CNN Confesses Sin of "Unfortunate Omission", Did Not Give Full Disclosure on Carville Post-Debate!

This debate just blew up in Hillary's face in the NY Times. Jonathan Klein, the CNN president just admitted that Anderson Cooper's introduction of Carville had an "unfortunate omission"! But why was Carville selected with Gergen in the first place to do post-dabtae analysis!?!?

Carville painted a picture of a victorious Clinton of course.

That is the real fix that's going on here and I hope this continues so that people criticize CNN not for the omission but for the selction of Carville in the first place as he is too obviously biased to do post-debate analysis.

Clinton Friend’s Role Sets Off Intense Criticism of CNN and a Re-examination

Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton prepared for a battle with her Democratic rivals at the CNN-sponsored debate on Thursday night. She did not have much to fear from the postdebate round table.

Candidate Topic PagesMore Politics NewsAmong the experts trotted out by CNN to comment was James Carville, a Democratic strategist and CNN commentator who is also a close friend of Mrs. Clinton and a contributor to her campaign.

Mr. Carville’s presence aroused the fury of rivals and bloggers. They called it a conflict of interest and criticized CNN.

“Would it kill CNN to disclose that James Carville is a partisan Clinton supporter when talking about the presidential race?” Markos Moulitsas wrote on his liberal blog, Daily Kos. Mr. Moulitsas drew hundreds of comments.

Tom Reynolds, a spokesman for Gov. Bill Richardson of New Mexico, who is also seeking the Democratic nomination, said: “What you saw last night lacked full disclosure. The average viewer out in middle America may not know the inside-the-Beltway connection.”

A CNN executive conceded that the cable channel should have more fully disclosed Mr. Carville’s past and that it was discussing how to handle such situations.

The criticisms were among a series against CNN for how it managed the debate, a two-hour event in Las Vegas that ran nearly 15 minutes late. Viewers criticized segments like the opening, when candidates bounded onto the stage in a style reminiscent of a sports event.

Voters and commentators wrote online about how the audience cheered and booed, the way the CNN hosts reframed audience questions and whether it was correct to demand yes-or-no answers to complex questions.

http://www.nytimes.com/2007/11/17/us/politics/17cnn.html?_r=1&ei=5090&en=b62c3708e23a70cc&ex=1352955600&adxnnl=1&oref=slogin&partner=rssuserland&emc=rss&adxnnlx=1195326986-4AkfqaNC9I62uMm+Wir4QA

CNN executives said they routinely reminded viewers of Mr. Carville’s affiliation in his segments. On Thursday, Anderson Cooper, the CNN host who moderated the round table, said, “I should point out David Gergen was an adviser in the Bill Clinton White House, as, of course, was James Carville.”

That was not enough for Jonathan Klein, the CNN president who said in an interview that the disclosure fell short.

“He’s not on the Hillary payroll, but he’s on the Hillary bandwagon, and that should be disclosed as much as we can,” Mr. Klein said. “I wasn’t comfortable with it myself as I watched it.

“He has disclosed all of this previously and repeatedly on our air,” he continued. “He happened not to last night, and it’s an unfortunate omission.”

If you want CNN to have a bigger black eye over their fixing of the post-debate and get them to change their behavior, RECOMMEND

30. Does any one really think that post-debate viewers didn't know who Carville was?
I mean really, only the junkies watched the debate and only we ultra-junkies watched the post debate.
Much a-do, over less than nothing, in my opinion.
YMMV.

33. From what I have heard
there were more than just political junkies watching this debate. There is a serious issue with most people who traditionally vote Democrat being quite confused over the primary race. I have yet to hear a majority of people where I live and work claim that they like Hillary, yet it's perplexing to understand this in light of the media coverage.

After watching the post debate commentary, I was really confused, thinking that perhaps they were commenting on a debate other than the one I watched. What I can say is that when discussing it with someone who I am close to who is not affiliated with any political party, he claimed that he thought that Hillary was abysmal and that Kucinich was great. Mind you, this is a person who FORCED me to read Ayn Rand when I was in my 20's (in the day of the dinosaur)

It was obvious he was biased for Hillary. Nothing wrong with that. But why not get pundits who were not so biased for commentary. It isn't as if Carville and Gerkin were the only ones free that night....

Quite frankly, as bad as pundit analysis has been, maybe the networks should just skip it entirely and let the "debates" speak for themselves!

There were just too many goofy things about last week's debate, as pointed out above.

You're claiming the political junkies tuned in to a post debate show would have no idea who James Carville was? And that CNN tried to foist a stealth Clintonista onto an unsuspecting audience? That's silly.

remember Clinton years, and vaguely at that... I was in highschool and college. I remember Carville because he married the Repug wife and that was like some huge controversy, even though it happens everyday all across America. Anyway, I remember, but I doubt any 20yr old remembers who he was back when they were like 8 yrs old. Not everyone knows who these people are. And if I asked an average Joe who Carville was, I highly doubt they'd know. Have you ever seen those clips when people go out onto the street and half of them can't name the V.P., how the hell would they identify an old Clinton advisor and friend? I agree its deceitful.. and I think more people are trying to pay attention this time around... I think we all agree we don't want another Bush and we don't want to be dupped again.

84. James Carville and David Gergen both worked for the Mr. Clinton Administration
Both of these people were instrumental in moving the Clinton administration and the Democratic Party to the right (i.e. toward the issues that benefit the corporations only). I remember this well, unlike some in the media.

This is beyond pale how this Debate and the follow-up (Post Debate) was planned and executed with the people who worked for the Clinton's.

If this group Democrats had any clue this would became the "talk of the town" and how badly it could damage the cause of all Democratic Candidates or the election process as a whole, thus may lead to the destruction of this country just to get somebody in power, then this group is deplorable. That is if this group had a clue! Now if this group did not care about the results of their actions just to get somebody in power, then they rate right up there with the Bush Jr. Administration. There is no ifs, ands or buts, the damage has been done!

Did Carville Tip Bush Off to Kerry Strategy (Woodward)

By M.J. Rosenberg | bio

On page 344, Woodward describes the doings at the White House in the early morning hours of Wednesday, the day after the '04 election.

Apparently, Kerry had decided not to concede. There were 250,000 outstanding ballots in Ohio.

So Kerry decides to fight. In fact, he considers going to Ohio to camp out with his voters until there is a recount. This is the last thing the White House needs, especially after Florida 2000.

-snip

"Carville told her he had some inside news. The Kerry campaign was going to challenge the provisional ballots in Ohio -- perhaps up to 250,000 of them. 'I don't agree with it, Carville said. I'm just telling you that's what they're talking about.'

-snip

HOW CONVENIENT FOR HRC THAT KERRY/EDWARDS DID NOT FIGHT FOR THOSE OHIO VOTES!

That was running against Chavez in Venezuela.

Also, some involved with the Ohio matter think the number of ballots that were available to be counted was closer to 400,00 - but as the saying goes, "But who is counting??"

Kerry gets led into believing that he has only 150,000 to 160,000 ballots to offer him any hope of catching up to Bush's 138,000 ballot lead (A lead that will over the years get dropped down to roughly 40,000! But again, who is counting??)

Meanwhile, Ms Pearls and Diamonds is calling Edwards and scolding him for "Grandstanding" over the election.

In other words, she was adamant that the election be given to Bush so that the state of the Country would be totally rotten by 2008 and she could be swept into victory.

Who comes out of this looking good? Well at least in this instance - Edwards. He trusts his own political instincts and his intuition and he remains insistent that the votes be counted.

Whereas Kerry makes a concession - before a full 24 hours since the last ballot was cast
has passed! And he is like a kicked dog, offering an apology for how he divided the nation.

It is a lot of fun when it is your candidate is supported by the mainstream media.

The neocons rocked not that long ago. They had uproarius fun at Dem's expense. And they had the full support of the media.

It's not Hillary that we have the problem with, per se. It's the media.

When I first heard about Hillary's deal with Murdoch, I was elated and laughed my ass off. Now that I've had time to think about it, the idea chills me to the bone.

On many social issues, it will be refreshing to have Hillary. But *how* she is getting there is a big problem.

Hail, Hillary.

38. A 'rec' is a Recommend.
After an appropriate amount of posts, a DUer can recommend an original post (an OP) by clicking the Recommend button in the bottom left hand corner of the OP.

Also, you may want to know that a Kick (K) is when you respond to an OP with the word "kick" to make that topic OP get kicked up to the top of the discussion board, so a "K&R" is both a Kick and a Recommend, often accompanied with the :dem: or :kick: smilies.

