Poll finds the mood in US growing darker
Poll finds the mood in US growing darker
Key concerns are economy, security
Reuters / November 22, 2007

WASHINGTON - Americans enter the holiday season in a dark mood, with economic worries, security fears, and a lack of confidence in government fueling growing pessimism, according to a Reuters/Zogby poll released yesterday.

The Reuters/Zogby Index, which measures the mood of the country, fell for the third consecutive month, dropping from 96 in October to 94.9 on new growth in the number of Americans dissatisfied with the economy and pessimistic about the future.

President Bush rebounded slightly from last month's record low, with the number of Americans who give him positive marks climbing to 28 percent from 24 percent.

But Congress remained stuck with a dismal positive rating of 11 percent, tying its record low.

"For the third straight month, Americans have a sense that things are not getting better, they are getting worse," pollster John Zogby said.

Rising gasoline prices, a mortgage loan crisis, and talk of a recession spooked the markets and hurt American confidence in the economy, he said, while concerns linger about a potential conflict with Iran, unrest in Pakistan, and the Iraq war.

1. Part of this is because the media will never report anything good about the Democrats.
Edited on Thu Nov-22-07 07:41 AM by Perry Logan
Things are getting better, but the corporate media would never report anything that would make the Democrats look good. In a very real sense, the corporate media are bumming everyone out.

For example, approval ratings for the Democrats in Congress are nowhere near as bad as those for the Republicans. But this fact is omitted in mainstream news reports, because it's somewhat favorable to the Dems:

"When respondents were polled on congressional Democrats and Republicans separately, congressional Republicans received a 34-percent approval and a 64-percent disapproval rating, while congressional Democrats received an approval rating of 46 percent and a disapproval rating of 51 percent."

Here are a few things that are getting better. This sort of stuff will never be emphasized in the mainstream news:

Countless investigations going on. Healthcare is on the table. The internet is safe for now. Our wounded vets are no longer lying around in their own urine. The Senate Ethics Committee is back in action. Many 9/11 Commission recommendations are being passed. A bill to increase financial aid for colleges has passed--the single largest increase in college aid since the GI bill. The President's signing statements are being investigated. Legislation to restore habeus corpus has been approved. The Senate Armed Services Committee has passed legislation "that would grant new rights to terror suspects held at Guantanamo Bay. The unions have a voice in the government now—as do gays, women, and minorities. The environment has a fighting chance. The House passed the Taxpayer Protection Act, to protect taxpayers against "identity theft, deceptive Web sites and loan sharks." It also makes it "easier for taxpayers to retrieve property lost as a result of a wrongful Internal Revenue Service levy and directs the IRS to notify lower-income people that they qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit." The House approved a bill spending $1.7 billion over five years for cleaner water. There's a new House committee devoted solely to addressing the issue of global warming.

2. "We are sick and tired of being lied to by corrupt republicons." - American patriots
Edited on Thu Nov-22-07 07:48 AM by SpiralHawk
"Republicons have stolen our government, trashed our democracy, squandered our tax dollars, enriched their corrupt fatcat cronies with no-bid contracts, engaged in deviant sex while lecturing us on 'family values,' lied us into a phony war that is really about Oil Profits for the rich, failed us time and time again on matters of National Security like 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina, and then acted smug and instead of accepting responsibility for their failures they have blamed everything on The Clenis. Meanwhile, the Democratic 'Leadership' has totally bent over and Assumed the Position. No wonder we feel gloomy."

5. Progressive changes needed....
Edited on Thu Nov-22-07 08:59 AM by mac2
Who are the true Progressives?

Definition of progressivism:

“Noun: progressivism
1.. The political orientation of those who favor progress toward better conditions in government and society”.

We need progressives in a time of corruption, huge national debt, war, and removal of our democracy just like the previous one at the beginning of the last century. How do we define who these progressives are? I decided this list may identify those who may be of help in the Progressive movement of this century.

