A thought on Jim Webb working on Thanksgiving
Edited on Thu Nov-22-07 01:43 PM by lame54
A fellow DU'er placed a post asking for applause for Jim Webb because he appeared on the senate floor to block any chance of Bush making a recess appointment.

Most of the replys have been of a positive nature.
My reply was more cynical and, so far, has been met very negatively.

Yesterday another DU'er placed a post complaining about having to work on Thanksgiving.

He received many negative replys, calling him a whiner, telling him to "simply" go out and get different job, etc.

My question is how come a guy who shows up to work a year late and, puts in a whole 22 seconds, leaving him plenty of time to get back home to spend Thanksgiving with his family, deserves applause while another guy who has to put in a full days work gets shit on for daring to complain about having to miss the same holiday?

2. Targets
As somebody who often works through holidays, has lengthy vacation-blackout periods, etc., I sympathized with lame54's post. I try to be extra considerate and appreciative to other service workers, and really, do everything I can so I don't have to go out and consume on whatever holiday.

But Chaska's post . . . really setting oneself up as a target, especially on our flame-heavy forum. I am as righteously angered by the fact that one part of my job stabs away much of the good feelings of the holiday by forcing me to observe and feed an orgy of gluttony and excess, while another part twists that knife by regimenting my work schedule so that it's the opposite of everybody else's. Cynical or otherwise, my smile remains the same.

And I always tell myself that I'm not as miserable as I could be.

3. Regarding Jim Webb spending 22 seconds to block
Edited on Thu Nov-22-07 02:08 PM by vmaus
recess appointments... thanks, but we are not impressed. The Democratic party is MIA... DINOs eat cake while at least 35 million Americans go hungry... All we have to show for a Democratic majority is shame.

4. Oh yeah, and Jim Webb
hitting the floor is just a watchdog-political maneuver (granted, one that is to our progressive benefit) made by a political service worker. I applaud Jim and chaska for their efforts just as I do anybody else working today. Repug sneakiness or consumer thoughtlessness are born from an excess of bile.

Don't let Repug bitterness become your bitterness. For them, that turkey's going to taste like ashes in their mouth.

Happy Thanksgiving to one and all.
