U.K prime minister apologises for careless data handling

Prime Minister Gordon Brown of the U.K has apologised in the House of Commons, to 25 million Britons for the loss of their personal information.

The tax and banking data went astray when two computer discs, containing information on families who receive a government financial benefit, were lost in the mail last October.

Analysts say the breach is significant inasmuch as the information, containing names, addresses and national insurance numbers, could be used to access personal accounts.

The data disks also included the names of every child under 16 in Britain.