43. I realize that and, maybe I'm just so numb these days, cynical , if you will,
but, why does this surprise people?

The planted and choreographed questions bother me much more than Carville's pretending to appear as objective -- I mean, did we not know he wasn't objective? I mean, don't most people know Carville was the lead campaign strategist of Bill Clinton?

Btw, doesn't mean I think it's right -- CNN and Carville need to be called out on this crap -- I'm just surprised at the 'shock' of people, especially seasoned DUers.

50. I know Carville is a partisan, but Im sure many dont.
I personally dont watch CNN, i watch MSNBC, so i didnt expect to see two republicans, one of which was a clinton advisor and a partisan like Carville, it did surprise me. The entire debate was a sham, with the pro-Clinton crowd, uneccessary booing, and piss-poor moderating by Wolf Blitzer. How does a man have a name like Wolf, and act like such a fucking pussy cat.

40. I would like to know why Wolf Blitzer
has treated Edwards the way he has... I knew as soon as he put him on the end, he was going to lay it to Edwards, and he did trying to stop him every way he could, frankly when Edwards ask kiddingly who planted the one question, Wolf said yes it was planted I did the planting, it seemed to me you could see the anger toward Edwards from Wolf... My husband has told me for a couple of years that CNN is as bad as Fox and just as much a republican station.

55. if anyone in this country does not know that Mr. Carville does not know
or support the Clintons, they must have just landed here from another planet.

Why would they need "full" disclosure of something that is basially like saying "and Rush Limbaugh is a talk show host who likes Republicans."

56. 200 million or more unitedstatesians
don't follow the news. only 2 or 3 million people are watching cnn news on a given night. add a few million for the other networks and you've got 5 million or so people out of the entire sentient (if you'll pardon the expression) population of the US who might have paid attention. so 1% of people might possibly, if the best of all possible worlds, have one iota of awareness of political personalities.

so most viewers won't bother to ask, "who the heck is james carville why is he saying those awful things about everyone else?" No, they'll take that talking head as a credible authority on how to think.

57. They should not have had Carville, or for that matter any of the republicans
on that after the debate analysis

They should have put up neutral people to discuss the debate, but does it really surprise anyone about the media in this country, especially after what we have been through the last 15 years

71. Didn't Carville say: Democratic voters are like cattle, you just herd them in the direction you
want them to go and use a cattle-prod on the few stragglers. This is paraphased from memory as I recall reading it in the book "Nastiest Things Ever Said about Democrats" by Martin Higgins. He believes himself to be a member of the elite and has nothing but disdain for the working class Democrat, fuck him and the ruling class.

80. The Corp. knows the only chance we have at a real change is in the primaries
Edited on Sun Nov-18-07 12:00 PM by Android3.14
It is blatantly obvious that Clinton is damaged goods, unable to unify the Democratic Party, much less the nation.
She is the choice of the corporatists. And the corporatists are running scared that the people (Democrats, Republicans, and independent voters) are going to elect leaders to represent human beings, rather than boardrooms.
Her mouthpieces, both paid and unpaid, are unconvincing, and even sound as proudly ignorant as those who blindly support Bush (though they are not nearly as annoying). This tells me that corporate propaganda is largely the base of her support, rather than actual populism.
Mrs. 'Droid and I, are planning to vote against Clinton in the primaries, probably for Kucinich or Edwards, possibly Obama (though he seems to have flamed out). If Clinton wins the nomination, we plan to vote for a candidate that supports the people, and I guarantee it won't be Clinton.
Some Clinton supporters will say, "You're throwing your vote away."
To which I respond, "So are you."

81. Oh please, she is not alone there as pretty much everyone
currently running is accepting cash from corporations regardless of party, it needs reform and it needs it badly but its not going to happen if we just whine about it and just focus on a single candidate and not really push for it harder to be fixed itself instead.
As for people in the anti Hillary camp *shrug* I wont even attempt to sway them to be openminded as its a pointless effort to waste my time with them.
To everyone else I say vote for whoever can do the best job in the end, it might be Hillary or it might be Edwards or Obama, maybe even someone who is not well known or it might even be a republican but remember try to keep an openmind and not block yourself into one mindset on voting as your vote is important.
