The only thing I'll be doing at 3 am Friday is Sawing Logs..

5. Do you guys get all night shopping before Christmas?
We have a couple of places that, in the week before Christmas day, will open the Thursday morning and not close until Friday night. 48 hours non-stop shopping. And you'd be supried how many people wander around slack-jawed at 2am with trolleys full of stuff. Wait, you wouldn't.

It's the same kinda thing over Easter when the shops close for a few days. The days before and after the shops are literally packed because people are so fucking panicked they might run out of sugar or mustard and have to *SHOCK HORROR* go without. They "stock up" for 4 days. At home.

But, I have to admit that this will be the year I desperately miss TOWER RECORDS... When I'd had enough Christmas Day, I could always count on them to be open, yup on Christmas-- to a like-minded (bored) bunch of folks like myself. It was a great way to spend the evening after the "big show" family time, or feed bag overload.

This year, Tower Records is defunct and in its place... A Container Store...:eyes:

Just what I want to do, ORGANIZE...LOL

of course I know that's not all the retailer's fault. In the late 90's you could pick up good used CDs at a store called Hastings for 5-8 bucks. I bought the hell out of CDs at those prices. Now used CDs go for 10-14. Screw that

52. i think to prevent the fighting in walmart and other stores from other years
they will give out tickets to people who are outside waiting in the line. the tickets will be for whatever item the people in the line want.

that way there is no rush to grab the products and people fighting over who got it first .

not exactly "reasonable" since it means as soon as sessert is wolfed down on Thursday you have to head for the store to wait on line to get that damn ticket.

As much as I could use a $200 Toshiba laptop, I think I'll pass.

20. This is really distressing to me, and
I don't even work in retail, or have a relative or friend who does (yet). Why can't these folks be allowed to take the damn holiday off to spend as they wish?

I don't, personally, plan to spend any time at a retail store from Thursday through Sunday. I'm not trying to sound uppity, but I think if maybe people didn't patronize the stores at those times, they'd get the hint and not be open then.

I really don't think my local grocers were open on Thanksgiving two years ago. I remember reading signs around the store saying "We'll be closed from 6 p.m. Wednesday to 7 a.m. Friday to allow our employees to spend the holiday with their families."

Not this year.

37. I used to work retail.
On my slide down the economic ladder. I think it was in 1999 we opened at 7 am on black friday. It was awful dealing with the early risers.

And then, there are the people who want to buy a silver bracelet at 6 pm on Xmas Eve (when the store closed) but their credit card won't go through due to some regional glitch, so you're in the store till seven pm and you're exhausted.

After I closed out on Xmas Eve, I put on my coat, got my bags, and barely had the strength to get to the bench between the two sets of doors going into the store, on my way out, so I could sit down and cry a while before I went to my car. I didn't care if any of the managers saw me either.

All I did Xmas day was sleep. I was so ashamed of the crap I had to sell. It was a leased department. (A different company from the dept. store.)

traffic jam on rural portion of interstate 79 at midnight Thanksgiving/Black Friday going to the freakin' Grove City Outlet mall. Nuckin Futs!

No way in hell will I even get near a mall for the weekend. In fact I haven't even been near an indoor mall in ages.

The only place I might go over the weekend is a B&N store that is not in a mall after the Black Friday traffic dies down.

If you're in Western PA stay away from I79 10-20 miles North or South from Grove City. They are doing Midnight Madness again this year.

Alternative Parking and Complimentary Shuttle Service for the Prime Outlets
Midnight Madness Sale will be provided beginning at 10:30 p.m. Thanksgiving
Night! Alternative parking will be provided at the Beloved Disciples Church as
well as the Grove City Alliance Church both located on route 208 in Grove City. A
Continuous Shuttle (Shaw Bus Line) will transport Midnight Madness shoppers to
and from Prime Outlets at Grove City. The Shuttle service will run a full 25 hours.

48. Guess what - some are opening at midnight
LANCASTER COUNTY, Pa. - While many people will be sleeping off their Thanksgiving meals Thursday night, thousands of shoppers will descend on Lincoln Highway East for early morning bargains — and hopefully not get caught in traffic.

Both Tanger and Rockvale outlets will open at midnight for the second consecutive year in what they are billing as "Midnight Madness Black Friday 2007."

"We're all trying to work together to do the job and make (Black Friday) a good experience," David Ober, general partner of Rockvale Outlets, said Monday.

Last year's retail experiment turned into a financial bonanza for the outlets, with many stores posting record Black Friday sales. But at the same time Route 30 was turned into a virtual parking lot with shoppers stranded on the road, unable to find places to park their vehicles.

50. Blecch!
Finished our shopping (such as it is) two months ago. The rest will be charity donations.

I remember when Tickle Me Elmo was the "must have" toy a few years back. Damned if I know who provided the official designation of Must Have Toy, but perhaps that's beside the point. What I do remember is an Elmo stampede in (I think) Canada in which one clerk ended up with a dislocated shoulder as the crowd literally trampled over his prone body in search of the elusive Elmo.

Can't wait for the casualty and fistfight reports to start coming in this year.

and I HATE HATE HATE shopping. But last year I discovered Black Friday for the first time. I got my husband 4 really really nice sweaters for $15.00 each, regularly $60.00 each. Being the extremely cheap person I am, I just can't pass up that kind of bargain. But shop all day going from store to store? I'd have to kill someone before the day was out.

70. I live two blocks from two shopping malls , a major innercity highway, and a Super WalMart
and a mile the other way from a SuperTarget and another shopping center. The only way I can get anywhere from now until January 1 will be to go south or pray.

I haven't gone Black Friday shopping in probably 20 years, and I don't miss it a bit. I hate the malls--they have nothing I want. I'd rather shop online--better selection, better prices, and I can do it in my jammies.

As for me, I'm stocked up for the weekend and don't plan on leaving my apartment until Monday. I have my computer, DVDs, books, satellite radio, my knitting and spinning, my doggie, and lots of stuff to cook and bake. The weather's gonna be crappy, the phone's off the hook, and I'm in heaven.

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone . . . .

I'm near a large mall that has stores that plan to open before Midnight...people on their way home from Thanksgiving Dinner can shop until they drop.

Considering the shit shape of this economy, the extra hours and sales sure can't hurt. This holiday season could be brutal as people have less money to spend (its all going in our gas tanks) and I fear that a good number of people who are working now will find themselves out of work after the first of the year.

64. I will NOT be shopping
I have never shopped the day after Thanksgiving. I am going to come in and work a half day getting my office organized a little while everyone ELSE is out shopping.

I truly despise the holiday shopping season.

I love the holidays, just hate shopping on a normal day. Massive crowds and traffic just really freak me out.

65. Black Friday is vastly overrated and not even a good sale
Years ago I learned this lesson when I went to the mall's toy store to buy a kids kitchen set at an ungodly hour in the morning and waited in line forever. Then, a couple weeks later I noticed the price had gone down even further! Well I returned it and got it at the cheaper price, but maybe I should wait till the day AFTER Christmas when whatever is left is really cheap.

66. As a mother...
and grandmother I used to enjoy shopping - as opposed to buying. There was a time when you could go out looking for items for later purchase. Having a day out, going to new stores and finding the off-beat, unusual, or just plain fun item was kinda nice. Then came the emphasis on consuming and being a consumer; which is by the way the reason for Black Friday. It has taken all the fun out of shopping and purchasing and turned it all into an exercise in stoicism and stamina. I don't do Black Friday shopping. I don't enjoy even necessary shopping anymore. Now I want to get in; get out; and go home. I do still look at catalogs but seldom purchase anything unless I am fairly certain the item, price and quality are really worth it.

67. I used to work with a lady
that took a day off every year for black friday even though the company mandated that the day off had to rotate between managers. I personally loathe and detest black friday-- the only pleasure I can get out of it is the videos of shoppers beating the shit out of each other to save money on a crappy product that was price-reduced because it was about to be thrown away.

68. I'm just glad I got a Wii last month
for some reason that console is in very short supply unlike the PS3 and Xbox 360. The $250 Wii is now averaging $400 - $500 on eBay and will probably go even higher in the next couple of weeks.
