UC Berkeley Law School to be renamed UC Berkeley School of Law ($25,000 consultant fee)
UC Berkeley dropping Boalt Hall from law school's official name
Tanya Schevitz, Chronicle Staff Writer

Officials at UC Berkeley's Boalt Hall School of Law spent nearly $25,000 on a branding consultant to help them give the school a new name:

"UC Berkeley School of Law."

Dean Christopher Edley Jr. said the money was well-spent because people will now understand that that the law school is tied to UC Berkeley...

3. Wow.
I'd have done that for half the price. :eyes:

Wonder how long it took to come up with that name?

5. This is the kind of stuff universities pay tons of money for.
And you can bet someone who worked on campus in their marketing department thought of it long ago...perhaps several someones.

However, coming from that person or persons, the idea was not valuable. It was only valuable after they paid thousands of dollars to an outside consultant to tell them it was a good idea. Then, suddenly, it was a must.

4. Asinine is as asinine does,
Only an idiot would counsel them to drop the Boalt name.

6. Lewis Black said his college was given a $20,000 grant
to determine why prisoners wanted to escape from prison...

"Don't you think any one of us could have figured it out for $500? 'Let's see, the rooms are small, the food's not that great -- and there's a guy named Bubba who wants to dance with me!'"

My favorite consultant story involves NBC, which in 1977 spent $1 million to have a new logo designed (replace the peacock? whose idea was that!) What they came up with was a square divided from the top left corner to the bottom right corner, with the upper triangle being solid red and the lower triangle being solid blue. They promoted the hell out of it -- on t.v., in print -- everything from letterheads to business cards to signage was changed to reflect the new, improved logo...

...which Nebraska Public Television had been using for six years. And it only cost them $20,000 for the design.

7. My old company payed more than that for a renaming of a software product
The final result? They added a single space between two words, i.e. from "SoftwareProduct" to "Software Product". I think that cost upwards of $30k.

8. I'm a Boalt alum and it will always be Boalt to me . . . . .
no one inside the legal profession seems to have trouble understanding where the school is located, and this change was completely unnecessary.

Having said that, this is probably the first thing Dean Edley's done that I disagree with. He's been a godsend for the school.

9. Back in the day Boalt Hall had a pretty prestigious rep.
I'm surprised they're dumping it. Has something changed?
