Glenn Beck: Poor people are ‘lazy.’
http://thinkprogress.org/2007/11/24/glenn-beck-poor-people-are-lazy/

Glenn Beck: Poor people are ‘lazy.’

In his new book, An Inconvenient Book, right-wing CNN host Glenn Beck argues that “poor people are, in fact, lazy” and supposedly goes “paragraph for paragraph with global-warming alarmist Al Gore, merrily slaughtering the sacred cows of the environmentalist crowd.” From the Publisher’s Weekly description:

In this appraisal of America’s woes, conservative TV and talk-radio host Beck (The Real America) lays lighthearted siege to everything that makes the world worse. {P}olitical correctness is the biggest threat this nation faces today, he declares, as it makes us prey for Islamic fundamentalists, renders taboo the roots of our economic troubles (poor people are, in fact, lazy, he argues) and creates rampant distortion in the media. Beck goes paragraph for paragraph with global-warming alarmist Al Gore, merrily slaughtering the sacred cows of the environmentalist crowd. Not sated by the hide of the former vice president, he goes after everything and everyone from poverty to perverts, offering solutions to these and other problems (e.g., the key to success in the capitalist system is to believe in it).

2. This has got to be a right wing strawman.
Poor people are lazy.

Yeah, that's a strawman all right. Oh wait, Beck will actually defend such an idiotic position despite the fact that there are millions of people who work but are still poor. Hell, there are some who work two or three jobs just to barely live.

3. Yeah, unlike those go-getters whose last name is Bush.
Yep, is there any doubt that George or Jeb wouldn't have achieved the high offices they have held if their last names were, say, Shicklgruber? Another in-depth and profound comment from the giant intellect that is Glenn Beck.

5. Glenn Beck can fuck off and die
Edited on Sat Nov-24-07 06:26 PM by Mike03
When he talks about the American poor, he is talking about war Veterans, people who went bankrupt as the result of medical catastrophes, losing a loved one to cancer or a car wreck.

He is just a piece of shit, excuse my French. I usually don't talk this way. I'm just so sick of those who are getting by scapegoating the least able to defend themselves. It is the classic sign of an economy about to crater.

61. He's also talking about...
.... poor people who really are lazy. They DO exist, contrary to popular opinion here.

I have a friend who has SIX boys. The state has paid for all of them. Her mom has collected disability from SS for years for a back injury, so she decided (at age 22) to do the same thing. Claimed a back injury, started collecting disability, and hasn't held a legitimate job since. Didn't stop her from working as a go-go dancer (I guess pole dancing is easy with a bad back?), or getting pregnant six times - it only stops her from having to get a 9-5 job like the rest of the world.

Is she capable of working? Yes.
Is she interested in working? No.

Therefore, you and I get to pay for her and all six of her kids (until she pawns them off on their fathers, so she can get ready for the next one).

She's not a "working poor", she's not a disabled vet, she's not a medical bankruptcy. She's a normal person who realizes that the system will take care of her if she doesn't want to work, so she chooses not to work.

I have a hard time generating much sympathy for such people, and they ARE out there.

63. Haha. Thanks!
For the welcome and the advice. :)

The thing is, she's not a horrible person - she's nice, and she's a lot of fun. She just doesn't want to be burdened down with a job when the government is there with a regular check for her. She learned it from her mom, and her kids will apparently learn it from her.

I can sympathize with people who work their butt off and never get ahead - I was one for a long time. I'm just pointing out there there really are lazy poor people, too. Not ALL poor people are automatically honorable just by virtue of being poor.

64. Do you have six kids?
Do you have any idea how much daycare costs for even one child? Have you ever been in the welfare system?

Here's a simple experiment. Go downtown, wearing whatever you have on right now. Leave your ID and your driver's license at home. Put 50 cents in your pocket. Now - go get a job.

65. Not sure what that has to do with the topic...
There are people who will take a government handout and choose not to work. She's one of them. She's never put a single one of her kids in daycare; they generally get pawned off on a friend or relative while she's out running around trying to create another one. I watched one of her sons for several months for her, until she gave him to the guy she convinced was the father (he wasn't really, but he didn't know that).

She has ID, she has money, she has a car, and (when she wants to) she gets work as a dancer. It has to be cash, though, so she does not jeopardize her disability payments.

"Poor people" like that really are out there, and I get tired of listening to people lump all poor people into the "hardest working" group. Some people are poor because they won't work hard enough not to be. They are probably not the majority, but they do exist.

All I did was provide one personal example of that.

.... and I agree that that is the case - somewhere between "some of the time" and "most of the time."

Not all of the time, though.

Since I've known this particular case for over 15 years, I'm reasonably sure I know the particulars.

To people who can't afford it, who are too busy working 3 jobs to have time to read it.

But they'll buy it and believe it because he will savage some illegal immigrant or a liberal. And they'll cheer.

Sleight of hand. Send me money so I don't have to do real work! Buy my book so CNN will pay me to sit here and incite people and get ratings!

Ack.

