1. Is that place a real university?
It seems even hokier that Falwell U and it sure appears to be sloppily run.

5. Oh it's a "real" university, all right.
What sort of curriculum they have and how respected they are as a school, I have no idea.

But you should SEE the place!

Most folks not from here who have any image in their mind at all when they think of ORU think of those enormous "praying hands" that don't really look like praying hands at all to me -- I've called them the "clapping" hands ever since they went on display!

But long before that, in my early years in Tulsa after I first moved here in 1973, I used to ride my bicycle out on that end of town. Back then the campus was not really even IN town but rather pretty far into the outskirts. The road to it was two-lane and paved, but not heavily traveled, and the area was pretty good for biking -- nice and flat for some miles.

The first time my friend and I rode past the campus, I was just flabbergasted. I mean, the buildings are like something from a sci-fi space museum or something, only a lot more lavish with lots of gold all over them and such. You can tell they've had a LOT of money to work with over the years, building that place up. (Money from people like my grandmother!)

It's a pretty big campus, too. Big, gawdy buildings that just make me sick to view. I call it "Oral in Wonderland."

And now that part of town has been built up a lot because it's the "rich" side of town, too. Another "spawn" or Oral, named Billy Joe Daugherty (who was appointed to take over Richard's post for now) has a huge church of his own across the street, "Victory Christian Center." So that whole end of town is, like, "contaminated"!

Blech...... what a disgrace!

3. I'm lovin' this.
What has surprised me is just how much distaste for Oral's son is coming out all around Tulsa these days. It's like, now that someone finally has something solid to charge him with, all those who previously kept kinda quiet about how much they hate him have come out of the woodwork expressing their views openly.

That "ministry" and that campus has been a huge eyesore and bane, an embarrassment and a boil on the butt of this town for way too damn long, and I'm glad to finally see the Roberts' family getting at least a little bit of what they deserve!

If Richard is really on God's good side, maybe a 900-foot-tall Jesus will come visit him like in his dad's story, eh? :puke:

Go get 'em, I say! They have earned our contempt and have probably committed plenty of crimes along the way -- beyond the moral ones, I mean.

(My grandmother, living on a tiny Social Security check, used to watch Oral on tv and send him money she couldn't spare, and it really pissed me off that she could never see through his act.)

7. You might know I grew up 2 blocks from Oral's first house at 37th & Birmingham
and was good friends with his oldest son Ronnie...we went to Edison together and I was at his house from time to time.
We fell out of touch after graduation and I felt really bad when he committed suicide. I can't prove it but I feel that his daddy Oral's shenanigans contributed to that. My crazy old Aunt in Illinois used to send the bastards money...she finally got to where she wouldn't speak to me as I kept trying to explain to her what a bunch of criminal bastards that gang was and is. I guess she's dead now.
:grr:

9. Wow, interesting.
I always thought that about his son who committed suicide too!

And I finally had to stop criticizing Oral to my grandmother because it was starting to cause hard feelings between us. I just hated it that nothing I said could stop her sending him her $5 out of every damn check she got when it meant she had to skip buying something to eat! She and I were really close -- I mean really close.

And when I thought about the many millions of people, lots of them just like her and your aunt, who did the same thing, it just boiled my blood. Still does.

I have always figured that people like the Roberts family surely must not even believe in God at all, because if they did, they'd KNOW they would face a hellish fate eventually after all the wickedness they perpetrated....
