Give peace a chance

Group says wearing their shirts on campus has caused quite a stir

Students at Cocoa Beach Jr./Sr. High are waging a war on peace.

It all started when sophomore Skylar Stains decided to have Peace Shirt Thursdays. Skylar and her friend, Lauren Lorraine, started wearing peace shirts and soon recruited more friends to wear them. Now, the "Peace Shirt Coalition" as they call themselves, has close to 30 students from all grades.

"We've worn handmade peace shirts every Thursday since the first week of school, without fail," Skylar said.

But what started out as a light-hearted gesture soon started to be taken out of context. Students started approaching the group members, yelling obscene things at them, said Lauren.

"People just turned on us like that," she said. "At least 10 boys stood up and yelled things at me at once, and we couldn't even walk through the halls without a harsh comment being made."

much more....

2. Blessed are the peacemakers
I feel for them and send them strength and courage. Those who would hate and kill do not understand that the very ones they are hating and killing are themselves. Those who live by the sword die by the sword.

Any suggestions as to how to let these peace folks know they have support outside their school? I don't understand My Space and how it works, and hesitate to sign up there.

3. This is exactly like Olney, MD
where a gang of pro-war noisemakers insult and harass a small group of Quakers who hold a silent vigil for peace there every Saturday morning.

I keep wondering Why, if they love war so much, they haven't signed up to fight in Iraq themselves.

And just what is it about these pro-war people that they feel compelled to heap insults and violence on those who peacefully campaign for peace? The violent ones seem as though they will never be satisfied until everybody is as violent, angry and dangerous as they are. It's like a disease.

Thank heaven for these high school kids who are pointing the way for the evolution of humankind into a more peaceful, civilized species. Blessings to them!

4. When such an inoffensive protest provokes such a violent
overreaction, at a public High School, it is PAST time for the parents to demand that their children be afforded the protection they should be getting.
