Want to Play 'Santa?' ID Required
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The U.S. Postal Service is tightening up security to keep your children safe this holiday season, NBC 4’s Erin Tate reported.
To keep sex offenders and other nondesirables from posing as the Jolly Ol‘ Elf, the Postal Service is requiring Operation Santa helpers provide a photo ID and sign a waiver releasing the Postal Service from liability before they can write to children or grant Yuletide wishes.
A handful of letter carriers and postal clerks help Santa respond to about 1,000 letters from children in the central Ohio area, and sometimes they ask spouses or local school children to help, Tate said. Wish-granting charities, businesses and schools also must fill out forms.
The local Postal Workers Union said employee volunteers will not have to comply with the new security measures.