This list is long because we have more problems that need solutions than any time in our previous history which could destroy us and even others in the world. I'm sure others could add more to the list with more literary talent and knowledge. I as a citizen of this country who is in great need of solutions had to try my best.

We still don't have successful progressive political organizations who are fighting for democracy because they support candidates who aren't really Progressives.

The only true progressives are…

-Those who voted against the illegal wars (demanding proof of who was responsible and proof of WMD). Stating Congress (who represent the people who pay for it and send their children to die) declare war not the President according to the Constitution and separation of powers.

-Those who believe the WTO and treaties (also G8, Bilderburg, etc. http://www.americanfreepress.net/html/bilderberg_to_meet_in_canada.html ) are illegal because the people can not control their own trade agreements, borders, financial systems, or government agenda. How dare the few who meet as representatives of our country and divide up the world economies, trade, banking, etc. It is also unconstitutional (and treason) since the treaties and the world unions set up have not been approved or ratified by the people.

There have even been heavy fines by the WTO against our country. They too are illegal since the organization has no authority under our laws to do so. We never win any of the suits to favor us. It seems the WTO is set to rape us for European domination of the world market, steal our wealth in their banks, move our corporations there, and plundering of our Common Wealth and technology. It is not world at all...or fair to us. Any trade representative or leader who thinks this is a good deal for America is lying to us. The Constitution is negated without approval or ratification by the WTO, NAFTA, CAFTA, etc.

Congress (who have to answer to the people) controls trade agreements and the purse (which includes banking, financial institutions, including the stock market). They illegally gave this power to the President who does as he pleases. Trade representatives (many times representing corporations. banks, and the wealthy elite) meet in secret without our knowledge to determine our future.

It is illegal and unconstitutional as well as very dangerous. It would lead to Fascism. It is not a government of "We the people" but of we the wealthy and powerful few (who don't always do what is good for the country or world). Too much power in the hands of the few is never a good idea for a democracy.

-Those who think the only way for a democracy to exist is with a free, equal, and open society. No secret government should exist. As Powell's son (whose father was shot down over Russia in a U2 spy jet) says, most our enemies know our secrets and technology before we the citizens. Nothing is secret in the world to those who want to know. Secrets are usually to keep the people in the dark for power.

FEMA which is a government agency has taken too much power into the hands of the few. Many governors know more about their state needs and people than the Feds who arrive only at a disaster or emergency. There is succession process for leaders if a state loses them. The Federal government doesn't need it except for President and agency heads (to be approved by Congress later on). The government and Constitution with the Bill of Rights should never be postponed or negated. That would be tyranny and treason from within.

FEMA is refusing to allow the RV Katrina owners free speech is just plain lawlessness and not democratic. How dare they do that to citizens who pay for their jobs. FEMA is almost dangerous in a time of disaster keeping help and information out. They caused fear instead of hope.

-Those who did not give the President Constitutional powers not theirs to give away (without ratification of the Constitution by the people).

-Those who believe in the separation of power as written in the Constitution. The President and his Executive branch do not make laws, refuse to allow his cabinet to testify before Congress nor control and stop their over sight, do trade agreements, declare war, make policy, nor dip into the treasury, re-organize government, etc. as they please. The VP does not do military exercises endangering the country by leaving it defenseless. This administration and its agencies are lawless and not accountable to the people who pay for it.

-Those who voted against the Patriot Acts since they are unconstitutional and a violation of the very fabric of our democratic society. Violations are not acceptable regardless of the excuse of what past Presidents did in time of war. We have new laws and protections to do what we need to protect our rights and go after the lawless. FISA is a protection that they have ignored. They should go to jail for treason and political fraud. We the citizens need protection from government tyranny so we have laws that do just that.

In a democracy, it is "We the people" who limit the power and duties of government in the Constitution and Bill of Rights. Government is for us to function as a society not for the powerful few to limit and control us. People left Europe because of that all powerful control over their lives by the elite few.

