Midland County Republican Party activists applauded Monday after a Republican clergyman said "the more Hillary Rodham Clinton lays out her vision for America, the better all of our candidates look."

The Rev. Keith A. Butler of Southfield, a former Detroit city councilman, appears to be nearing election next year to a Michigan seat on the Republican National Committee.

He lost to Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard in 2006 when both sought the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate. Democrat Debbie Stabenow won re-election by defeating Bouchard.

Butler, at a Midland County Republican fundraising breakfast Monday, said the 2008 election will be the nation's and Republican Party's most important so far.