Can you do something with Glenn and Zippy the Pinhead? It might be nice if 100 DUers had something to e-mail to Glenn, along with our request that he take a regressive stance on the "Legalize Lonnie Anderson's Hair" movement. It's the type of controversy that Americans want Glenn to take the lead on.

19. Poor people's "laziness" is a reflection of poor leadership.
With apologies to the football movie, "Remember the Titans."

Americans are robust people. But when their leaders are so incompetent, the poor people will just give up. That laziness could also be called lack of inspiration.

And OH BOY, Isn't bush an inspiration? The liar, the president who ignored warnings about 9/11, the president who did nothing about Katrina, the president who called on us to SHOP. How's that for leadership. What's wrong with you poor people? Got Leadership?

25. This isn't anything new, there is an old redneck song 'Welfare Cadilac' from the Nixon era
WELFARE CADILLAC
by
Guy Drake

I've never worked much, In fact
I've been poor all my life
I guess all I really own
Is ten kids and a wife
This house I live in is mine
But it's really a shack
But I've always managed to somehow
drive me a brand new Cadillac.

The back door steps ...
They done fell plumb down
The front screen door is off and
Laying somewhere out there on the ground
The wind just now whooped
Up another piece of that tar
Roofing off the back; I sure hope it don't
skin up that new Cadillac.

The front porch post fell
loose at the bottom
It don't make no sense to fix 'em
'Cause that floor's just too darn rotten
In Winter time we sometimes have some snow
That blows in through the cracks
If it gets too bad we all just pile up
And sleep out there in that new Cadillac.

I know the place ain't much
But I sure don't pay no rent
I get a check the first of every month
From this here Federal Goverment
Every Wednesday I get commodities
Sometimes four or five sacks
Pick 'em up down at the Welfare Office
Driving that new Cadillac.

Some folks say I'm crazy
And I've even been called a fool
But my kids get free books and
All them there free lunches at school
We get peanut butter and cheese
And man, they give us flour by the sack
'Course them Welfare Checks
They meet the payments on this new Cadillac.

Now the way that I see it
These other folk are the fools
They're working and paying taxes
Just to send my young'uns through school
The Salvation Army cuts their hair and
Gives them clothes to wear on their backs
So we can dress up and ride around
And show off this new Cadillac.

But things are still gonna get better yet
At least that's what I understand
They tell me this new President
Has put in a whole new poverty plan
He's gonna send us poor folks money
They say we're gonna get it out here in sacks
In fact, my wife's already shopping around
For her new Cadillac.

45. Oh wow! Beck is echoing Bush!
I remember reading a Salon article about Bushie's economics professor at Harvard Business. He recollected an incident in which he showed the John Steinbeck movie, "Grapes of Wrath", to the class. Bush asked him "Why are you showing that commie movie?" The prof was somewhat taken aback but replied that he wanted to show how the poor were affected by the depression or something to that effect. Bushie retorted that "the poor are poor because they are lazy." This threw the class into an uproar as they all ganged up on Bushie boy. I was very perturbed to learn of his lack of compassion for the unfortunate, and think this is probably the Bush family ideology that was instilled in him. Beck is just a Bush echo-machine. Bet he doesn't even give credit for the source of his "brilliant" argument. (sarcasm)

50. Sometimes he has something of value to say.
That was NOT one of them.

Plenty of skilled, talented people work their butts off and can't even get a job.

I will nto disagree that there are lazy people out there.

But his one dimensional thinking regarding "lazy" is disgusting.

BTW: I know lawyers who think people in his field aren't doing REAL jobs. What does Unkie Glenn think about that potato?

52. Logic dictates, the only thing worse than being politically correct
Edited on Sat Nov-24-07 08:39 PM by Uncle Joe
is being politically incorrect. The fascists lovers such as Beck; who make their living being wrong or incorrect in order to manipulate the people, would be the first to tell you that War is Peace or the terrorists hate us for our freedom. They try to make being "politically incorrect" a virtue in instead of the flaw in common sense or judgment for which it really is. They used the same technique in making liberal a dirty word in the past. The only way they can win is to convince the American People that being stupid, ignorant or incorrect is cool, because they don't have the facts, truth or history supporting their argument, in short, it's Orwellian Speak.

53. Go...
...fuck yourself, drug addict. Poor people who are struggling to make ends meet and have a very limited chance at upward mobility are some of the hardest working people I've seen. You, on the other hand, are a shitstain, douchebag, rhymes-with-male-kunt, asshole motherfucker.

67. I'm not entirely sure whether poor people are lazy or not...
What I would presume is that Beck is suggesting that we should get rid of Welfare because poor people are lazy and want to live off the government and costing the taxpayers money.

So I've got a proposal for Glenn Beck. If we're going to save the taxpayers money, we need to start with the bigger ticket items. He should go to congress and lobby against excessive spending on the Iraq War, the bloated pentagon budget, agriculture subsidies, and corporate welfare.

While he's doing that, I'll do extensive research on whether poor people are actually lazy and come back with a report. We can then do a cost/benefit analysis to determine whether to cut smaller ticket items like Welfare.