-Those who disapprove of moving the boxes of government agencies\legislation\regulations around just to avoid blame for 911, Katrina, etc. failures. It was costly and even more inefficient...even corrupted with private contractors, etc. We lost many well trained government employees and generals, etc. who made our country function.

Civil Service and many agency regulations and procedures was thrown to the way side after many administrations (bipartisan) approval. It insured we have qualified as well as career government workers. We never voted or approved a mandate to do so.

Accountability should be demanded of all government agency heads. Brownie and Chernoff should have gone to jail for genocide and destruction for their actions during Katrina. Katrina criminal action and crimes were not investigated properly (the levees bombed, help turned away and even prevented, lies and fear messages send on purpose to the people, etc.).

-Those who protested the stolen elections which were full of fraud, discrimination, and tyranny. We should demand accountability for them breaking the Voter Rights Acts, etc. By law the party in the state where the frequent voting fraud and abuse is common lose their Congressional seats in Congress. Without this punishment we can't have fair elections.

-Those who don't pillage the public treasury for their own family, friends, and party. They should return fraud the funds to the people.

Example: Rep. Hastert made a fortune on land in IL which he and friends purchased. He then pushed for a road to go through that land. Or Cheney's wealth from Halliburton no bid contract and theft in Iraq, Katrina, etc. Tom Ridge told people to use duct tape against bio-terrorism and caused many citizens great fear (not to mention city and state cost to protect against a terrorist attack). He is now on the board of Home Depot because he made them a fortune. John Ashcroft also moved into a good arms job for his false terrorist information and warning. This Executive branch has stolen lots of tax payer dollars, etc.(Rumsfeld,etc.).

They are like a gang who move in and out of government taking huge funds with them and getting powerful jobs because of their corruption to profit corporations. They should be tried under RICO and put out of office for fraud and treason (in time of so called war and terrorism).

They don't care about their country or its future. The country that gave them so much freedom, education, and public trust. Does power and arrogance really corrupt them? Yes..they should go to jail if there is any justice.

-Those who don't remain silent over the theft of our treasury and fraud for such things as military corporate theft, illegal wars rebuilding funds lost, and religious profiteering.

-Those who think that a balanced federal budget and a surplus is good business for us and keeps us secure from our enemies.

-Those who are trying to get rid of the computers that were rigged and manipulated. Stating only a paper ballot and open counting of votes can be trusted until technology proves reliable. Independent exit polls and standards are must to insure the vote has not been tempered with by officials, etc. If we can’t trust our vote than we don’t pick our own representatives and we don’t have a democracy do we?

-Those who demand equal time on media free for all candidates running for public office. Stating, the airways belong to us and media corporations profit off of it. They should pay back to our democracy.

-Those who would protect and monitor our food, air, plants, and water supplies from importation contamination, bugs, and diseases. We could lose whole farming industries not to mention forests, etc.

-Those who believe not in "smaller government" but non-corrupted one. In our modern society we need large government agency controls and protection of our food, drugs, transportation, etc. It can not be negated for tax cuts to the already rich few, made smaller, or under funded to prevent over sight.

-Those who believe we should grow and raise our own food for our own population not ruin our environment for the world's food supply (actually by International corporations who don't care about us).

-Those who believe all International corporations should be held accountable with charters and regulations to do business in our country. If they are criminal, their leaders are banned, fined,or jailed. A corporation is not above the law or entitled to special treatment because of their power and wealth (more than humans). Read Unequal Powers by Thom Hartmann.

-Those who believe in medical and drug advancement but remove harmful drugs, etc. from the market. Not to be used for political or their own self interest profit reasons.

-Those who will support destruction (in a safe manner) and all government funding of biological weapons. They could destroy us all in the end. They are used against innocents in war time which is a violation of International law. They could be used (and were during the anti-war, etc. protests in NY City) against us for tyranny by government.

-Those who support peace and prosperity for all. Our powerful weapons and aggressive Empire building can only destroy us in the end. Humans might not survive. Who cares who is right?

