1. I am stunned that a BA in Journalism is not required.
That's stunningly ridiculous.

The pay must be pretty damn low if they have to lower their standards.

(No offense to those who don't have a degree).

2. Peter Jennings didn't even graduate from high school.
They'd rather have that EXPERIENCE block checked than the doggone BA, I guess.

I don't think it's all that absurd, really. A lot of smart people can't AFFORD college anymore. It's been a tight situation since Clinton left the WH.

I know a 'kid' (forty something or so) who started work on a regional paper pretty much right out of high school. He's been a reporter for the same paper for most of his time with them. I don't think he ever bothered to do the college thing. YOu can't tell by reading his stories...

Maybe they've had good luck with the right kind of 'experience.'

4. I don't begrudge anyone for getting a professional
job without a degree.

I'm jealous, but I don't begrudge.

I mean, you hire the best person for the job.

And while I understand people cannot afford to go to college, I can't help but continue to ask myself what was the point of getting my degree when I read stories like this. lol

7. I can't imagine many professions
in which practical experience is more valuable than higher education than in journalism. But — and this is a big "but" — that depends so much on the newsroom(s) one lands in. Some news staffs have good teaching editors, and they're worth their weight in college units. Others — and I'm afraid this may be more the case as time goes on — are made up of deskers who just slash copy to space without telling the reporter what he or she could've done better.

From what I've read in the past few years, writing and reporting are going backward. I see so much in newspapers that's been dumbed down for an audience raised on sound bites.

10. Oh I agree that experience is more valuable.
Internships are worth their weight in gold, or as you put it, college units.

3. The AP doesn't hire reporters who don't have newspaper experience
It's presumed that most newspaper reporters have at least a BA, though this isn't always the case. Some of the best reporters are those who got a "stringer" gig in high school and were on staff by the time they were 21.

The AP pays "competitively," depending on market. Generally, in markets with major daily newspapers, the newspaper reporter will make more than the AP bureau reporter. In a market like Tampa/St. Pete, the two probably make about the same.

But, trust me — almost no one in newspaper journalism who isn't in management is well-paid.

5. I guess that depends on one's definition of what's
well-paid.

Market size is the key.

And it's not just newspaper journalism...with the exception of anchors, broadcast journalist reporters are not exactly living in castles either.

I'm very familiar with this end of the business.

6. Yeah, small- and medium-market teevee reporters
start at even less than their newspaper counterparts.

I once asked one of the local teevee sports guys what he was making. I was shocked; it was less than my salary.

I've seen starting newspaper reporter salaries in places like Idaho and Montana, though, in the $15,000-$20,000 range.

8. I know. That's why I'm pretty defensive of journalists.
People assume (especially electronic journalists) make a ton of money.

I think this fuels the animosity when it comes to accusations that they're "corporate mouthpieces," blah blah, and I know differently.

I even know Democrats who report for Fox (gasp), and I know for a fact that they don't have an agenda.

9. Yup
In 99 percent of cases, it isn't the reporter, but the reporter's boss(es). Reporters don't set agendae, nor do they edit their own work. And those who do edit it are also getting their orders from above.

Shit, we actually agree on something. :D

18. Lol, my fans used to think the same thing about radio personalities
I used to ask them what they thought I made. I always ended up telling them I hope they start a station soon so I could apply.

Strange bedfellows, indeed..

So you can either be an AP reporter, or work at McDonalds, but not both in that State, eh?

So much for my Taking Back the Media I guess, thank god I didn't bother putting a lot of time into that site or anything :)

17. they probably aren't looking for a thinking person. who needs thinking people anymore?
all we need are copywriters who print the bush propaganda word by word.
general assignment? the ideal candidate will read the bush white house propaganda and see how they can frame general news, or breaking news into the white house propaganda/spin of the day.

"AP seeks to build an inclusive organization grounded in respect for differences. equals code words for only white need apply.
