CBS investigation finds alarming rate of veteran suicides.

Last night, CBS News reported that their five-month investigation of veterans’ deaths revealed data that shows a startling rate of suicide. Chief Investigative Reporter Armen Keteyian reported that veterans were more than twice as likely to commit suicide in 2005 than non-vets. Veterans committed suicide at the rate of between 18.7 to 20.8 per 100,000, compared to other Americans, who did so at the rate of 8.9 per 100,000. Watch it:

1. If only they had conservative values
If only they were pro life. If only they intensely hated gays. They would have no problem killing and slaughtering humans in Iraq or elsewhere and of course suicide would not be an issue. But on the plus side for bush and his fellow members of the party of integrity, the vets who kill themselves won't be around to "whine" about piss poor medical treatment.

2. Let's be careful with this.

We saw a very similar impact on returning Vietnam veterans and it morphed into some perception that it was greater than it was or long-lasting. The fact of the matter was that, although the suicide rate among discharged Vietnam veterans was about 1.7 times greater than the general population during the first five years after 'coming home,' it was actually lower among such veterans after that period than among non-veterans.

This is, imho, a very important factor and serves us to comprehend that it's the readjustment to "the world" and how such folks are reintegrated into our community. It's just NOT sufficient to dump them back on the block and treat them like lepers until they "get over it."