-Those who oppose the stealing of American technology and markets by greedy CEOs (who are temporary employees in most cases) who take their corporations lock stock and barrel overseas for their own profit. These companies belong to American workers/managers/shareholders past and present. Under their corporate charters they don't have a right to steal the markets, technology, business knowledge, etc. They aren't doing what is good for the community (US, state, or local economy and workers). Much of it is patent theft. CEO huge windfall of funds, pensions, life time bonus, etc. is definitely fraud. At the same time, they deny their employees benefits and pay increases. Congress covers the deed for their own campaign contributions. They are not enforcing the Corporate Responsibility Act to protect the corporations and the community survival. Nor to keep them here in America.

Exporting America by Lou Dobbs lists the large American companies who have moved off-shore taking everything with them. American workers were even asked to train them (educated them in skills) while losing their own jobs. Shouldn't we jail/sue these CEOs/board members for their theft? Demand they return or pay for the loss of technology, markets, business knowledge, income, patents (American patents for equipment, etc.), and taxes to us? Silent Theft is also a good book to read on the subject of privatization and globalization. It is treason since it weakened our once self sufficiency and strong society.

We are becoming third world while others drain and feed off us. We export our resources and import our needs. International oil companies pollute our environment and don't pay royalties. We are to be mercenaries for other countries and corporations. Our young need jobs and education and not forced into the military to survive or support their families.

-Those who protect our society (elections, banking, etc.) and business from foreign intervention and agenda.

-Those who would protect our voting system against fraud and abuse (such as by computer voting machines owned by one party interests). Media companies should not count the vote or reveal the numbers. Nor are they allowed to stop a recount with their constant harassment. They should remain a good distance from the area as required by law. Media owners sometimes have self interest in the winner. Counting of votes should be public and exit polls used to prevent fraud, etc. No candidate should be given the election until all votes are counted (or recounted as by law). The Supreme Court can to stop and election or determine a winner by their actions. It violates the separation of power for states to control their own elections.

-Those who would protect the right of all Americans to elect their own representatives as declared in the Constitution regardless of their felony, etc. If they don't vote or decide on our goals as a country, they won't feel part of the society or fight to protect it against enemies.

-Those who feel X-government leaders and employees (or those in power now) have no right to determine public policy or agenda by using private organizations and boards (PNAC, Trilateral Commission, Pentagon advisory board, Bilderburg group meeting, G8, Heritage group, religious leaders and their organizations, etc.). Many of the elite few aren't elected or now accountable to the people to make those decisions and may even be traitors...opportunists.

-Those who would fight to get all citizens education, jobs, health care, and shelter.

-Those who would protect all American rights to succeed in the work force regardless of sex, race, religion, etc.

-Those who believe in research and development government funding should support an agreement by those corporations/private companies/countries who use it. Right now all that is free and public information even to foreign and international companies. We can use that money to do more of it. Example: the Internet, modern drugs, medical procedures, technology, studies from public universities, etc.

-Those who fight to stop the pillaging of our environment for profit. We pay more in the end. They should care about the future and the planet.

-Those who keep the promise of protecting our most loved historical places and parks for future generations. Stating they belong to us and are not for sale by any party, governor, president, etc. They are not for sale to private companies for profit resorts...building projects. They are to be protected not pillaged by the few for their own self interest.

-Those who think all Americans and corporations should share the tax burden equally not just the middle class. No profits should go off shore to British banks. Nor the British off-shore banks allowed to hide criminal profits and money launder for criminal Americans. We the American consumers\workers\shareholders made our corporations successful. They profit off us being the largest market in the world so we should demand they contribute jobs and funds, obey our laws, etc. They should pay us back for the use of our public assets (roads, airports, education, health protection, police, etc.) and government, etc. If not we can not function. It is a society obligation to continue democracy where they can prosper and do business freely.

-Those who think workers should be allowed a voice and safe work environment with a piece of the profits for their old age, health, etc. Stating, workers and shareholders in American corporations should have a voice in their leadership and policy.

