Chris Dodd today released the following statement in response to the claims of former White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan that he "unknowingly passed along false information" to the American public and that "the highest-ranking officials in the administration were involved in doing so," including the Vice-President and the President:

"Today's revelations by Mr. McClellan are very disturbing and raise several important questions that need to be answered. If in fact the President of the United of States knowingly instructed his chief spokesman to mislead the American people, there can be no more fundamental betrayal of the public trust.

"During his confirmation process, Attorney General Mukasey said he would act independently. Accordingly, today, I call on the Attorney General to live up to his word and launch an immediate investigation to determine the facts of this case, the extent of any cover up and determine what the President knew and when he knew it."

8. "I had (unknowingly) passed along false information. "
Does anyone here believe that statement?

Will Mukasey really do anything about this? I will be astounded if he does so.

Leaving it all up to the executive branch's Mukasey is a bad idea. Have him address what is found.

14. Let's refresh our memory with the Plame Affair timeline, shall we?
Can you believe this whole mess started in 2003? Time flies when you're witnessing acts of treason I guess.

Anyway, here's the timeline: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CIA_leak_scandal_timeline

September 16, 2003: Scott McClellan says "it's totally ridiculous" to say Karl Rove was the Plame leaker.<75>

26 September 2003: At CIA Director George J. Tenet's request, the Justice Department begins looking into an allegation that administration officials leaked the identity of an undercover CIA officer to a journalist, an aggravated felony punishable by up to three years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

28 September 2003: A senior administration official tells The Washington Post "that before Novak's column ran, two top White House officials called at least six Washington journalists and disclosed the identity and occupation of Wilson's wife."<182>

29 September 2003: Justice Department asks White House Counsel Alberto Gonzales to preserve all relevant evidence, but inexplicably grants Gonzales an additional overnight delay, and Gonzales informs White House Chief of Staff Andrew Card that night.<76>

29 September 2003: White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan says about Karl Rove: "He wasn't involved,... The president knows he wasn't involved. . . . It's simply not true." "The President has set high standards, the highest of standards for people in his administration. He's made it very clear to people in his administration that he expects them to adhere to the highest standards of conduct. If anyone in this administration was involved in it, they would no longer be in this administration."<77> McClellan went on to say: "The president believes leaking classified information is a very serious matter and it should be pursued to the fullest extent by the appropriate agency and the appropriate agency is the Department of Justice."<78>

29 September 2003: Novak insists that he stumbled on the story himself. "'Nobody in the Bush administration called me to leak this,' Novak said on CNN, saying the information was disclosed to him while he was interviewing a senior Bush administration official.... Novak said the administration official told him in July that Wilson's trip was 'inspired by his wife,' and that the CIA confirmed her 'involvement in the mission for her husband.' ... 'They asked me not to use her name, but never indicated it would endanger her or anybody else,' he said, adding that a source at the CIA told him Plame was 'an analyst — not a covert operator and not in charge of undercover operators.'"<79>

29 September 2003] ABC reporter asks "Did you have any knowledge or did you leak the name of the CIA agent to the press?" Rove answers "No."<80>

30 September 2003: The Justice Department officially launches its full criminal investigation into the leak and requires White House to preserve all relevant evidence.

18. Dodd will 'loophole' the bastards free!
IF Mukasey opens such an investigation, then Leahy or Conters will not do so. Which of the three do you suppose offers the BEST cance for a complete cover up?

IS Dodd doddering?

20. Mukasey: not sure if treaon is a crime.
He thinks it might depend on the type of treason, and who was doing it, and what the circumstances were. But certainly if it were the right sort of treaons then yes he might consider investigating it.

this gets some traction but going by what hasn't happened in the past it hard to believe that all of a sudden there will be a push for accountability.

25. Independent action to a Bush appointee.........
Up to now, that has extended to deciding on their own if they
wanted medium or well-done.

Anything bolder would surprise the hell out of me.
