Why did the McClellan story come out now?
The book's not coming out for 5 months - there's no way it's just publishing pre-publicity.

I've been riddling over this all day, and can't come up with an answer. Why release this now? And who released it? The publisher?

1. The Bush admin may be trying to prevent publication,
perhaps claiming some national security violation.

Maybe they pissed off a publisher or agent enough that someone decided to leak a preview to the press. Or maybe it was a preemptive strike to get the most damaging info out there before such suppression could occur.

2. To keep his ass from 'accidentally' falling out of a window?
I've been wondering the same thing since I read the headlines earlier. Why now?

3. could be the publisher... then again it does seem very Rovian..
His SOP, after all was to put out some "juicy" and controversial nibblet, then by the time the wider story came out with more details, it was "yesterday's news."

This worries me... Of course there are other possibilities that we talk about on the Valerie Plame response thread, but....

5. Yeah....
I guess that's possible, but it's not the publisher's advantage to do that.

4. As far as I know, it was the publisher who released the clips.
Why now? I have no idea. I have to suspect someone is trying to influence the elections.

7. But if that's the motive
why now? The primaries are months away, and the GE is a year away.

And who does it benefit? Who does it hurt?

8. I would think it hurts McCain because he's the candidate most aligned with Shrub.
Old Freddie is siding pretty close to Shrub too, so it could hurt him too.

9. eehhh....
I don't think so. McCain might be aligned with Bush on policy, but none of the Republican candidates are close to this administration. It's clearly an assault on Bush and Cheney themselves, not their policies.

It just baffles me. I guess it DOES help them to get the story out early, but that's unsatisfactory, because the story came out!

6. On Olbermann it was discussed with John Dean. They wondered also.
Dean knows the publisher and claimed he almost called him. He also said the guy who released it said there's not much more, so I predict it's a tease with no substance. If Scotty was kept in the dark, what does he really know? Was what he said how he felt the Plame affair went down?

10. Good questions.
It doesn't strike me as plausible that the publisher would release it as a teaser 5 months before publication - that would just be dumb.

It's a head-scratcher.

17. What he knows is how he found out he was lying.
Why is he as sure he was lying now as he was sure he was telling the truth then?

12. Money. Always the money. Maybe the publisher might want to get it out
now to capitalize on the growing Impeachment sentiment?

15. Well
there's no real impeachment sentiment.

And how much money is there in doing this? If they're trying to sell books, why do it so far in advance of publication? That doesn't make sense.

16. perhaps...
but why so early?

Why put it out BEFORE the primaries, when the book's not coming out 'til April?