-Those who think government and religion should be separate to insure democracy and freedom. Religious organizations have violated their democratic contact to be separate from government. They are not good citizens. They have tax exemption but want tax payer dollars and the ability to run their own political candidates for public office. This would be a disaster since they would want to determine government policy and agenda. Citizens not of their religious group should not be asked to support or be controlled by them. It is religious control by the most powerful and wealthy groups...leaving and destroying the minority groups. It is religious tyranny and would lead to religious wars. We would not have a democracy but a theocracy. There would be no freedom of religion.

Faith Based Charity is\was in the past a failure and corrupt. It threatens our democracy with this new wealth and power. Congress has not passed funds for them so it is illegal. It is a "hidden federal religious tax" for the few who support a one party political agenda (religious pork also). They don't have the knowledge, skills, and ability to help the most needy in our society. They the most helpless in our society are suffering. Government does it best and cheaper. There is accountability under government over sight.

-Those who think we should respect other foreign countries rulers, territory, religion, and resources. We should also protect our own. War of aggression are illegal nationally and internationally.

-Those who will not take sides or fund another countries disputes and "perceived" enemies in the peril of our own...such as Israel against the world.

-Those who think the governments de-regulation of banking and financial institutions has resulted in more fraud and failures. Bankers take huge funds and pensions for themselves. They hide and manipulate funds that don't even exist for criminality. Politicians and countries money launder through the banks with little regard for our regulations. The Riggs Bank in DC allowed Senator Dole to remove thousands of dollars in cash. This money could have been handed out to buy votes on the Senate floor and cloak room. They also handled foreign Arab money which was unlawful. Regulations prevented that until the early 80s when Reagan de-regulated. We should bring back those safety nets and make sure our national banks are used for our purpose not international ones in London who many not care about investing in our country.

Our money may even be used against us or to oppress/kill others (military and weapons). Would Germany and the US been at war for so long if the international banks hadn't loaned them money? Germany was broke after the first world war. Bankers and the military complex industry profit in war time...everyone else loses. GE President during WWII announced he hoped the war would last forever because his business had never been more profitable (from People's History of the United States from 1492 to Present by Howard Zinn). Its obvious he had self motivation regarding the war.

The request of the administration to be able to shift banking money and funds around without a trace or over sight is troubling. They could move drug and weapons profits around to benefit themselves. Having access to citizen banking account information is also very dangerous. It could be/and will be, judging from the communication spying on citizens, abused politically. Communist and the World Bankers took citizen bank accounts to pay for war and debt in the past. If terrorism or criminality is suspected they should get FISA court permission and a warrant.

-Those who think our free speech, journalism, and media should be more free and diverse without corporate and government control (by the party in control).

-Those who think government agency heads and corporate/financial leaders should be held accountable for criminal activity not just lose their jobs or retire (on the worker\shareholder\corporate or public dole).

-Those who think basic human rights should be allowed all humans...including our "so called" enemies. Stating, they should be allowed a trial with legal representation and not kept in jail for long periods of time without cause or trial.

-Those who feel citizens have a right to their medical and personal privacy information. It is not for sale by government, party membership, doctors, hospitals, insurance companies, communication companies, etc. for profit or policing.

-Those who disapprove of citizen monitoring chips for profit or government control.

-Those who feel government should not force vaccines or drugs (some with contamination) on citizens for their own profit. Lies of possible pandemics and company profiteering should be punished. Example: Rumsfled profited off pandemic vaccines and encouraged the government to manufacture and pay for them. .

-Those who think any agency\President\Congressman allowing torture off-shore or otherwise are criminals and should be held accountable. If it is American tax payer funded and controlled they answer to our laws.

-Those who think the "people" have a right to open and free discussion and investigation of 911 and a right to demand all information from government leaders and agencies.

-Those who think it is OK for the people to oppose government agenda and message and not be called unpatriotic or terrorists. That's what a democracy is about.

