Congressman Says Police Stopped Him Due To Racial Profiling
Congressman says police stopped his vehicle due to racial profiling

CNN
From Ismael Estrada
3:26 p.m. EST, Fri November 23, 2007

CHICAGO, Illinois (CNN) -- U.S. Rep. Danny Davis of Illinois believes he was a victim of racial profiling this week, his spokeswoman said. Rep. Danny Davis thinks he was pulled over because there were "four black men in the car," his spokeswoman said. Two white police officers pulled over the Democratic congressman early Monday morning, according to spokeswoman Tumia Romero.

"He thinks he was pulled over because of his race," Romero said Thursday. "He was not speeding, had a valid driver's license, wasn't swerving, but was pulled over anyway." She said Davis had been working on his radio show until around midnight Sunday. He was driving home three of his guests -- all African-Americans -- when Chicago police officers pulled his vehicle over around 1 a.m. Monday.

The only reason the congressman can see for being stopped was that there were "four black men in the car," Romero said. Davis said he was issued a $75 ticket for "driving left of center." He is scheduled to appear in traffic court December 28. Dana Starks, Chicago police interim superintendent, confirmed that Davis had been issued a citation for a traffic violation.

About Davis' allegations, Starks said, "The Chicago Police Department does not encourage, tolerate or condone racial profiling on any level." Starks added, "We assure the congressman that any allegations of racial profiling will be thoroughly investigated, and the Chicago Police Department remains committed to enforcing the law fairly and without bias."

- Left of center? Is that some kind of crime in Chicago now? I mean he is a black Democrat. Left of center is the natural place for him to be. I suppose the Congressman should count himself lucky that he wasn't tasered back more to the right....

7. If there's two lanes, you must stay right. I remember my Florida written test
which pointed out where the law was different "down there."

9. Driving left of center
is the general purpose excuse given to cover their asses when they don't really have probable cause to stop someone. Its one of those things that is impossible to dispute, cop says you crossed the centerline of the road, you say you didn't his/her word against yours and we all know who gets the benefit of the doubt.

11. This is easy. Subpoena the cruiser video tapes to see if he was, in fact, crossing the line.
If not, then may those officers feel the full fury and might of a violated citizen who happens to hold government office.

12. The usual result is the cop doesn't show ... case dismissed
The profit is in those who simply pay - if you dispute, you'll probably prevail in court. But if you're an out of towner, the authorities know you'll just want to keep your credit history clean.

I can't argue that racial profiling doesn't exist ... of course it does. But at 1 AM ... the cop could have just let 'em go, no matter what the initial suspicion.

10. "Driving left of center"?
Classic case of driving while Black or Mexican.

Since it doesn't say driving on the wrong side of the road or over the center dividing line, this traffic stop has nothing to do with being on the wrong side of the road.

If the congressman was driving down a small narrow residential street with no traffic dividing lines then there's no such thing as driving on the wrong side of the road unless you fail to yield to the right for any on coming traffic.

Clearly a classic case of driving while Black or Mexican.

16. I guess
there are places that still have issues against guys wearing long hair. LOL

I am glad that here in So-Cal at least my long hair (pic below) doesn't draw that sort of attention. :)

Speaking of long hair, coincidently I had taken a few pics for this thread just a few days ago. LOL Here you go.... :P

13. Hopefully the policeman had his camera running
I'm wondering if perhaps the Congressman might have weaved a bit when the cop aggressively tailgated, as they are prone to do.

At any rate, I hope this nonsense is dismissed and the cop is properly dealt with.

14. I think what happened
was these cops saw a car with Blacks during the middle of the night and through their racial profiling attitudes sought to pull them over to conduct a fishing expedition to see what they could possibly find on them to arrest them. But when they learned who they had pulled over they came up with whatever bull shit they could use to cover their asses that it was just a normal routine stop.

17. "driving left of center."
Odd. One of my first driving tests I drove down the center, and almost lost the driving portion of the exam, I think I lost 4 points, one more and I'd have to retake it. This was on a very wide mixed business district street with homes, a single line in the middle, but there was room for two lanes of cars in each direction.

I was told I had to drive on the left, or on the right, but never down the middle.
