29. You get bonus points for sustainability.
Anything homegrown or homemade is the antithesis of the Christmas shopping glutton-fest. Cooperation and sharing is what this season should be about. Give your homebrew buddy a big hug! :D

I'm one of those people who would rather spend a little more for an item rather than fight the crowds over items on sale. I have no intention of setting foot in a store today, and at this point, no plans to shop at all this weekend either.

We woke up to plastic-smelling smoke this a.m. It was choking us, and the house was cold.

The main board that runs the furnace had burned out. There was a melted plastic spot on it. They replaced it with a part that does not have any plastic.

On edit: I would think buying something from only LOCAL merchants might not count, if I WERE to buy something, which in other years if I were forced to buy something, is what I did.

Got it from a guy I know

He showed up today at the house

88. I have bought nothing today
And do not plan to buy anything today.

In fact, I haven't even left my house... cat woke me up at 7:30, I pet her, as required, but ended up awake enough to get up. Took my medicine, ate breakfast (cherry pie and deviled eggs make a great breakfast), then I went back to be around 9 and slept until noon. Got up, talked to my brother for an hour, called and left a message for my sister, took the dog out, brought the trash cans in and now, I'm eating lunch.

In fact, I'm thinking about taking a few things BACK to the store, just to screw up the "Black Friday" sales. It's a lie... it's all a lie. Every year, they claim the economy is getting better based on the crap people buy today. And, every year, the economy still sucks and there are millions of people who can't even afford to buy food today, much less get that fantastic deal on that laptop that they can't use anyway.

My fridge died this morning. :( It's old, and has been teetering on the edge for a while. So I just came back from the appliance store (wasn't crowded at all there), and they're going to deliver my new fridge tomorrow.

So it really wasn't holiday shopping. I would've had to buy this any day of the year that it happened. And I'm replacing my old fridge with an Energy Star compliant new fridge, which will use less electricity. :)

101. Eternal Stew, anyone?
Eternal Stew started out as a savory beef stew my mom made for Christmas last year. She gave me the leftovers, which I have been nibbling on, adding ingredients to, and recooking every 7-10 days since then without ever allowing it to be completely consumed.

Today I added some leftover ribeye steak, and replenished the herbs and spices (they get diluted as you add other stuff). Once the meat is cooked to tenderness I'll add some vegetables and simmer it until they're cooked.

Anyone who comes to visit can eat some or take some away. The rest will be refrigerated until it's time to revive again.

I'm buying gas for cooking, but eating for sustenence is exempt.

It's madness. There is nothing I want badly enough to wade through a sea of crazed humanity in the hopes of scoring some bargain on unnecessary consumer goods. Fuck that. I don't even do malls any more. Online is the way to go. Or ebay. I may go hit the Goodwill this afternoon in search of some terrific bargain. Thrift stores usually remedy my shopping Jonesing. I detest this time of year. From Black Friday through Christmas Eve I avoid unnecessary shopping at all costs. People get nuts this time of year and I prefer to opt out of the madness.

In an effort to get out of the house without waking my family (they're off today), I forgot to brush my teeth. I thought as I was driving, "I'll just brush them at work!" (I have a toothbush, toothpaste, and floss in my desk), but then I remembered I didn't have toothpaste! I had run out! So I pulled into a convenience store and bought a tube. Perhaps consideration for my fellow workers will outweigh any transgressions I might have made at the market today? :(

142. Non-consumer here
Because consumption is so central to many economies, and even to the current forms of globalization, its effects therefore are also seen around the world. How we consume, and for what purposes drives how we extract resources, create products and produce pollution and waste. Issues relating to consumption hence also affect environmental degradation, poverty, hunger, and even the rise in obesity that is nearing levels similar to the “official” global poverty levels. Political and economic systems that are currently promoted and pushed around the world in part to increase consumption also lead to immense poverty and exploitation. Much of the world cannot and do not consume at the levels that the wealthier in the world do. In fact, the inequality structured within the system is such that as Richard Robbins says, “some one has to pay” for the way the wealthier in the world consume.

143. So far, we have bought two local papers and ate at one of our favorite buffets
We bought the local papers because of the KU-MU football game tomorrow and we read them over at one of our favorite locally-owned buffets. So, we've made three purchases from local businesses. We're back home and not planning to go out for the rest of the day or buy anything else. I just can't stand the consumerism at this time of year and tend to stay home. I'm also enough of a miser that I wait until after the holidays to take my nieces and nephews out to buy presents for them. We usually get more for less and there are no duplicate presents. The kids love it because they get to pick out what they want (within reason) and we get to spend time with them.

157. A shopping dilemma
Edited on Fri Nov-23-07 02:51 PM by Jim Lane
My mother needs some ibuprofen, so I said I'd go to the drugstore for her.

I can walk to a Rite-Aid or a Walgreen's. To get to a drugstore that's not part of a big chain, I'd have to burn fossil fuels.

Weighing the pros and cons, including my need for exercise, I'm going to walk to the Walgreen's. If you think I should instead patronize a small, locally owned business, take it up with Al Gore.

On edit: Oh, and when I say "ibuprofen", I don't mean Advil, I mean the chemically identical house brand, which is much cheaper. At a small store I might have to fork over the extra money for Advil.

174. I sold something - does that count?
I've been selling some of the books I accumulated on Amazon, and this morning some kind soul bought one of those "What was I thinking when I bought this?" volumes that's been sitting around taking up space for many years. Turns out it was out of print and rare, and I priced my copy low for quick sale, so I see it as a win-win for me and the buyer. Of course Amazon takes their cut, but I'm a stockholder.

