As a non-American, I am encouraged by the fact that so many people in your country do seem to care, from everyday folks to world-famous writers and scholars (even though the mainstream media may be more distracted by celebrity crime and gossip).

3. I'm lucky -- I'm at work, and this computer doesn't support video
Was it really dreadful?

Speaking of vaudeville, it sounds like the entire GOP is desperately trying to break into showbiz ... they probably realize that they'll need new careers pretty soon. Even Dubya was going around making ghastly attempts at humor (thinking of trying to be a scab, with the WGA strike on?): "I also thank everybody who voted online to choose the names for our guests of honor. And I'm pleased to announce the winning names. They are May and Flower. They're certainly better than the names the Vice President suggested, which was Lunch and Dinner."

I have promised my friends who work as professional entertainers that I will stop referring to this administration as "a bunch of clowns", because real clowns mean well (and they have intensive training that they work hard at).

Oh well -- one day, maybe Democrats will be rich, and Republicans will be funny?

4. Me, too. It's soooo staged, a total act. Nothing authentic or genuine.
Of course, the "political discourse" is the least of what I am ashamed, as an American.

And Stephen Colbert had gotten himself into a primary.
