Loyalties in Border War sometimes cross the line to extreme
Circuit Judge Owens Hull has a unique perspective on Saturday’s epic Missouri-Kansas football game in Kansas City. That is, if you can call his, um, one-sided stance unique.

The 64-year-old lifelong Missourian wants KU not just to lose, but to be humiliated. To be routed. To be burned to the ground, if you will.

Seriously.

<skip>

Hull leans back in his chair and looks at the rendering on his wall of Lawrence burning. He laughs, then says with some shock, “You know, some people celebrate the day.”

“Attorneys will come in here for conferences, and a lot of them know about that print,” he says.

“Sometimes we get them (KU grads) in here, too. So the other attorneys will say, ‘Check out the judge’s painting. Read the plaque.’

“So they’ll lean in really close, because it’s really hard to read.”

Mizzou 183, Kansas 0. As in people killed.

http://www.kansascity.com/751/story/365953.html

Some historical background: In the years leading up to the Civil War, Missouri was a slave state and Kansas was free. Vigilantes rode from MO into KS and kidnapped slaves and abolitionists and brought them over to MO and executed many of them. There were also vigilante abolitionists, like John Brown. These border wars started over 150 years ago and now they fight over sports. This judge in MO celebrates the history with this painting in his office.

I so want to go away this weekend. Or maybe I should stand in the street with a sign:
IT'S JUST A FOOTBALL GAME, PEOPLE!!

1. Football is a little mini-war in its own right. Just not played with
ammo.

28. You're right on that one.
As a history nut, I love football. It is simply Napoleonic warfare without the casualties. Compare any play chart with those maps of Napoleonic, or even Civil War battle fields and you'll see what I mean.

4. What a pussy!
I am sure you can find some old civil war weapons over there in your confederate state. And a Dixie flag too. It's time you replaced that Irish flag anyway. :)

5. That flag is still in great shape.
It's only a couple years old. I had to replace the one some Jayhawker bastard stole.
We did dig up an old toy cap pistol in the yard, though.

Glad to see you are on my side. :)

I like evl but consider him a misguided soul. Maybe we should conduct a flag raid on his turf. Especially if all he has to defend his castle is a toy gun. LOL

13. I'm trying to stay out of it this week...
Half my family lives in Missouri, half in Kansas. My nephew is a junior at Mizzou, and since his mother is paying the freight she's gone over to the dark side. Everyone else went to KSU and - traitors! - are rooting for Mizzou. I'm the only neutral one - I went to UCI - but I'm stickin' up for my state. And that little Jayhawk is cute.

19. In my family, we fight more with the Wildcat fans
We all went to KU and all my cousins went to KState. Funny story - my cousin had a family 4th of July picnic several years ago and my sister was 8 months pregnant. We were sitting in my cousin's backyard and my sister asked to use the bathroom. My cousin told her to just go in through the garage and use the bathroom in her family room just off the garage instead of going up the steps to the first floor. So my sister went into the garage and about 30 seconds later, we heard this scream. I thought my sister had gone into labor. We all went running into the house and my sister was standing in my cousin's bathroom, which was all decked out in KState purple. The wallpaper, the towels, even the toilet seat screamed purple wildcats. My sister was screaming that as a Jayhawker, she absolutely would NOT pee in a KState bathroom.

29. the KSU-KU rivalry is fun
My late sister graduated from KSU and her husband from KU. Things got really animated during basketball season. She'd find things like a Jayhawk keychain in her underwear drawer and he'd find a Wildcat bumper sticker on his car, usually after he'd driven around with it for weeks. They had a good time with it.

14. Time for a history lesson
The term "Jayhawk" was probably coined about 1848. Accounts of its use appeared from Illinois to Texas. The name combines two birds-the blue jay, a noisy, quarrelsome thing known to rob nests, and the sparrow hawk, a stealthy hunter. The message here: Do not turn your back on this bird.

<skip>

Henry Maloy, a cartoonist for the student newspaper, drew a memorable version of the Jayhawk (top left) in 1912. He gave it shoes. Why? For kicking opponents, of course.

6. Well, the judge is going a bit too far on this,
But overall, I think that the MU-KU rivalry is a good thing. It always makes the games a bit more fun, and now that something major, like a berth for the national championship game is on the line, it makes it all that much more entertaining. Frankly I find it more than amusing that the sports media establishment is having to make a major pilgrimage out here to the Midwest. They're all so dumbfounded that a couple of schools from the Big XII that aren't in OK or NE are in contention, they're befuddled and left at a loss for words.

It should be a great game, but you know what? MU is going to win this game;)

M-I-Z Z-O-U!

PS, we're going to kick Kansas ass in basketball too this year:evilgrin:

22. I'm actually starting to feel a little sorry for Nebraska this year
Even though they brought it on themselves. First was the stupid idea of getting rid of Frank Solitch after a 9-3 year with a bowl birth. I understand wanting to aim high, but you don't cut your own throat doing it. Then that problem was compounded by bringing in Callahan, a passing offense proponent, in to a team that has always been, and is built for a the solid ground game. That just wasn't going to work out. I imagine that Callahan will be gone after this season, but that's still going to mean at least two more years of rebuilding and bad Nebraska football. Now that MU and KU are rising, the recruits in those states are staying home rather than going to NE, so that leaves NE screwed since they are a small state. Hate to say it, but Nebraska might have to resign itself to being a mid level football power for awhile. We'll see, I might be wrong, but that hotshot quarterback from Parkway West who rethought his NE commitment is not a good sign.

Thanks for the vote of confidence. Either way, it's going to be a good game.

34. It's funny...
...during all the years of dominance, I loved having other teams hate us. But the pity...ouch! ;)

You're absolutely right. Getting rid of Solitch so quickly was a bit much, but running to Callahan to save everything was an absolute nightmare. He and Cosgrove HAVE to be done at the end of this year, I don't care what it costs. And then...yep...rebuilding for a decade. If not longer.

New coach. Just getting off the bad list for breaking the rules. It's bound to be a rebuilding year for Mizzou. KU is already ranked in the top ten.

Besides, yellow and black are such ugly colors. :)

17. Hell, KU can't keep up with MU
Anderson's game plan is in the model of Nolan Richardson's "60 minutes of hell" Your big guys will be calling for the O2 tank before half time. Run on offense, run on defense, run all the time.

And speaking of ugly color schemes, red and blue:evilgrin: Puhleeeze!

We could keep this up all day, and it would be fun. You have a great Thanksgiving, and a great time with the football game this weekend, even if you avoid it(I understand, big games are always nightmares):hi:

They're so rare over there. Miles and miles of prarie. Here in Missouri we've got hills and valleys, you know, real landscape;)

But yeah, I do have to wonder about some of my fellow Missourians, especially those who live in Southern Missouri. You couldn't pay me enough to live in southern Missouri, though it's great to visit for the scenery.

Talk about insane fans:crazy:

Though not so much lately. I hate to say this, but Oakland just isn't going to be a real power again until Al Davis either passes on or gets out of the way. He meddles too much in the team, and lately that hasn't been a good thing. The only good thing about that is Oakland is making my KC Chiefs lood good by comparison:evilgrin:

Loyalty and bravery are good things! I *despise* the Raiders when they're good, but lately, especially last year, I was feeling sorry for them. It's just no fun anymore, not that the Chiefs are that much better. We're going through a rebuild, but it seems as though the Raiders have been rebuilding ever since they went to the Super Bowl.