Tomorrow I may need to buy a few last minute items for my Thanksgiving dinner so I'll hit the farmer's market (Mr. Retrograde and I do our big dinner on Saturdays - it was much easier when we were both working, plus it's our anniversary). Today I'm cleaning and making pies.

As for shopping, I may poke my head in some stores the next time I'm in San Francisco, but since I take the train there that limits what I can buy, even if I want to. And after cleaning my mother's house I'm in a serious de-cluttering mood right now.

I ventured out on Wednesday to get a last-minute Thanksgiving turkey and a few other things and it was a nightmare! The grocery store was packed, even though it's a "super center..." Somebody hit me in the ass with a shopping cart, I had to avoid a kid rolling on the floor and some woman only left me a few sprigs of flat leaf parsley, which was on my list. A lot more cars were pouring in as I tried pulling out. Never again! I'd rather have a frozen dinner! Anybody who ventures out into even worse traffic today has got to be certifiable!

Conflict for consumer society(economy) or is it any society. If they(we) don't buy we don't work and don't eat. economy tanks. Do we need all those folks running around walmart and target to find cheap stuff? What the hell is Christmas anyway. HDTV. Plasma screens. ipod nano touch. the latest handbag. I must admit it is fun to shop. Retail therapy. Would we rather wooden shoes, hard labor on the farm, horse and buggy. hunger. Do we have to balance that against crazed kids wanting the next video game or sneaker or gold chain or mp3player or cellphone. Major financial institution losing billions from greed by making cheap loans on ugly overpriced and poorly made balloon houses

I love living simply. I am tired of being broke but have dreams of selling my art and making more and ecking out freedom from shame of not being able to pay.

I love my roses and dahlias and goldenrod and birds and other wild creatures that I feed. My beloved friends. I brought lots of chocolate to Thanksgiving dinner and left it with the host who will enjoy it over the next few weeks while watching comedy shows as she is trying to move away from despair and negativity.

What a life. What a gas.

On the tube today, a talking corporate head woman was explaining that a 'new study shows that when consumers shop more often they actually spend less and ultimately save money.' So in order to save money, it is necessary to go to the store more often! This is a load of propagana bunk designed to bamboozle more buyers into the stores! I spend money every time I go into a store, but NONE if I don't. They must be feeling vulnerable this year. This consumer is shopping and spending very little.

Thank you adbusters!

273. I don't shop on the day after TG. I like to go the day after Christmas.
TG is a busy weekend for me even if I eat at someone else's home. Right now I'm cooking my own turkey so Mr. H and I can have all the great stuff that comes along after the first dinner: cold sandwiches with lettuce and mayo, pot pies, turkey tetrazzini, and finally, gloriously, frame soup. I freeze bags full of broth for later use. If I can't get to the broth or soup in the next few days I'll just bag the bones and freeze them for when I do have time.

The crowds and traffic are nothing I want to deal with on Black Friday -- I'll finish up my gifts in the next few weeks. I already have most of it done thanks to Costco. I also need to sit down with the annual letters from charities like the Food Bank and Heifer International and make sure those checks go out too.

When my kids were little I used to buy certain toys the day after Christmas and store them for their birthdays and the next Christmas. You can do that with little kids because you know that certain stages in their interests will be coming along. When they start wanting electronics it becomes harder -- then you have to decide what to say yes or no to, because you can't simply store it for a year.

The prices on that day are fabulous because the stores want to simply dump whatever they haven't sold. My sis and her husband wanted to have a set of china with holly leaves and the like on it, so they got it over several years at steep after-Christmas discounts.

Hekate

"In sagging wood homes and aged trailers scattered across Washington County, many of Maine’s poorest and oldest shiver too much in the winter, eat far more biscuits and beans than meat and cannot afford the weekly bingo game at the V.F.W. hall."

And they needed the business. It was slow. I did meet a friend for a movie and mentioned how I was bothered by the commercialism of the holidays - people buying clothing made in asian sweatshops and poisoned children's toys, and the pressure to participate for people that can't really afford it. Her reply ... "it doesn't bother me." Hmmm. NONE OF THAT BOTHERS HER. How did I used to date this person? Aaarrrggggh.

313. Not a thing in the world I need, not leaving the house till I have to
which is Monday morning to take the kids to school. I'm staying in my stinky pajamas and nursing my cold till then.

314. It was a wonderful day to grocery shop.
The store was practically empty & the checkers were in a good mood. I hate malls, not just this time of year, but every time of the year. It's been over 6 years since I went to a mall.

315. Christmas is a family holiay
The corporations have failed to sell me on getting into their frenzy of shopping. I am knitting a few things and then the Heifer Project sounds good for others. I will not go to the stores as I do not participate and haven't for many years in this crazy making ritual of consumerism.

Thinking back to what my Great-grandmother did. She knit mittens for each grandchild - 17 of them. of course, that was before malls.

I must find time to measure my grand-daughter's foot for those handknit socks.

317. Didn't plan to buy, but did!
No way was I going to get into the Black Friday crush. My printer broke and I needed a new one asap. I ordered one online from Walmart. Delivery was promised between Nov 28 - Dec 4. I just got a confirmation that for my 9.92 freight charge, it's on a Fedex truck this very moment, out for delivery! Incredible!!!!!!

324. Had to go to the grocery store
The people whose house we went to for Thanksgiving didn't offer us any leftovers to take home. They even kept the remainder of the pie that I baked - I was handed a clean pie plate to take home. :wtf: So instead of the leftovers we had planned to eat, I had to go get some of the ingredients for shepherd's pie. Lesson learned: next time they invite us for Thanksgiving, we're going to turn them down.
