The Eagle Is Wounded
This is a song I recently wrote:
======================

THE EAGLE IS WOUNDED

The young men are dying -
The mothers are crying-
Their children are fighting -
On the far distant shores.

The flags they are flying-
The people they are buying-
With the dollars from -
The rich man’s wars.

On the TV news -
It’s the same old story-
The good guys - the bad guys-
It’s all black and white.

Extradition and rendition -
We'll all be in prison -
Drowning with fear -
In the middle of the night.

The country is calling -
It’s honor is falling -
The eagle is wounded -
A long way from home.

The truth is forsaken-
There’s money to be taken-
Because in the end -
You’ll be standing alone.

The young men are dying -
The mothers are crying-
Their children are fighting -
On the far distant shores.

G -C - D- G

1. I gotcha... Driving AcrosAmerica...
The gentle winds of change, I hear the sound
It stirs the quiet desert sand
I ride the rails of joy and sorrow down
Into the canyons of this Land

Thru my windshield I see Fear and Faith
Rich and Poor from town to town
One owns a Bible and one owns a safe
But neither walk on common ground

Tonight I'm driving across America
Mister, can I talk to you?
Tonight I'm driving across America
Oh, say, can't you see what I've been through?

I see a Black Man with his hands held high
I see a fatherless son
I see a policeman who wonders why
He keeps his tears locked in his gun

And I see a White Man with his eyes blood red
'cause he's been told what he should feel
And I see too many women cut to shreds
And taking half their lives to heal

Tonight I'm driving across America
Mister, can I talk to you?
Tonight I'm driving across America
Oh, say, can you see what I see, too?

We rise and fall from Sea to Shining Sea
Balancing Freedom and Change
Waiting for a Purple Mountain Majesty
To be our Saviour when it rains

Tonight I'm driving across America
Mister, can I talk to you?
Tonight I'm driving across America
Oh, say, can you see what I see through?

2. Excellent Tom!
I love to write songs while I am driving. Especially on those straight Missouri highways with the warm morning sun... :-)

5. So you are really
Mark Germino
Genre: Rock
Active: '90s
Instruments: Vocals, Guitar
Biography
Originally a poet, Mark Germino eventually became a folk-rock artist as a means of furthering his literary aspirations. Born in North Carolina, he moved to Nashville in 1974; although he never intended to become a musician, he bought a guitar a few months later after reasoning that performing songs would be easier than reciting poetry. A trucker by day, Germino began performing in area clubs at night and signed a music publishing deal in 1981. After working as a songwriter for much of the decade, in the late '80s and early '90s Germino issued three major-label albums in a vein of heartland rock much like the work of Steve Earle, including 1990's Radartown (recorded with a backing band called the Sluggers) and London Moon and Barnyard Remedies. In 1995, he issued the folkier Rank & File. ~ Jason Ankeny, All Music Guide

7. That's pretty good
you should set that to music, if you haven't already. It has the makings of a good folk song.

4. Here's one that needs music
Red , White & Blue.. Memoriam for a young soldier

Red is the dirt where the life-force pooled
White Hot is the fury in the hearts of the soldier's pals
Blue is the color of the family's forever souls

Dead are the dreams for that once-child into whose eyes a new mother gazed.. all those years ago
Light is the body bag with all that remains, of the remains
Due is the debt of all who care for the families with empty words

Red tee shirt still folded in a drawer at home.. taken out, caressed, and refolded.. again and again
White athletic shoes lined up in a closet, waiting to be worn again, but now a just a home for spiders
Blue windbreaker hung carelessly on a desk chair..never to be laundered. His scent is still there

Read about him in the paper..a few lines summing up a brave wasted life
White & Black photo of a young dead face smiles at us from the grave
New Blue ribbon , purple ribbon, red ribbon, yellow ribbon..lined up.. all in a tidy box

Said he wanted to serve and needed to, for college
White Knight syndrome often inhabits a young soul
True was his love of country, friend and family

Red wagons with laughing children he never had, never pulled by him
Blue ribbons his children would have won in sports, unseen by him
White wedding dress his bride never wore for him

Hang a flag
Watch a parade
Buy a mattress
Stick on another magnet ribbon

He's gone, but out there are Mothers and Fathers harvesting the next crop of Sons of the Red White & Blue
