Brailsford and 17 others — members of Veterans for Peace — were arrested on Veterans Day at City Hall Plaza and charged with disturbing a public assembly when they refused to vacate the staging area for the day’s ceremony.
While the arrest marked a first for Brailsford, a London native who captained a merchant ship in World War II, it came in stride for the longtime Ipswich resident.
“I guess I became an activist right after I came ashore ,” said Brailsford, who estimates he has spent 18 years of his life on the water. “We wanted to have a peaceful coexistence then. I’m working in that direction all the time.”
In addition to running the Samantha Smith chapter of the Veterans For Peace from his Ipswich home lined with pictures and paintings of boats, Brailsford, who married in Boston after the war, adds to his tally at sea with bi-weekly sailing trips off Manchester each summer.
