"Arian Enterprises"
Edited on Sat Nov-24-07 04:30 PM by idgiehkt
What would you think if a business named that opened in your town. They fly about 20 American flags. It is a used-car dealership, and they are surrounded by several used-car dealerships that are, presumably, Mexican-owned and that are painted the colors of the flag of Mexico. Is there a way to find out if this is someone's actual surname (which I highly doubt).

Editing, it's not a surname, but as far as the rest I'm editing until I find out more.

1. If it's not somebody's name, I'd tell them to learn how to spell "Aryan" to start with
...unless they are referring to the theological school founded by Arius in the 3rd Century AD.

2. I think
that is the point...Aryan would be too blatant, and they are trying to be subtle.

10. Well, I shall forgive the diss of my state
We're not all racists ya know.

Still, in my West Texas hometown, for the last 30 or so years, there has been an automobile detailing shop named Ken's Kar Kolors. Nobody outright says they're bigots and I have no idea if it's just a clueless play on the owner's first name, still... I have never and will never never patronize them.

Edited on Sat Nov-24-07 03:57 PM by idgiehkt
I didn't mean to diss, I'm in NC so I was self-dissing as well. Some businesses in rural areas fly the confederate flag and I don't patronize those either, they have a very "Deliverance" feel to them.

I'm not sure what to make of the names? one guy is the owner and the other is the 'registered agent' whatever that means. One name is german and the other is eastern though I'm can't say further than that. It would be really cool if it was Iranian, I would laugh.

edit: thanks again for finding this stuff. :)

8. that would be cool
but they are sure littering the landscape with American flags, which makes me suspicious (something you probably wouldn't pick up on unless you were familiar with the tension in an area with a high illegal immigrant population). I wonder if the Arian you are talking about is the same root that the Aryans in India who were supposedly an upperclass had centuries ago, the ones that used the 'swastika' before the Nazi's adopted it.

13. I would need to know more. I have a dear friend who is tone-deaf to that issue....
When we were in college 35 years ago she met and married an Afghan. They've had a number of businesses together over the years, but early on they did some importing with his uncle who lived back in the old country. They called their little store The Aryan Bazaar, which made me cringe. Fortuntely this was when we still all lived in Hawaii, so it didn't hit a lot of hot buttons for the locals.

"Aryan" in that context refers to the culture and language of tribes that invaded India thousands of years ago and established a culture there. Afghanistan also had an Aryan culture 4000 years ago. Hence The Aryan Bazaar.

If you google for India + Aryan and Afghanistan + Aryan you will get a lot of information on this aspect, and as a side discussion the German/Nazi/racialist uses of the term. If you google for solely the term Aryan you will get more info than you ever wanted about skinheads and Nazis.

Like I said, I'd need to know more about the owner and his customers before drawing any conclusions. It might even be his name.

I really hope that this area has not sunk that low. The area that I live in (which is not the same area of the business) is called 'Little Mexico'. I know about the history of the Aryans as well, though it's been a while since I read anything about it. Thanks for the info. :)

Karen's Kozy Kitchen and the like. The woman who told me this kind of used it as a way of knowing which businesses she wanted to avoid.

I've explained it already.

And you know, I'm sure there are plenty of DUers who would consider that a negative. And some who would think it's a positive. And some who just don't care. I can't imagine why you would have a problem with that, it's a 'big tent website' after all.

35. no, there isn't a link
yes, I was afraid it was a racist named business because of the anti-immigrant sentiment around here and because of the businesses surrounding it.

yes, I agree, the ignore feature is cool. Sometimes it is annoying, particularly the 'ignore posts' part; I never use that because those little 'ignored' posts are annoying to me. I do use 'ignore threads' when people get on my nerves occasionally, and I have my PM's turned off so if someone puts me on ignore I have no way of knowing.
