Sean Taylor Dies in Miami

By Amy Shipley and Jason La Canfora
Washington Post Staff Writers
Tuesday, November 27, 2007; 6:06 AM

MIAMI, Nov. 27 -- Washington Redskins safety Sean Taylor has died from the gunshot wound he suffered early Monday when he was shot in his Miami home.

"He did not make it through the night," said Taylor's attorney, Richard Sharpstein, who called the incident "a ridiculous unnecessary tragedy."

Taylor died in the Miami hospital where he was taken after being shot once in the leg early Monday morning. The bullet severed his femoral artery. Police are investigating the shooting as a possible home invasion.

Taylor's death comes after what had been interpreted as optimistic signs following hours of surgery.

Taylor had squeezed a doctor's hand and made facial expressions early Monday evening, Redskins officials and a family friend said, providing some hope after he emerged from seven hours of surgery at Jackson Memorial Hospital. He had been "unresponsive and unconscious" until that point and doctors had feared possible brain injury or death, according to Taylor's attorney, Richard Sharpstein.

Taylor, 24, confronted one or more intruders early Monday morning at the bedroom door of the house he shares with his fiancee and 18-month-old daughter, and was shot in the upper thigh near the femoral artery, Sharpstein said. The fiancee and child were uninjured, but Taylor lost significant amounts of blood and received a number of transfusions, according to Sharpstein and a source at the hospital.

WASHINGTON, Nov 27 (Reuters) -

The National Football League's Sean Taylor, a star defensive player for the Washington Redskins,
died on Tuesday after being shot at his home near Miami, local television stations in Washington
reported.

Taylor, 24, who was the Redskins first pick in the 2004 draft, was shot in the leg, severing his
femoral artery, during an apparent home robbery on Monday.

He was airlifted to Miami's Jackson Memorial Hospital for treatment but died from his wound after
heavy blood loss, local affiliates of CBS News and ABC News said. The Miami Herald reported that
Taylor and other occupants of the house heard intruders at the rear door
and Taylor was shot in the leg.

Police said they were called at 1:45 a.m. by a woman who said Taylor had been shot.

"We've yet to determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting," said Miami-Dade Police spokeswoman Kathy Webb.

3. Defending his home.
I don't understand about dying from a leg wound, though. I get that a shot artery is bad, but it doesn't seem reasonable that it's this bad. Someone who understands anatomy explain? Please?

7. the femoral artery is a BIGGIE and you can indeed bleed out & die from having it cut
Edited on Tue Nov-27-07 06:45 AM by SoCalDem
apparently his was severed.. He was probably verging on brain dead by the time he got to the hospital.. poor guy..

I had an abruption in my 7th month of pregnancy (the uterine artery) and by the time I got to the hospital and into surgery, they pumped 7 pints of blood into me.. and that artery's smaller than the femoral

the aorta splits into two femoral arteries that go down each leg

10. Thanks!
So even if the ambulance broke all records getting there, it was pretty much over?

Sorry to hear about the abruption, I hope ...I can't make myself ask. But you can figure it, I think.

13. Yes. we both survived it.. barely.. I had a second abruption at 8 months
with my third (and last baby).. My OBGYN, said "Please, let's not do this again". I agreed..

my middle pregnancy was textbook..(except for the scheduled section)

I had fantastically easy pregnancies, until the 3rd trimester, then 2 out of 3 were trainwrecks :)

He wasn't brain dead when he arrived at the hospital nor while he was there.

16. Unfortunately, that report is false
He squeezed the doctor's hand and made some facial gestures, but he never really regained consciousness. They said when they reported that he had squeezed the doctors hand that it was a good sign, but they really wouldn't know anything until he woke up and recognized people.

22. After surgery, it was thought he squeezed a hand conveying
that he was semi-conscious. In reality, this may have been more reflexive movement. He did not return to consciousness nor speak after surgery and the sheer blood loss with lack of oxygen to the brain meant he might well have had brain damage, had he survived.

14. I'm so glad that you made it through
The danger isn't just the lack of blood to the brain, but the other vital organs as well. Patients can have multple organ failure (renal, hepatic, cardiac) making it very difficult for recovery.

You are truly a gem, I'm so glad that we have you. I wish that the outcome had been better for this young man. :(

My placenta was 1/3 detached in the first one..and 1/4 on the last one..

I grew the babies ok, not so much on the placenta :eyes:

The lucky thing was that with the first one, my husband was in the bedroom packing to go on a week long business trip and he heard the noise of the gushing.. said it sounded like a watermelon hitting concrete.. I thought my water had broken, but it was blood.. If it had happened the next day, I'm pretty sure I would have bled to death..

He loaded me in the car and raced me to the hospital..no 911 back then.. and the next day he and my best friend used 2 rolls of paper towels to sop up the blood that ran through the car seat and puddled on the floor behind the seat..

I was unconscious and had no blood pressure by the time we got to the hospital..so we were indeed very lucky :)

I think it's fairly much over at that point if you don't get IMMEDIATE attention.

21. Remember arteries are under great pressure, bringing blood
pumped directly FROM the heart into the extremities and throughout the body. The Femoral arty is the main and largest on in the leg. Contrast this to the major VEINS that pick up the pooled blood from the extremities and bring it back to the heart. They are not under the same pressure. While one could lose a lot of blood from cutting a major vein, it pools more slowly as opposed to literally gushing out-- as would the artery. This would give one a chance to stem the blood loss with direct pressure (on a vein) but, conversely the same pressure would beless effective on a small artery, and nearly impossible for one of the large arteries, e.g., femoral, carotid in the neck, etc.

6. Very sad
From what I've heard, it is almost impossible to survive if one is wounded near or at the femoral artery. I had read earlier in the day that he had come through surgery and was alert and speaking. I was glad to hear this. I am sorry he did not survive.

15. He was never alert and speaking after the surgery
This was the extent of his waking:

The bullet severed Taylor's femoral artery, causing massive blood loss. He underwent seven hours of surgery, and there were some initially optimistic signs after he emerged from the operation early Monday evening. Described at first as "unresponsive and unconscious," Taylor had squeezed a doctor's hand and made facial expressions, Redskins officials and a family friend said, providing some hope.

He never really regained consciousness. So sad, he had made an effort to turn his life around since the birth of his daughter.
