE POST-INTELLIGENCER

On his campaign bus recently, Sen. John McCain told reporters, "I hated the gooks. I will hate them as long as I live." Although McCain said he was referring only to his prison guards, there are many reasons why his use of the word "gook" is offensive and alarming.

It is offensive because by using a racial epithet that has historically been used to demean all Asians to describe his captors, McCain failed to make a distinction between his torturers and an entire racial group.

It is alarming because a major candidate for president publicly used a racial epithet, refused to apologize for doing so and remains a legitimate contender.

Contrary to McCain's attempt to narrowly define "gook" to mean only his "sadistic" captors, this term has historically been used to describe all Asians. McCain said that "gook" was the most "polite" term he could find to describe his captors, but because it is simply a pejorative term for Asians, he insulted his captors simply by calling them "Asians" -- a clearly disturbing message. To the Asian American community, the term is akin to the racist word "nigger." A friend of mine, a white male Vietnam veteran, pointed out that veterans, especially Vietnam veterans, know how spiteful the term "gook" is. It has everything to do with labeling someone as "other," the enemy and yellow. McCain sent the message that all Asians are foreigners and remain forever the "other" and the enemy.

5. A supporter, evidently, but in McCain's presence
Don't know if he disavowed the statement.

22. to be fair, he only mugged for a second, then emphasized twice that he respected Sen. Clinton
No, he didn't chew out the mean lady who said that. But he did politely distance himself from the sentiment. He's really not a hateful guy. I mean, unless you're a "gook".

24. Actually McCain told the supporter that it was an 'excellent question'
http://blogs.usatoday.com/onpolitics/2007/11/whats-new-9.html

The New York Times -- McCain, the "B-word" and Clinton: On Monday, Republican presidential candidate Sen. John McCain "received a question from a woman in Hilton Head Island, S.C., that was blunt and harsh. 'How do we beat the bitch?' the woman asked. Mr. McCain was obviously uncomfortable, trying to deflect the vitriol with humor and offering to give a translation. But he did not condemn the questioner, instead calling it an 'excellent question.' He then addressed the question without any apparent doubt as to whom it referred.

4. Juicy, but McCain did not call HRC a bitch.
And to jump on this Vietnam Vet, Ex POW for his use of the word "gook" is disingenuous.
Not that I am in any way in support of McCain's candidacy.

9. So racism is OK if you were victimized by the party you wish to offend?
Edited on Wed Nov-14-07 12:45 PM by FredScuttle
If McCain was taken prisoner during the Congo Crisis and tortured by Africans, we should accept it if he calls his tormentors "niggers"?

Or if he was held during the 1968 student uprisings in Mexico, would it be OK for him to call his captors "spics" or "beaners"?

15. I could care less what's bandied about at the VFW post
But wearing as a badge of honor the "right" to use an ugly racial slur puzzles me. We owe our Vietnam vets a lot of things, but leeway to toss out racial slurs shouldn't be one of them

6. K&R.
Let's not forget that Newt Gingrich's mother told the entire world that her son also referred to HIllary as the "bitch". To his mother, for Pete's sake.

Thanks for reminding everyone about McCain's use of the word "gook" even as recent as in 2000.

This is not a man with the temperament to be President.

Seems to be a common insult in Newtie's family.

Then Hillary played it perfectly. She invited Mrs Gingrich over to tea. Very classy.

In my ever-so-humble opinion. There's just a wee bit of DU-hypocrisy going on here.

11. thinking of another thread
I wondered aloud whether Bush hatred had not made rational discussion of politics in Washington all but impossible.

Yeah deep rational stuff like this from McCain really makes rational discussion easy.

13. The way I heard it, McCain responded to someone else calling Hillary that
He did not use "bitch" himself.

He did, however respond without taking issue with the epithet. Indeed, he responded
as if what he had heard was perfectly in keeping with his own sentiments--rather bad
form as she is a sitting U.S., Senator, as he is. Maybe if someone had asked him if she
should go fuck herself, he might have asked for the tone of the conversation to change.

Or maybe not. McCain does seem rather full of himself these days.

14. Don't mind Mc Cain. He's gets confused about where he is, sometimes.
Usually when people get like this, they retire, tucked away from the public eye. Now would be a good time for Mc Cain to start enjoying his mental sunset years watching Matlock reruns.