-Those who believe our military of young people are there for American use and defense not to attack other nations to further an elite agenda for power and wealth around the world. No tax payer dollars should go to "private mercenary or security forces"or be built on foreign soil unless it is for our protection not the other countries. They are not above our laws and military conduct procedures and rules.

-Those who feel we need a National Guard for emergencies and disasters here at home not to be sent to die alone for corporations (or other countries agenda) in foreign lands.

-Those who would protect our borders from illegals, terrorists, and criminals as by law.

-Those who feel the American people are not "terrorists" to be spied on, placed in work prisons, jobs and reputations destroyed, etc. because they oppose government agenda and policies. It violates the Bill of Rights and is tyranny. We still don't really know who did 911 and are silenced. It might be internal treason by our leaders for an agenda so it is important to know so we can remove them before they do it again.

-Those who feel no state or area should be denied funds in time of crisis or need because they are of the minority party. Our government leaders represent all their constituents because we all pay. Example: NY City denied security funds while Montana got more than needed. Levees in New Orleans denied repair and modernization while Florida and Texas get funds to explore space.

Those who feel no small group of Congressional leaders should stop a bill or legislation from coming to the floor (when the public and majority of members support it). All bills should be properly discussed and approved prior to a vote by the public and the Congress. Ten minute discussions and a up or down vote should be illegal.

-Those who feel no one is above the law even the VP and the President of the United States or his administration and party members. Nor should punishment be extreme or created for their perceived political enemies (such as Martha Stewart, Rep. Traficant, and Mr. Wilson's CIA wife, Arab\Islamic Americans, etc.).

"When the government fears the people, there is liberty. When the people fear the government, there is tyranny!" Thomas Jefferson.

-Those who protect our “common wealth” for America not for International corporate (or political) profit. Privatization and globalization is a failure because the bottom line is profit not service, maintenance, or accountability. Only the people can determine the price, provisions, and sale of their publicly paid for assets and resources. We want them back...Niagara Falls Mohawk, etc.

-Those who feel our democracy has been a success but still has a long road ahead so all Americans can feel free and equal.

-Those who feel every citizen has a right to pick their own representatives/government (as stated in the Constitution) should support the District of Columbia residents the right to vote for President, Senator, and Representative. They pay taxes and are citizens. To avoid corruption, maintain the city appearance and function, the police force, public maintenance, fire departments, parks department, etc. should be under Congressional funding, over sight, and control. The DC district representatives should have a seat on the Congressional over sight boards, etc.

There are less than a handful of Progressives in the Congress and in our media today. A few politicians are running for public office in 2008.

Our government leaders have betrayed us over and over. They have failed our democracy big time by violating their oath of office to protect and defend the Constitution at all cost. How can we trust any leader after the lies and death since the 2000 "selection", 911 Hoax, Patriot Acts, illegal wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and the most recent disaster/genocide on our Gulf Coast by Katrina and broken levees (pollution of the environment and City of New Orleans. It was incompetence and outright criminal action for political and profit gain). There was public outrage yet most our Congress and agency heads turn a blind eye to it all. Our President above any responsibility or accountability.

If they are Progressives...let them show us this is true! America is losing more of her democracy everyday day since the 2000 stolen elections. They seem to hate the American worker and democracy. They were given no "mandate" by voters to many of things they rush into in the silence of night or fast tracking just before they go on "break". I'd say it is treason.

Jaybus, from motor vehicle and driver's license problems, to cable company issues, listening to my mom describe her Medicare problems, lack of coherence to anything run by the govt. -- the US is sliding into a rabbit hole.

I'll be glad to fly back to Europe next week. It's sad to see my country and my fellow citizens suffering under these incompetent fucking boobs!!

9. Buy food
Edited on Thu Nov-22-07 09:04 AM by mac2
Even food is becoming too expensive for many Americans.

Oil prices filter through our economy and make everything more expensive than previously. I read were oil prices are to double in the future. You can clearly see it at the food store.

We are about to retire and can't gauge our costs for the future.

Monopolies are ruining our society once again. It is not free trade or capitalism but price fixing.
