Anyone notice the NY Times' delivery of GAP brochure today --- ????
Of course, I noticed it immediately as I picked up the newspaper ---
my husband said he had it in the car and he had to turn it over ---

It's a GAP brochure . . . . with a young girl in a very suggestive pose ---
sitting akimbo ---

She LOOKS very young which means this not only borders on porn --- but child porn ---

Notice . . . while this is a GAP brochure . . . it is set up and featured and delivered by the NY Times in a manner which ensures that it will be widely seen.

Anyone else see it --- ???

1. I haven't seen it, but GAP doesn't have a history of putting out "pornographic" ads

This place has gone down the rabbit hole today.

And prudes did get their way with the catalog.

11. Sometimes when we travel in Europe, we are totally startled by the suggestive nature of their ads.
Edited on Wed Nov-21-07 10:53 PM by Audio_Al
We figure that is our American bias, because the Europeans don't bat an eyelash! But too far is too far.

Are you old enough to remember the "Nothing Comes between Me and My Calvin Kleins" print ad campaign? That was considered really "out there..."

Brooke Shields, who is now a MOMMY!

3. I have seen the A&F and The United Colors of Benetton ads defended before here.
Good luck with your opinion. I agree with you, the sexualization of girls is definitely a slippery slope that should not be approached.

29. YES ---THAT'S THE ONE . . . HOWEVER . . .
the PRINT shown at the crotch area isn't in the ad ---

Plus if you hit it, it enlarges but still way smaller than the actual ad --

And, yes, the issue is the youth ---

She could be very young ---

We've seen this before with tobacco ads -- using older but YOUNG looking models ---
chewing bubble gum, etal ---

Again -- if it were an adult model . . . maybe I'd say "erotic" ---

This, to me, is suggesting porn --- and child porn --

10. Please do not buy from GAP, Old Navy or Banana Republic.

The Fisher family, who owns those chains is an evil family, who deal with sweatshops, as well as own lumber companies that clearcut old growth forests.

25. I totally agree. We go to those places when we travel all over the world.
We also go to consignment stores which are locally owned. There is one hospital affiliated shop we use here in Portland, but I can't recall the name.

You'd be amazed the things we are able to reuse and recycle. We've been doing it for years through rummage and yard sales run by charities and "just folks".

Thanks for your comment.

19. My husband noticed it first
And I gave him a good talking to for gawking over a girl so young. He asked if I really thought she was that young. I'm really concerned: he's either incredibly dumb or a pedophile.

By way of explanation: his reading glasses were off, and he can't really see that well without them.

I might have become excited forty or so years ago, but I had trial taxes to do today, and that turned out to be exciting enough for this 73 year old fellow!

and he did --- and it kinda of made me understand even more how blatant this thing is ---

cause . . . I don't think he pays that much attention to this stuff --- I'll see it.

But this thing was right there --- featured BY the NY Times . . . presented ---

and, obviously, it made him uncomfortable ---

37. My wife doesn't have to worry. These are the things I consider HOT for the holidays...
<<<<looking for Radio Shack, CompUSA, Best Buy, Staples, Home Depot, Lowe's on line catalog links>>>

I just got a special package from this company:

(Undefined Name) Audio Components Warehouse in New Jersey

At my age, some things that used to be really important, just aren't anymore. It's called growing up and having to deal with the inevitability of loss in many areas.

But then I've never made my wife jealous because I just am a simple fool who believes that when you say FOREVER and ALWAYS, that's what it means. NOW, she looks at other women and men (usually comments on the beautiful ones) and perhaps that's because she spent a long time in sales, marketing, advertising, TV and radio. I didn't.

Respectfully,

Audio Al, your Radio Pal

The pose wouldn't bother me in the least if she didn't have the neckline up around her face. I think it's more suggestive than it needs to be.

39. fact check ...
Child exploitation is criminal. BUT, the picture appears in the womens section. So unless the GAP are deliberately pulling some marketing shenanigans, is there really any reason to believe that the model is not a young adult woman? Some say she looks 13 some say 20. Perhaps a polite letter to the NYT or better yet, the GAP's ad agency, asking them to check age of said model, will clear up this matter pronto.
