Sen. Trent Lott To Resign By Year's End
Lott Is Sixth Senate Republican To Announce Retirement

JACKSON, Miss. -- Mississippi Sen. Trent Lott says he'll retire from the Senate by the end of the year.

The Senate's No. 2 Republican said it's not his health, and that he feels fine. He says it's just time for him and his wife "to do something else."

Lott said he leaves with "no anger, no malice." As for his 16 years in the House and 19 in the Senate, he described his time on Capitol Hill as "a wild ride -- and one that I'm proud of."

Lott said President George W. Bush "was very kind in his remarks" after Lott notified him of his resignation. Mississippi's Republican governor will name someone to temporarily replace Lott.

Lott's colleagues elected him as the Senate's Republican whip last year, a redemption for the senator after his ouster five years ago as the party's Senate leader over remarks he made at retiring Senator Strom Thurmond's 100th birthday party in 2002. Lott had saluted the South Carolina senator with comments later interpreted as support for southern segregationist policies.

After the 2006 elections, when Democrats recaptured the Senate, Lott was put in charge of lining up and counting votes as whip, the No. 2 job behind minority leader Mitch McConnell.

Lott became the sixth Senate Republican this year to announce retirement.

1. Yeah, Trent. That anger and malice is all being felt by your constituents and
the rest of the American people.

That is, the ones who aren't Kool-Aid addicts.

Let the door hit you in the ass on the way out, OK? (I would call him a douche bag, but that's an insult to douche bags.)

Lott has given speeches to such groups and is greatly admired by them.

My guess is that they're looking for a spokeperson like Lott for their "cause." After all, wouldn't such organizations want a major political figure and a Strom Thurmond admirer to advance their agenda?

Well, it's either that, or Larry Flint has some interesting info or photos.
