I believe the use of tasers should be discontinued IMMEDIATELY because
it just seems obvious to me that they (even when used correctly) are unpredictable as to their results. What I'm referring to is the fact that some people have undetected weaknesses or abnormalities in their hearts etc., which can be triggered by the electric shocks into these deadly results. We in Canada had the Vancouver Airport incident recently and just today another fatality in Nova Scotia when a man was tasered by the police and died.
Why can't they design some sort of device similar to what they use to tranquilize and bring down wild animals they want to subdue? This seems like a reasonable and viable solution. Anyone agree?

1. I think that one of the biggest problems is that they are being used when they shouldn't...
be. The idea of Tasers are a last resort to shooting a suspect, but police seem to be using this as an almost first resort. They obviously are dangerous, (all be it) less so than being shot with a gun in most cases. There needs to be clarification by the heads of these police departments as to when they should be used.

2. I still say that they will cause death at times even when used under the
correct circumstances. Huge animals are rendered helpless by tranquilizer guns. Again I say, why not use something similar to that on humans.

3. because
a) a tranquilizer gun will not immediately subdue someone and

b) you'll probably have just as many unintended deaths - maybe more.

Nothing is 100% safe. Choke holds and pressure holds can kill, too.

without any trouble. I have never heard of one of them being killed.

6. As a college student, I helped the professors who developed the first tranquilizer gun. They killed
many animals accidentally while trying to find the right drug and amount.

Today accidental deaths still occur.

31. No, that came along much later but I was a very lucky college sophomore doing a part time job at
minimum wage. I had no idea at the time about the tranquilizer gun project. One of my jobs was measuring the drug dose for syringes.

Again, I knew nothing about the technical aspects of the research, I was just a lab assistant doing a simple job requiring little training.

Sometimes being at the right time at the right place can lead to warm memories.

8. It's not immediate, is it?
The animal usually stumbles around for awhile. Sometimes they show no effect at all.

And you think cops can adequately measure the dosage for a particlar person? Any anesthesiologist can tell you that there are risks involved when sedating someone.

34. Do you believe
that sometimes law enforcement has to subdue people, and do so quickly?

Because if your answer is "no", then there's no point in having this conversation. If your answer is "yes", then we can try to discuss the details. But your sarcastic one-liners don't do anything to advance the discussion.

10. When 82 year olds with Alzheimers, are being tasered
I think it is time to ban the use of them until, there are proper procedures in place.
Oh BTW this story is 2 years old.

14. I think I said proper procedures
I did not say ban them outright. Did you even read the article? And if the cops can't handle an 82 year old who acted in confusion, should they be in uniform? But then again you probably cheered the Atlanta cops that killed a 92 year old woman.

why must people jump to the most ridiculous conclusions when asked a simple question?

I have never defended the use of the taser in these cases. But I recognize that law enforcement often DOES need to subdue a person, and no method is without risk.

And you DID say "ban the use of them".

Do you accept the premise that sometimes people DO need to be subdued, and subdued as quickly as possible?

30. The local police tasered an elderly man for urinating in the
park a couple years ago. The old guy had to go so rather than piss his pants he goes behind a bush in the park and this trigger happy cop tasers him. He claimed the old guy was combative, give me a break if the cop can't handle an 80 year old he shouldn't be on the job.

with the kooks they allow to carry and use them and the enablers that keep they crazy bastards on the job.

12. You would only whack someone on the head as a last resort.
I'm okay with Tasers being used instead of guns, but they're using them when the use of ANY other weapon wouldn't have been justified.

13. Repeating an earlier post of mine on this today:
I guess I'd like to know why they don't have a "low" option

These things are going to apply several tens of kilovolts to the "suspect" regardless of whether they are a 100 lb. pregnant motorist or a meth-crazed 300 pounder. It would be utterly trivial (and yes, I am qualified to speak here) to build these with a variable or two-stage output. And please don't tell me "an officer can't be distracted messing with a switch setting when his/her life may be in danger" - this needs to be no more complicated than a garden hose sprayer; the more you pull in the trigger, the higher the volume.

Of course, that still doesn't address whether these are being seen by some cops as an easy way to get away with punishment just for the sake of it.

28. Regardless of whether size is the deciding factor
You could still build these with a "get suspect's attention" setting to let them know it's probably a good idea to go along with the officer's requests, and a "This one is gonna hurt" setting for the difficult cases. Again, it would be completely trivial to redesign these for such a capability.

50 kV+ is simply too much for the intended purpose of these things.

16. The way tazers are used they should either be banned altogether or tightly regulated
Edited on Thu Nov-22-07 07:46 PM by killbotfactory
Non-lethal to many cops means they will use them whenever they feel like it, not when it's appropriate. I've also seen way too many videos of cops using them to incapacitate someone, quickly give them an order while they are stunned, and then shock them again or worse when the person is unable to anything other than scream. On the other had, if the person IS able to move after being tazed, they then claim that the suspect is on drugs or has superhuman lethal strength because they weren't completely incapacitated by the shocks, and that opens up the possibility of lethal force.

17.  All these weapons or defence /control devices should be stopped
For gods sake , are people crazy ? If someone told me when I was a kid in the 50's there would be police with assult weapons and tasers and all this other gear I would not have believed it .

All these new jobs being advertized for security and brainless idiots as security guards who probably watched cops as the favorite show .

It's complete madness and insanity and people except this and debate this as if there is no other way .

If security is such an issue then perhaps the root cause of crime should be looked into not ways to kill and assult people , maybe people need jobs that pay a fair wage and the entire airport security issue since it is a scam of the highest order should be revamped instead of it now being a test ground to see just how much people will allow in the way of forced needless control .

This stuff looks like a police state Orwell tale and it will never stop the rate this crap continues .
