2. We had a president of OSCE
US Congressman Alcee L. Hastings was elected President of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly in July 2004 at the 13th Annual Session in Edinburgh, Scotland, and was re-elected at the 14th Annual Session in Washington, DC.

3. No, ineffective, imho. Elections remain a function of the states. Better to
> pressure state AG to enforce federal/state law re: election fraud and voter disenfranchisement;

> pressure state political parties to do the same;

> pressure county/state officials to make access to the poll as easy as possible, and have verifiable election results;

> take an active role in local voter registration drives - door-to-door, shopping malls, whatever venue is comfortable for you;

> do it again;

> make the federal election a national holiday.

:hi:

5. I hate to say I voted for Civil War!
I would trust the UN, maybe, if it were democratic in and of itself. They're not.

6. I don't think the UN has any power over tyrannies that would arise in nations like China and the US.
They can skirt the law and get away with it because of economic/financial reasons. After all, say elections in the US were stolen. What will the UN do if the US government ignores their demands for an investigation? Levy economic sanctions?

7. You're right. China, the US and some other countries have
veto power at the UN. However, what about all the countries that don't have veto power? Might it not be both feasible and worthwhile for the UN to promote democracy in those countries?

Also, isn't it possible that, for PR reasons, the veto power might not be used and that monitoring alone without enforcement power could provide some benefits?

Independent organizations obtain data to estimate how many people are watching Jerry Springer. Is that more important than taking similar precautions to prevent elections from being rigged?

8. I'd rather just see Jimmy Carter go around supervising elections
He's done it quite a bit, and has become something of a world citizen. Plus, he's trusted and respected outside of America, whatever the Republican twits here say about him.

9. I'm not sure, but
doesn't President Carter do that under the auspices of the U.N.?

In any event, I desperately wish someone was monitoring our elections.
