"ID cards that exclude gender" in San Francisco - high time...
USA Today:
"Next year, San Francisco will issue municipal identification cards showing the usual name, birthdate and photo.
What the card won't include: gender.
...
"The card really makes gender a non-issue," says Kristina Wertz, legal director of the Transgender Law Center in San Francisco.
Wertz says legally changing a name and gender designation can be time-consuming and cost hundreds of dollars. IDs that don't match appearance could "out" people and make them vulnerable to discrimination or abuse, she says."

USA Today

it was high time, in my opinion. no gender id in italy too. no fingerprint. and, hopefully, no dna files for the citizenship and for the immigrants.
i don't want to step back to the 30's before i get old.

1. Gender is one of the major
identifiers for people....what good is the card if it can't be used to identify the holder?

2. You don't think a photo is enough to identify someone?

4. They should take the photos off, too
Too much chance for it to be used in a discriminatory manner.

5. The name could be used in a discriminatory manner too
as could the address and date of birth.

But I think the picture is probably more useful than the word "male" or "female" as far as identifying someone.

3. Unreliable identifier
Gender as a category is often an unreliable identifier. I see dozens of people walking down the street every day who can't be easily and quickly shoved into one of the two little gender boxes. What good is identifying someone as Boy, Or Else Girl if those categories come loaded with expectations as to the appearance of the person which turn out not to fit the person at all?

The cards have pictures. That's a much more reliable identifier than the letters M or F.

6. Why is that?
Do police now ask people to strip in order to verify their ID?

15. Well it is pretty technical.
Seems we can't ask about name, age, height, weight, race/complexion, DOB. It is just to politically incorrest and intrusive. So, lets just issue a laminated blank business card embossed with a seal and call it a ID. Hell you could go to Kinkos and issue it to yourself.

19. Boo Hoo
I take gender rights seriously.

If you don't understand the issue --why are you even commenting on it?

8. Its sex not gender
Just had to point out a huge pet peeve of mine. What everyone here is referring to is biological sex not gender. Sex - male/female/0 - gender = how you act according to your sex.

My pet peeve too.

Edit to add:

Gender is a construct.

Sex is biological.

When I fill out applications when it ask for "gender" I write "none of the above" and explain to the person I give it back to that they have a typo ;)

14. What if someone has to be thrown in prison?
Which one do they go to? This is over the top. But changing paper work shouldn't cost anymore than what it takes to cover costs.

Maybe we should just put a bar code on the forearm.

Otherwise rape is almost sure to follow.

Clarification: of the gender-variant person, I've never heard of the other way 'round, though I don't think anything surprises me anymore.

20. Why is a city issuing ID cards at all?
I find that rather bizarre, and a touch Orwellian. What, a driver's license, state ID, SS card, possibly a passport not good enough? Is this mandatory, that a citizen must have a municipal ID card to live in a city? And this is going on in San Fran of all places? Wow:wow:
