22. I was responding to the portion of your query re: EST.
EST won the POLL AXER dirty trick, and did not use it before the 900 mark was reached. That's why it expired.

I am not donating this quarter because every single cent our family makes that is "spare" is going towards helping a terminally ill friend with insufficient insurance. It won't be much longer and it is the least we can do.

3. I can only speak for myself, sis...
Having donated at my 1,000th post not too long ago, It's just too tight to do anything this month. I already feel bad because I've donated to Truthout twice before but can't now. I know they're having a really slow response to their November pledge. Some who read TO have yet to donate as yet.

I wonder how many people will be out there on "Black Friday"?

4. Strategery and gamesmanship
This fund drive had more to it than the others, and people planned the timing of their donations to affect their "candidate's steps.."

and once the super powers were withheld and not played, people probably decided to wait.. why move your candidate BEFORE the super power got played..

then I donated again, and divvied them up..in hopes of getting a super power.. did not get one though

I mistakenly gave 23 steps to the candidate that I don't like. I had to donate again to repair the damage lol.

6. Things are really tight here.
My husband lost his job this week, and we were living paycheck to paycheck. Now we wait for unemployment. I was hoping to be able to donate. :-( I know many of our neighbors are hurting for food and money, too. Things are bad for so many people. The soup kitchen in Harrisburg is hurting, and they have had a huge increase in people coming in for a daily hot meal. I think Christmas is going to be very dismal for many.

Edited on Sun Nov-18-07 03:01 AM by SoCalDem
The one and only time it happened to my husband was the DAY BEFORE thanksgiving.. luckily he got a 4 month severance package & vacation pay and he actually liked the time off, but still.. to cut someone's job at holiday time is the pits..

My friend and her husband worked together at an antique shop, and they both got laid off last Monday :grr:

I hope a job turns up for your husband, and that you can weather this storm

..."Let's talk about this in January."

Seriously, if ALL of the clients who have told me "Let's talk about this in January" actually talk to me in January and sign on the dotted line, I'm going to be one rich guy.

But on November 17th, I'm afraid I will be remaining supportive yet starless.

10. I donated but
I know a lot of people who are trying to put food on their families (sic) right now. All kidding aside, it's a tough, tough time for many. The dollar is in the toilet, the stock market is crashing, real estate is tanking, credit is costing more, gold is at its highest rate in many years, and this administration completely ignores and denies these problems, because of course their pockets are all heavily lined from seven years of corruption, greed of the highest order, contempt for the middle class, and outright theft of the resources and purse of the American people.

....er...what was the question again....?

16. I would be curious to know how much is due to the rampant ugliness ....
Edited on Sun Nov-18-07 02:28 AM by Trajan
Those who participate in the mudslinging and partisan bickering defend it as their god given right to bare their fists .... But really, it springs more from a 'ME FIRST' impulse, borne, I believe, of Egocentricism ....

And while I might sympathize with the motivation, the result is pure unmitigated meanness and extreme divisiveness .... WHO would want to contribute to this ?

I wonder how many friendships will be lost forever in this donnybrook ?? .....

I already look at some DUers and think 'I could never be friends with him or her', because I have already purged the 'mean and nasties' from my life ..... Why consider letting more in ?

The levels of insult some will stoop to, just to promote their own view, is a pretty serious detriment to future unity, at least with those individuals ..... I expect them to be just as vociferously insulting AFTER the convention .....

The proof will be in the pudding .....

17. My opinion of the "Fun Run" is that it isn't really fun and it has
encouraged more of the ugliness that I have seen here lately. My star just expired and I had planned to donate again, but I have decided to wait until the fund drive is over and donate at that time. That will be payment for all I have enjoyed here over the past year and I haven't yet decided if it will be a farewell also. I am so sick of the vitriol being spewed at fellow Democrats here instead of at the despicable Republicans.

I just don't want to donate during the Fun Run because I feel that would be like supporting all of this divisiveness. My plan is to write to Skinner and explain why I waited to donate until all the so-called "fun" is over.

19. Aw .... I wish I would have known ....
I didnt need the star .... I would have gladly offered it to another weary soul ....

And DONT LEAVE ..... Then the terrorists WILL win ......

I am not going to leave, even if I throw my hands up and say FUCK IT, and walk away for a long while, but leaving isn't in the cards yet .....

Funny how they call it 'fun' ....... not in any way is this fun: It's painful, like an abscess ....

23. Aww, don't worry so much. After it is over, make a note of the order
of "victory" and then, once the primaries have played out, you can start a "compare and contrast" thread. I suspect the end result of this goofy little exercise won't have any basis whatsoever in reality.

28. Yeah, I didn't donate either on those grounds
I concede that it's a clever fundraising idea but as someone who already donated this year, I must say that I don't give money to candidates for the same reasons that I give money to DU, and conflating the two diminishes both.

Babylon ? .... We sometimes dont agree, but NEVER have been ugly about it .... THANKS for that ....

That quote meant alot to me .... watching Senator Byrd thunder from the dais that day four years ago now: I was moved to tears .... it was one of his finest moments as a human being, I believe .... His poor tired body shook and rattled, but his voice crackled with lightning ..... .... He spoke for me that day ...

Thanks Babylonsister >

And I find it divisive and think it is wrong just to use Al Gore's name in it to make money. And perhaps that in and of itself has kept some from donating.

34. sometimes in the past I have waited until the 1000th contribution has come in
because I can't donate very much so that my meager sum won't take away from someone else maybe giving more but this time for some reason I gave at the first sight of the passing of the plate so to say. I really think this is a show of how times are in bushworld.

OTOH it must cost hundreds to keep this place humming along, all the equipment needed doesn't come too cheap either I would bet.

All I do know for a fact is the world would not be the same without Democratic Underground, you'al are making a difference

The economy really sucks right now. Between high gas prices and a grocery bill that is growing and growing, I would think alot of folks are stretched thin at the moment. We also have the holidays coming up which is a rough time of year, too.

37. how about some transparency
adsense advertisements in the political category are pretty well paying... While most forums have low click-thru rates, the obvious incentive to support the site in a political atmosphere I assume makes up largely for that. Combine that with dedicated server hosting prices that aren't that unreasonable in most cases, that this is a high traffic website, and that DU is openly identified as for profit, I frankly would like to know what the monthy server bandwidth consumption is, what the hosting costs are, and how much adsense revenue DU makes to justify a donation.

I seriously debated whether or not to donate this quarter. The hostile, rude tone of a handful of "centrists" seems to be dominating DU discussion lately. But because I still visit this site regularly and am able, I decided I should donate to the fund drive.
