Looked up word phonetic orthography in 8th grade test
and guess what the second set of links in google was the post about Could you pass the 8th grade test in 1895. That quick it got on google.

And the word means a writing system that has the written word along with the spoken word.

1. Did they stop teaching this stuff after the turn of the century, or do I just
not remember it AT ALL from my 8th grade?

2. They never taught it; it's an urban legend
According to Snopes it's somewhat similar to a test for teachers in the late 19th century, but it was a test that, apparently, most of the aspiring teachers failed.

3. They still teach a lot of it
but they don't use the scary big words to describe what they're teaching.

My grandfather had been a teacher of many things over his life, right through the college level. I had access to all sorts of school books from about the 1890s on up at his house.

I've been both grateful and a little wistful that I wasn't required to come up to those standards.

A high school diploma then was the equivalent, or even more so, of a four year college degree now. Our high school students barely come up to what eighth grade graduates did then, and only when they've worked their tails off in advanced classes.
