New York Manhole Covers, Forged Barefoot in India.

NEW DELHI — Eight thousand miles from Manhattan, barefoot, shirtless, whip-thin men rippled with muscle were forging prosaic pieces of the urban jigsaw puzzle: manhole covers.

Seemingly impervious to the heat from the metal, the workers at one of West Bengal’s many foundries relied on strength and bare hands rather than machinery. Safety precautions were barely in evidence; just a few pairs of eye goggles were seen in use on a recent visit. The foundry, Shakti Industries in Haora, produces manhole covers for Con Edison and New York City’s Department of Environmental Protection, as well as for departments in New Orleans and Syracuse.

<and later>

When officials at Con Edison — which buys a quarter of its manhole covers, roughly 2,750 a year, from India — were shown the pictures by the photographer, they said they were surprised.

“We were disturbed by the photos,” said Michael S. Clendenin, director of media relations with Con Edison. “We take worker safety very seriously,” he said.

We're shocked, just shocked, I tell you...

6. I wonder where our military tanks are made, if we can't even make man hole covers.

7. Living in the third world I can vouch for this.
Those men are glad to have work, however poorly they're being paid. It's a complicated, messy global economy we're in, folks.

8. Would you not say those men are barefoot by choice:
Less chance of a slip-up that way? (And shirtless for obvious reasons).

10. Welcome to DU, Shanti Mama!
:hi:

I'm sure those in the picture are happy for work, but why are they barefooted? Given the molten metal and the weight of each cover, shouldn't they be wearing steel-toed workboots?

12. Third world people often do not wear shoes..
Edited on Mon Nov-26-07 09:21 AM by SoCalDem
I was always amazed when we lived abroad, how many people went barefoot. But then, decades of going barefoot had turned the soles of their feet into pretty hardened "leather"...and in tropical climates, leather mildews:(

21. They'd cost more than we could afford, if we made them here.
Each worker would have to have a salary high enough to pay for our lavish lifestyles. And I didn't say wealthy. Lavish. As in automobiles, large houses (or any house), ebay purchases, special foods shipped from all over the globe.

Plus, each worker would have to have osha approved boots, hats, face protection, a building with special ventilation systems and alarms, and on and on and on. Oh yeah, and the cost of the real estate the factory sits on. And that's just off the top of my silly head.

24. by Union labor too,
think about it. You'd have to be either starving or dumbass stupid to work with boiling hot METAL without safety equipment. Don't get me wrong, the guys doing this over there are unaware that safety on the job is something we expect over here. If the get hurt, do you think they get workerscomp? hell no, they get gone. That's what the mega capitalists want, everyone to just do their job, shut their mouths, and not bother the bottom line if they die or get hurt due to negligent management.

16. What do they Pay these poor bastards?!
plus I know that they BEAT the folks that make the shoes with their own product, called being, "Nike-ied"... Makes me wonder what they do to the screwups in this factory, beat them with Manhole Covers?

That would ruin your whole day :)

Like someone said here, Welcome to the Global Economy ... It ain't that much of a reach for these guys to be filling those holes with the metal makings of a Ford Ranger.. And people wonder why the car workers here aren't getting that 15 bucks an hour anymore.. So much for Unions, eh?

Who'd have thought that in the Future they'd be replacing ROBOTS with Human SLAVES?

18. How To Rebuild Domestic MFG....
Come on guys...(women are excluded, you simply will not be allowed to work except in textile mills...)

Take those protective smocks, helmets, pants and shirts off, wear a sarong, pull the steel toe safety shoes off, forget about lighting or ventilation, just a simple dirt floor with corrugated steel walls.

Time to get back to what made America great in the late 1800's...unsafe working conditions, long hours for low pay and no benefits...

THis is where we are headed as the government becomes more and more hostile to labor.
